QHE,

QHE,

Thanks, Yueyin. That's exactly the tune I was thinking.

Steve,

At that time, people often teased such guys, who were very enthusiastic about fallacious argument, by quoting “Mussolini can always find a rotten excuse, not only today, but always!”

Yueyin,

It all came back to me the instant I saw the beginning of the movie. It's funny what things leave an indelible mark on us while others completely get erased. It gives a new meaning to "selective memory"(in its tradition sense), doesn't it?

YouTube actually has a link to the whole movie. For some reason, youTube always works the best for me. It could be they have better servers, or I should blame it on the crummy ol' TWC Internet service that I subscribe to.

Steve,

Thanks, QHE. I'm too cheap to spring for a fast connection. Actually what I have is good enough for what I use the Internet for. Even with the crummy connection that I have, I was able to upgrade 4 Macs to the new Yosemite OS the day it became available, all within 24 hours.

After much ado about nothing, Google Fiber is finally signing up for subscribers here in Austin (in December). I might sign up for the the 5Mb/1Mb free service. For that, Google charged a one-time $300 construction fee in Kansas City. Word has it they'll offer the same option here in Austin.

Meixia,

Nobel prizewinner Prof John O’Keefe vows to tackle Alzheimer’s timebomb
By Sarah Knapton, Science Correspondent, 06 Oct 2014

The American-British scientist John O’Keefe vowed to tackle the ‘timebomb’ of Alzheimer’s disease after winning the Nobel Prize for medicine today.

Prof O’Keefe, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, discovered that a part of the brain acts like an internal GPS system, helping us navigate, while also storing memories in space and time.

That part of the brain, the hippocampus, is the first area to show signs of damage in Alzheimer’s patients and is the reason that they struggle to remember.

...

Professor Bill Harris, Head of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, at the University of Cambridge said: "O'Keefe's and the Moser's work on the brain's system of knowing where we are, and the neurons that monitor place, has not only revolutionised our understanding of this amazing puzzle, but has also opened the door into problems of place memory and how we learn and remember routes of navigation, and what sleep and dreams may be doing for memory and performance."

UCL president professor Michael Arthur added: "John O'Keefe is one of UCL's outstanding neuroscientists and I am delighted that his work on the very basic question of how the hippocampus in the brain stores spatial information and thus allows us to navigate our way through a complex world, has been recognised by the award of the Nobel Prize in Medicine."

"Life Space" Nov 17, 2014

http://www.rush.edu/health-wellness/discover-health/life-space-alzheimers-linked

MORE 'LIFE SPACE' CUTS ALZHEIMER'S RISK

Cognitive function and the adventurous spirit

Think about your day-to-day routine: How many places do you usually go? If you're the type of person who is always out and about, who travels a lot or enjoys exploring new venues, you may be better off than those who sit at home all the time.

That's because researchers at Rush have discovered that our "life space" is intimately linked with cognitive function. Life space is the extent to which we move through our environments as we carry out our daily lives — from home to garden to restaurants to workplace and beyond.

In a study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, researchers found that seniors who had a constricted life space were almost twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as seniors whose life space extended well beyond the home.

"Life space may represent a new way to identify, out of a group of older adults displaying no memory or thinking problems, who is likely to develop Alzheimer's disease," says Bryan James, PhD, an epidemiologist in the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center and the study's lead investigator.

Yueyin,

You’re doing a lot more things right compared to me as far as expanding one’s life space is concerned. Too bad I’m a homebody and hate to travel.

But maybe playing video games might make up for it. I think I’ll make an effort to renew my interest in that.
