Oui, je pense qu'il ne s'agit pas vraiment de détecter une proximité , mais une rotation sur le banc de test par l'intermédiaire d'un capteur classique dit "roue codeuse"

Thank you for that explanation, which does help quite a bit.

There is nothing wrong with the language used, it's just that in EN we can use one word to qualify another in a way that is not possible in FR.

On the basis of what you have said, I believe my original hunch was correct — oddly enough, a few years back, I was translating about some quite similar bits of equipment!

So I believe the 'tacho' detector measures the rotational speed (presumably, of the vehicle wheel) — this may well be a toothed wheel type encoder, as Abel has suggested, though the context doesn't actually say that, so it would amount to over-translation.

However, I believe the 'detect' swicth is simply there to detect the presence of the wheel — we don't quite know for what reason, it might be, for example, to inhibit the measurement until a wheel is actually present; or, to detect that the wheel is correctly positioned before the test begins. There are of course very many other possibilities, which I would hope your wider context makes clear.

avec banc d'essai de freinage/suspension/amortisseurs et testeur de ripage. Je pense en effet qu'ils essayent de différencier les deux détecteurs de proximité en employant des termes qui ne conviennent pas et cela crée une confusion.

Ces détecteurs sont en fait des capteurs d'impulsions électro-magnétiques.
La roue dentée passe dans une sorte d'étrier qui a d'un côté un émetteur IR par ex. ou un aimant et de l'autre un récepteur (détecteur) qui reçoit des impulsions de coupure du champ et qui est associé à une électronique qui compte les impulsions.

Clearly, your system uses two types of proximity switch — those for the purposes of 'tacho' ( = measure the rotational speed of something) and for 'detect'. However, in the latter case, we don't know why this distinction is being made / is necessary — on the face of it, it seems as if they are simply detecting the fact that the 'wheel' is present! In order to better understand the logic of what is going on here, it would help a great deal to have more context, about what all these 'wheels' and 'rollers' are actually doing? Is this, for example, a 'wheel' that is the product being manufactured which is moving along a conveyor made of rollers? Anything to help us understand the situation would I feel sure make it easier to decide just how to render this notion of 'detect'
