Dem neuen Papst Benedikt XVI. wird ein besonders gutes Verhältnis zu den Mitgliedern der „kleinsten und friedlichsten Armee der Welt“ nachgesagt, und Bundesrat und Verteidigungsminister Samuel Schmid lobte die vereidigte Garde als eine dem Wesen nach „eidgenössische“, auf gemeinsame Verantwortung ausgerichtete Institution, ein Vorbild an Pflichtbewusstsein, aber auch Botschafterin der Schweiz.
I cannot figure out the meaning of "ausgerichtete", or to be honest the later part of the sentence.
