que es metonímico y sí se refiere "al banquillo". No al "banquillo" literal, sino al elenco de recursos (relevistas / jugadores que están "en el banquillo" como "reservas"...). Pues eso. :-)

El bullpen es el área de calentamiento de los lanzadores antes de entrar en un juego. Dependiendo del estadio o parque, puede estar situado en territorio foul a lo largo de las líneas de las bases o simplemente más allá de la valla del outfield. El término se utiliza también para referirse al colectivo de los lanzadores relevistas del equipo. Estos relevistas suelen esperar en el bullpen cuando aún pudiesen entrar en juego, y no en el dugout con el resto del equipo. El lanzador abridor también hace su calentamiento final en el bullpen antes de iniciar el juego.

Estoy de acuerdo con lo que dice Wikipedia. Al menos en Venezuela le dicen directamente bullpen y se refiere al área de calentamiento de los lanzadores. La banca es el dugout (In baseball, the dugout is a team's bench area and is located in foul territory between home plate and either first or third base. - ref: Wikipedia)

Eso, el relevista "calienta" en una zona especial... tira bolas al catcher... no lo puede hacer en el "bullpen" por razones de espacio.
Ahora bien, no entiendo por qué dices que la "warm-up area" está en el bullpen.
No es así, en mi entender.

The Bullpen

The middle and late-innings relievers don't sit on the bench with the rest of their team, but normally sit in a warm-up area known as the "bullpen". It generally takes a pitcher five to ten minutes to get warm, so when the manager thinks he may need a pitcher out of the bullpen, you'll see a telephone call made to the bullpen to get a pitcher warming up.

Quite often a pitcher will warm up in the bullpen because the pitcher on the mound [= el que está lanzando en el momento] is getting into trouble and may need replacing. Then the pitcher gets himself out of the jam and the bullpen pitcher sits down again. There's only so many times a pitcher can warm up without risking injury though, and it may be that after a couple of false alarms he's no longer available to pitch in that game.

El bullpen no es el lugar donde calientan los jugadores: simplemente están sentados ahí: es la banca. Cuando un relevista va a entrar, va a una zona especial de/para calentamiento. Precisado.

Normalmente lo entendería así, pero aquí dice que se dedica a eso. No hay un pitcher que se dedique a lanzar en el bullpen. ¿Será un lanzador de relevo?

No exactamente: son lanzadores de reserva, en la banca, sustitutos. Strike one!

Bullpen es el lugar donde calientan el brazo los lanzadores o pitchers. Quizás puedas colocar algo como "lanzador de calentamiento". Me imagino que se refiere a un lanzador que ayuda a calentar a otros lanzadores que van a entrar en el juego
