German term or phrase: Stummeln
This is the definition I have from my client - no further context at the moment, except that the "textiles" involved are likely to be associated with car interiors (e.g. headlinings).

I appreciate the research and the comments that have gone into this; however, a third party appears to have got to the origin, via the term Stummelnaht, with this reference: http://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:GB-hum31T70J:www.pfaff-industrial.de/ISA/schmetz-sf_innenausst_e.pdf+stummelnaht+seam&hl=de&ct=clnk&cd=1

"The term “midget seam” or “Stummelnaht” in Ger-
man was created by DaimlerChrysler determining a double
chain stitch seam with exactly defined sewing parameters
and the lowest possible amount of seam allowance."

agree  Giovanella (X): I feel pretty confident that this correct, but there is a difference between butting seams and a butt seam. Butt seams are adjacent, butting seams are double stitched
