It's finally available, and I'm wondering if anyone here has already tried it. I've gotten so sick of waiting for it, or for any meaningful changes to the program for that matter, that I have been actively testing other options lately. I like TO3000 just fine but I will look into it. It sounds like you might be interested in it after all?

ibaccs import failed May 2, 2017

Hi Michael,

I wanted to try ibaccs but the import of the TO 3000 backup file failed. So I stick with good old TO 3000.

Kind regards

Noe

First impression - deeply disappointed May 3, 2017

Moreover, it looks to me that the databases from the old and the new versions have different formats (at least the DB in the current version has the .FDB extension while the demo DB in the new version has the .MDF extension) so the databases will be incompatible.

There is still no possibility to simply choose the job folder to add it to the record, despite several requests made in the past.

At this point I decided not to waste my time anymore, at least so far.

Yes, I was worried that would be the case. My experience with AIT is that they are very, very slow at developing, and when they do, the final product leaves quite a bit to be desired. They seem to be nice guys, but there is definitely something wrong somewhere. Especially after using programs like CafeTran and BaccS, which are each the creation of single guy, and developed at an amazing pace, and where user requests are implemented almost overnight, the TO3000 team really look bad.

If the 3D version really is that bad, I don't think I will be upgrading. The update from the one before the current version to the current version was also a farce: exactly the same clumsy program, with like 1 little change, and none of our features implemented. I have been asking for basic little fixes now for like 5 years, and they are completely incapable of fixing them.

The only reason I haven't already switched to BaccS (http://www.ibaccs.com/ ) is I have around 8 years of data in TO3000, and don't want to waste any of my valuable translation time messing around learning a new program/system. For months now, whenever I have a moment to spare, I have been playing around with BaccS, and it really looks cool. But most importantly, I think the developer is a great, energetic guy, and a good coder, which means a lot in my book. I like using software that feels alive. Yeah, I kn ow, I'm a bit of a ners like that

Anyway, BaccS’s TO3000 data importer is getting better and better, and I might just be able to make the switch one of these days soon. I really hope so.

Btw, I tried out the 3D version of Projetex, as I know if shares a lot of code with the new TO3000 3D version, and immediately uninstalled it. What a terrible program!

Hi Noe,

The developer of BaccS (Yauhen/Eugene) fixed something in the TO3000 data importer only yesterday (in Build 1.1.15), so I would try it again. It could also be that you didn't follow his instructions, as I failed to do initially. You need to make sure you create the correct "work types", etc. in the program, before importing your TO3000 .db file.

No new TMs/corpora to download as I have been very busy learning how to use LogiTerm (http://www.terminotix.com/index.asp?content=brand&brand=2&lang=en ) lately (sadly, my trial just ran out). What an amazing program. Not as a CAT tool, but as a comprehensive terminology & translation memory searching and pre-translation tool!

I get all my EU TMs/glossaries from one place: http://farkastranslations.com/eu_translation_memories.php (highly recommended!)

Dear Michael and Noe,
Our programs are very different. When I started to develop BaccS, I knew nothing about to3000. Only after some time I started to implement importing feature. Because of these differences, it's difficult to predict all possible cases and guarantee smooth transition. We have a number of successful switches (the biggest one contained about 1300 jobs), and number of them were possible only after some fixes, while others worked well. I told Michael that he has much chances to fail with importing, but finally we'll force it to work. So, if you encounter any crash, please spend 30 seconds before uninstalling to send me crash log (crash.log file in the program folder, which is created automatically on any crash situation) to admin at ibaccs.com. So, if you like the program in general, don't worry about importing data - if it fails now, it will work tomorrow. With time, if you will help with bug reports, these problems will go away at all. Thank you!

Natalie
Just a small technical note. FDB means Firedird - it was a local database. MDF is SQL Server database. This means that during program installation you had to install SQL Server Express. It runs with Windows and sits in memory. IMO, for personal software this is not good choice, because database is separated from the program, and program depends on installed SQL Server. It is good for network software, when access to one database is needed from different places. If SQL Server will have default configuration, than database will be stored somewhere in C:\Users\...
In BaccS I use embedded SQL database (SDF format instead of MDF), which allows to easily copy the whole program folder to any place (another folder, usb drive, Google drive), and it will still work. I'm working on software for small LSPs, and in this case it requires to use SQL Server to put database on a local server, Internet (i.e. Azure), etc. For us, freelancers, usage of SQL Server can bring a lot of problems, because we know nothing about these server things, and in case of problems it will be difficult to reinstall and restore everything. * Just personal opinion.*

Hi Eugene, and thank you for the explanation - it is good to understand such things May 4, 2017

It looks to me (more and more) that I will definitely avoid upgrading to the new TO version (at least in its current shape).

And perhaps will switch to BaccS in the future

You are one of very few who had that experience. If you search the archives here, you'd notice that AIT was (until they stopped) quite well-known for being very responsive to users' comments and requests in the development of their software.

Yes, I had a very good experience with these folks, however, no suggestions/fixes/requests have been implemented since ver. 11.

