German德语词条或短语: Freibrüter
Birds in this book are described as either Hoehlenbrueter (birds that build nests in cavities) or Freibrueter (which I take to be the opposite of Hoehlenbrueter - perhaps meaning that they build their nests in the open. However, I don't know if there is an English word for this...)

Armorel Young: 20:37 Mar 28, 2006: Seems a strange distinction to me - where does that leave birds who rest their nest on the branches of a tree? - that seems to me to be neither in a Höhle nor im Freien. -
Cetacea: 11:56 Mar 29, 2006: The German word "Höhle" doesn't only mean cave, it also means cavity, so a hole in a tree trunk qualifies as well. "Frei" in this sense refers to "no walls around it", "wall-free", so to speak... ;-) -

说明:
I've found various ways to classify birds, and Cetacea's answer is spot on as a translation of Freibrüter in this classification into two types of breeder. A more complete classification would be into four nesting guilds:

ground-nesters, shrub-nesters, canopy-nesters, and cavity-nesters

Outside nesters lose their young to cold weather or predators about half of the time.
Birds that nest in a hole, or cavity, have better luck. Cavity nesters raise healthy young birds about two-thirds of the time. Young birds in cavities can stay in the nest longer because predators cannot find them as easily. Those extra days give them time to grow bigger and stronger before facing the dangers of the outside world.

The overwhelming majority of nests we found (74%) were located on the thinned plots. Nest survivorship rates for each of four nesting guilds (ground-nesters, shrub-nesters, canopy-nesters, and cavity-nesters)

不同意 Cetacea: wild breeders are (the number of) birds that breed in the wild as opposed to those in captivity./ Don't be too hard on the poor Langenscheidt, Kim; it's good for a lot of things.

open-nesting birds

说明:
There is an English term for this: open-nesting birds as opposed to cavity-nesting birds.

And you're right, they do build their nests out in the open like e.g. a blackbird, rather than in a tree trunk like e.g. a woodpecker.

Of course "out in the open" might be a little misleading, as those nests are usually well hidden, but they're not surrounded by solid walls of timber or rock.
