It evolved from the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century and mixed sophistication with a casual informality in material and form. The simplicity and naturalism of the First Bay Tradition was a reaction to the cookie cutter opulence of Victorian style houses that became hugely popular in San Francisco.

同意 urst: me gusta generalizado // it makes perfect sense, considering the amount of Victorian houses lining the streets of SF (looking very much the same). Gingerbread is one thing, cookie cutter another.

I would not attempt to translate "cookie cutter" in this context. It stands for frills, frilly decorations etc. and thus I suggest something along those lines. Good luck.

同意 GoodWords: Or "adornado". I think the author was confused, and was thinking of ornately ornamented Victorian *gingerbread* houses, quite different from mass-produced, standardized houses.

中性态度 Kim Metzger: Yes, the architecture was ornate, but I think the author knew what he was saying with "cookie cutter". One house after another used the gingerbread style - so it was like mass production.
