In contrast to these, "retrieval" of data often refers to data which were "lost" in some way (like "recovery")

Generally speaking (although you probably know this), you can access data to edit/change them, without necessarily seeing them in detail (e.g. bulk data). You can also have data "displayed" on a screen/display. The most basic (and in your case generally suitable) of these functions is "load", since this is what happens in all cases.
