Hello all
I have just (well, not really "just", but anyway) stumbled upon a new profile where I found out that this user has copied ALL of my keywords straight from my page and pasted them onto his own profile. When I say "all of them", I mean all the keywords, in the same order which they appear in my profile. Plain copy&paste stuff.
Actually, this user copied not only mines, but also these of few other peers, since this profile boasts something like 1.555 keywords (yes, I have counted them with MS Word).
I have already contacted the staff and got a reply saying that "many profiles will share certain keywords since these represent the fields users work in or the services they offer. So, having a shared set of keywords is allowed since there is no way to avoid different sets if the profiles' owners involved offer the same services and work in the same fields".
Well, this is the strangest definition of "shared" I've ever heard.
I am not happy at all with this to say the least, but maybe it's just me. What do you think?
Gianni

No, it's not just you, at least there's 2 of us By the way, isn't it counterproductive? 1555 keywords are way too many IMHO, do they claim they are specialised in absolutely everything?

Of course it is not nice...
If it is any consolation, such practice is counterproductive - most search engines have been tuned to avoid "catch all" keyword pages. Now the focus is on precise matching of search criteria - therefore if you have as keywords just "musical instruments", your page will rank much higher in related searches than a page with those two words and hundreds of other keywords.

Hi Gianni
How about contacting privately the plagiarist...erhm... I mean, "the person who used the same keywords" and ask for an explanation? Just like that, to see if he/she's got an answer or a reason.
Did he/she maybe think that nobody would have found out about this? Did he/she do it out of mere laziness or because he/she was out of words and didn't know how to plump up his/her profile?
Yes ok, I can understand that profiles may sometimes appear similar (after all ProZ.com lists I don't know how many thousands between users and members), but keyword lists that are 100% similar in 2 or more profiles is blatantly a copycat work!.
One might argue "What's wrong with that? You don't own the copyright of your list". Yes, I don't own the copyright of my keyword list, I just think it's a matter of being fair.
That's my 2 cents....

1500? It makes me feel better because I have just 222 words.
Gianni, there are users copying not only the keywords but the profile format too! I hope they are not bidding as a Gianni Pastore v.2.0 but this people tend to copy everything
Unfortunately, we can not do nothing as keywords are not patentability material.

Now when someone plagiarizes my name then I'll get mad. Not until then.
Forget it, it is someone who is just too lazy to make their own list.

I understand your frustration. I wouldn't be happy either.
However, imagine the person who is too lazy to create their own content. Can you imagine how lazy they will be to actually write their profile? And then, how lazy they will be to do a good job? I don't trust such people...
So, while that person will eventually get more or less the same Google rank you have, s/he will disappoint potential clients much more easily as well. So, who will still be standing in the end?
I must admit though that I not-so-secretly hope that there are too many keywords in that person's profile for Google's liking, and s/he simply will be locked out of search engines for it. Ah, karma!

It looks like someone used to be a spammy webmaster and now wants to be a translator
That amount of keywords - only someone who seriously misunderstood the concept of driving traffic to your profile

Yeah, it actually crossed my mind to contact this user... but then again, what for? I have no rights on these words, I am only disappointed the site allows this kind of behaviour. Never mind!
Thanks for you support, folks!
Gianni

Unfortunately, there's a huge chance that this person will decide to save him/herself the burden of writing his/her own profile by "borrowing" profile info and CVs from other site members/users.
Of course, any similarities will be merely a coincidence.
PS: Yikes! I just visited your profile, Gianni, and saw your keywords. "Shared" my ***! Whoever said that is either completely blind or didn't even bother to glance at your profile and didn't take you seriously, considering how specific and specialized your keywords are.

I agree, Andrea, that this person may well just copy someone else's profile. However, if I am not mistaken, unlike keywords, the site doesn't tolerate profile copycats. So, if you check out somebody's profile and realize it is a copy of yours, then you can have the person remove the content you created.
Keywords may not be protected at all - but your experience, credentials and your profile do belong to you.
Um, staff? Can you please explain how profiles are protected against theft within the site?

... that this "user" does not declare to be specialized in Music, yet has copied very specialized Music-related words.

I think this thread fits just fine in one of the "Business" forums. More people would see it if it weren't tucked away down on the page, and perhaps the perpetrator of this travesty would be rebuked in front a lot more readers!