I have a feeling someone left AIT, which might explain the change of development pace and responsiveness. I seem to remember one of their people left, after an argument, and if I remember correctly, he started Protemos (https://protemos.com/ ). I might be completely wrong, so pls excuse me if I'm spouting nonsense.

Import function for TO3000 data in LSP.Expert May 5, 2017

As I wanted to migrate from TO3000 to another similar tool (TO3000 being not really maintained anymore and too heavy for my needs), I found an online tool called LSP.Expert ( https://www.lsp.expert ). The support is highly reactive and efficient. Just wanted to share my experience.

Thanks for the info Nicolas! I had a look at LSP.expert a while back, but wasn't entirely convinced. Here is my ever-growing list of possible options:

For freelancers:

– OTM SOLISTA: http://www.lsp.net/otm-solista-project.html (see "OTM" below)(development seems to have stalled back in 2014)
– ]project translation[ (open-source TMS, but requires some costly plugins, e.g. database for freelancers, to become fully usable in an agency)
– Quahill (fully-fledged software for agencies (or freelancers), including CRM): http://www.quahill.com/en/index.html (ugly and expensive)
– TO3000 (Translation Office 3000): http://www.to3000.com/
– BaccS: http://www.ibaccs.com/ ($75: all-time licence)(very interesting effort worth keeping an eye on; I am currently 90% certain I will switch to this after TO3000; with a working TO3000 data importer!)
– MiniTPMS: http://minitpms.com/ (mysterious project. no actual app yet, but LOTS of talk, a lot of it amusing. see below)
– Promikbook (looks interesting, but it's all in Swedish)
– Protemos: https://protemos.com/ (online, Freelance and Enterprise versions. Freelance version is free, Enterprise has 3 months trial)
– TOM Solito for Freelance Translators: http://www.jovo-soft.de/en/freelancer-translation-management/ ((see "TOM Agency" below)
– LSP.expert (€9/month)

Corporate stuff:

– LTC Worx
– OTM (Online Translation Manager): http://www.lsp.net/online-translation-management.html (see "OTM SOLISTA" above)
– ]project translation[ (open-source TMS, but requires some costly plugins, e.g. database for freelancers, to become fully usable in an agency)
– Plunet: http://www.plunet.com/en/
– XTM: https://xtm-intl.com/
– XTRF: xtrf.eu
– Protemos: https://protemos.com/ (online, Freelance and Enterprise versions. Freelance version is free, Enterprise has 3 months trial)
– Projetex: www.projetex.com (from the same people that made TO3000)
– Smartling (‘End-To-End Translation Management Solution’): https://www.smartling.com/products-services/
– TOM Agency Edition: http://www.jovo-soft.de/en/translation-management/ (see "TOM Solito" above)
– Translation Projex at http://www.translationprojex.com/
– Wordbee: http://www.wordbee.com

Accounting solutions (can also be used by translators, but require a bit of fiddling / some workarounds):

– ClearBooks: https://www.clearbooks.co.uk/
– KashFlow
– FreeAgent
– QuickBooks Online
– Xero
– Freshbooks

#############################

I'm currently still using TO3000, but will almost certainly be switching to BaccS in the next couple of days.

Update: I'm switching from TO3000 to BaccS! May 7, 2017

If you're considering trying the new TO3000 3D beta, I would highly recommend also trying the amazing new Windows-based program called ‘BaccS’. It's way cheaper, and much better, and its (sole) developer has only been working on it for a few months. He implements features and fixes bugs within only days and is extremely enthusiastic and responsive.

BaccS has all kinds of useful features/things that TO3000 doesn't have, many of which, TO3000 users have been asking for for years. For example:

• BaccS has an amazing/clear calendar/scheduling pane, which is automatically linked to your Google calendar. Create a job, and it automatically pops up in your Google calendar, including an event on its deadline.
• It took AIT many years to finally add search functionality to TO3000, which is finally available in the 3D version. BaccS has had it from day one.
• AIT finally added a Dashboard to the 3D version, but it's all but useless. The Dashboard in the BaccS is so much better, and can be customized.
• BaccS has a plethora of themes, can make it look like anything you want
• There is a little notepad on the Dashboard, which I find very useful
• BaccS has a TO3000 data importer
• BaccS has a so-called "First-run assistant", to help you get started
• TO3000 3D automatically installs (1) Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDB (231MB) + (2) Microsoft SQL server 2012 Native Client (13.7MB), and can't run without them. Programs that install and need Microsoft SQL Server are never a good idea, unless absolutely necessary. Across, e.g., also forces you to install Microsoft SQL Server....
• Eugene/Yauhen implements features requested by BaccS users in mere days, and is extremely enthusiastic and responsive. Compare this with TO3000, which has several 5-year-old bugs that have never been fixed.
• BaccS has all kinds of automatic word stat and performance reports, and a work timer
• BaccS has an amazing Invoice Template editor
etc.

I own the current version of TO3000, but have never been happy with it, and am currently in the process of switching to BaccS. BaccS also has a fully functional TO3000 data importing tool, so you can switch from one to the other relatively easily, and just continue where you left off yesterday in TO3000.
