English英语词条或短语: middle initial/s
Hi Proz,

This seems simple, but I can't get my head around it. Before anyone asks, yes, I have reviewed previous kudoz but haven't found the answer I'm looking for.

There is a problem with "segundo nombre" in that the option includes "initial/s", i.e. allowing for more than 1 middle name initial. Therefore, would "2º nombre" still be correct? Could one say "segundos nombres" and therefore "segundas iniciales"?

I've never heard of such a thing as "nombre medio" or "intermedio" and am not sure therefore that "iniciales medias" or "iniciales intermedias" would be understood.

The problem is that these are the Spanish captions for a global application which has to have the same structure in all countries, even though in Spain this is meaningless. I cannot alter it to leave out middle initials or replace it for a 2nd surname...I'm not even sure that I could write "apellidos" instead of "apellido" in the surname area...

The client says it's important to translate exactly what there is, and the little red devil on my shoulder is whispering "What the client means is <<do a literal translation and forget about it>>". Do I listen to him?

Thanks for your ideas,

Álvaro :O) :O)

Henry Hinds: 12:42 Apr 12, 2005: Isn't it nice, Álvaro, that our clients are so culturally senstitive? Spanish names are composed diiferently that English names. Think also of Asian cultures where the surname comes first. The form needs to be adapted to each culture. -
Álvaro Blanch (asker): 09:09 Apr 13, 2005: You said it all... - Hi Henry - I don't really think it would be that much extra work and it could not only be more considerate but also avoid confusion and data entry errors. However, the person on the other end may well have too much on his/her plate already and not want to have something else to worry about. As someone said, we are a sum of ourselves and our circumstances (or something like that!) :O) :O) :O)
Álvaro Blanch (asker): 09:21 Apr 13, 2005: Thank you everyone! - Eventually I used "Inicial/es 2º nombre", which satisfied the red imp too! Feigola's suggestion was the most similar, so there are the points, but I'd liketo express my gratitude to all for such interesting suggestions and feedback. The fact that it was "initials" and not name made that little bit trickier, as well as the reason for not choosing avr's or cisternas's suggestions. Landes, your comment is very interesting, I was completely unaware of the fact a middle initial could be the initial of your mother's surname. Unf. I haven't had time to check it out but, from that perspective, then my case could be "Inicial del segundo apellido" (not nombre) and could therefore satisfy all...in any case, as I said, I wuold have to check it out and in this case there just wasn't enough time. Camelia, your suggestion was similar to Feigola's but came in second, sorry.

Bueno, en pocas palabras, ¡Mil sonrisas y gracias a todos/as! :O) :O) :O)
Henry Hinds: 13:44 Apr 13, 2005: In the U.S. a middle initial can be the initial of the mother's surname (a good example is John Fitzgerald Kennedy), but that custom is not widely observed. It can be and usually is just another given name. -
Álvaro Blanch (asker): 14:00 Apr 13, 2005: Gracias de nuevo Henry - Sin duda la promera opción habría sido la de convertir el formulario, pero...

inicial/es de segundo/s nombre/s
说明:
Well, seems a bit too complicated, but maybe in this way you could solve the problem with the number of middle names

inicial del segundo nombre**

说明:
They (US) use a middle name (not a second name), which usually is mother`s single last name. JKF, as an example, wuold have been John Kennedy Fitzgerald.
If you use two last names (i.e. García Pérez), they get confused and consider Pérez THE last name. So, they would write Juan G. Pérez. If you sure two last names in Spanish, be sure to write García-Pérez, connected. Jean Claude Vandamm is not Jean C. Vandam, you see?
So, my suggestion:
1. Use only first last name (father`s)
2. If you have to use two last names, connect them with a -
3. Yes, say "inicial del segundo nombre)
Conclusion: Juan Pablo Pérez García sería Juan P. Pérez-García.
I hope this helps.

同意 Carlos Mota: Totally agree. The middle initial, thus, carries a significance in the United States; it relates the bearer to his mother's ancestry.

inicial/segundo nombre (de haberlos)

说明:
Why don't you use both. I understand that this is for an application form. In Chile, at least, some people have just one name; others have more than two. And in the case of the States, they use initials...so it depends on the country...
