The background to this sentence is that the text argues that civilisations are always evolving which is why it is difficult to find some kind of standard that allows us to compare civilisations.
Any good ideas on how this fragment could be translated? Thank you very much |

I ignore the rest of the context. It all depends on how you\'ve \"spinned\" the target language text so far. But, no, it doesn\'t have to be plural. I chose plural to make it more general.

No creo que se refiera al surgimiento de nuevas civilizaciones sino, más bien, a la renovación y "re-creación" de las ya existentes, lo que hace imposible la comparación entre civilizaciones, pues las características de unas y otras varían. Y sí, es necesario utilizar el plural, al menos en mi versión.
Eso del surgimiento de nuevas civilizaciones me suena a historia antigua. Hoy en día, bastante impracticable.
