Hi can someone please recommend good study material for interpreting english and spanish.
I'm really interested in this but I dont know where to start...... I would really appreciate it |
|
Hi, Sylvia,
I'm using ACEBO materials, specifically, "The Interpreter's Edge" and "The Interpreter's RX". When I'm done with them (which will take me a while), I plan to purchase "The Interpreter's Edge Turbo Supplement".
"The Interpreter's Edge" is for court interpreting, and is specifically related to what you'll need if you want to take the exam. I use "The Interpreter's RX" as well, because I actually do Spanish medical interpreting, and I find the RX very useful. Besides, it is useful indirectly for the court interpreting. It is very possible that the medical terms will be needed in actual court proceedings, and you also practice consecutive/simultaneous/sight skills while doing the exercises in "The Interpreter's RX".
Suerte,
Alexandra

Interesting. It is my point of view that by going to a school specifically designed to help pass the exam is essential but the real experience can only be obtained through the actual practice of interpreting on the professional level. From some other licenses (that I have obtained) had I not attended the school pertinent to the license I would not have been able to pass the exam, even if I already knew how to operate the activity relating to the license. For example in Mexico I was an assesor for the first year of secundary education and can teach adult education to Latin American adults but here in the U.S. I am not allowed to do so legally in any institution untill I obtain the appropriate licenses. And I am also encountering this to be the situation in California for Interpreters.
I only wish I could afford to do such a thing. Hats off to those of you who can, and do such a thing as to obtain their license. The income seems to make up for any investment. Good luck.

Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone is enrolled in the Sight Translation for Court Interpreters course at Southern California School of Interpretation. Or does anyone know someone who is enrolled?
I ask that because I would like the vocabulary list used for the practice written exam. I was told that it is a valuable list for the written exam this May. The test is difficult and I am looking for any advantage I can get.
Please email me directly at senorg74@gmail.com.
Thank you so much,
Ray

There is a class in the SC school of interpreting that prepares you for the written, I hear is very good
in the written you will not find much legal vocabulary. it is all regular high level vocabulary there is a book that prepares you for the witten by Ruben Murillo very good for vocabulary. There is another one by Alexandre Rainoff I have both. the sight class prepares you for the oral not the written

Hi,
I plan to take the exam. I would like to take the upcoming one in September, but if for any reason I do not feel I'm yet ready, I'll take the one in January.
I would love to be a part of a virtual study group.
I live in San Diego, and it is my understanding the San Diego State Universirty has a class/classes specific to this subject and test.
I have just bought some CDs from ACEBO to assist me in my training for the test. Haven't tried them yet, but I've heard really good comments about their material.
Can't wait to be a part of this group!
(:

Hello Everyone!
I have recently begun doing some research on the California Court interpreter certification exam.
Somehow I stumbled upon this web-page and saw the convo. you all have going on so, I was wondering. Have any of you heard of some kind of weekend crash course for the test? |
|
I have not found any weekend course, but I know that the Northrige institute of interpretation has a preparation course for the for the written exam that lasts 10 or 11 weeks. you can find info on http://niiedu.com/
there is also tutoring for the interpreter written exam at interpretsp@hotmail.com the tutoring is done via the internet.
for the oral: the northridge institute of interpretation has courses , but they are not weekend courses and also there are classes at the interpreting school in Santa fe springs, but they are 10 session classes also

Rainof, Alexander. GRE Level General Spanish and English Terminology: False Cognates and Translation/Interpretation Annotated Bibliography. Santa Monica: A-Lexis Publications, 1993.
but I can't find it any where on-line?
thank you

i'm looking for someone who has taken the japanese-english interpreter exam, or someone studying for the exam. I am.
I'd like to share study materials, info, etc.
I want to take the upcoming september (written) exam, but don't feel quite confident enough... I'm even less sure about the oral exam...
But I've been studying for it for years on my own and feel like I just need to go ahead and do this, tired of whimping out a couple of days before the payment due date!
Is there anyone out there who can help me with your insight and details about the japanese exam??

Ayako, Acebo (my favorite company that produces materials for self-study) has tapes in several languages, including Japanese! Check this link:

While I thank everyone who generously recommended study materials for the written portion of the test, I must say I never did anything to specifically study for it. And yet, my results on the written exam were not bad: 87% in English, 86% in Spanish. Of course, there is room for imporvement, but it is way higher that 70% required for passing it.
All I did was to read a lot, in both languages. Books (both fiction and non-fiction), magazine articles, interesting websites... I did not do it with the purpose of "preparing for the exam", but simply for my own pleasure and self-education.
One tip: when you read and come across an unfamiliar word, look it up in the dictionary. You might have a temptation to skip the word and keep on reading - resist this temptation, stop the reading and reach for the dictionary! If you are away from home and do not have a dictionary with you, mark the word with a pencil and look it up as soon as you can.
When it is my own copy of the book, I mark the new word right on the page and then review the pages with new words, making sure I still remember the meaning. It works better than flashcards, as I see the word in context.
Other than this, I have no secrets on passing the written. I'm still waiting for the results of my oral test.
