Environmental degradation
16. The rise of a worldwide industrial civilization during the past century and the parallel development of more intensive forms of agriculture - based on the use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides - needed to feed and clothe a rapidly expanding population has placed unprecedented pressures and stresses on the world's ecosystems. The problems and dangers are manifold. In industrialized regions, the combustion of fossil fuels, the 'life blood' of modern civilization, is resulting in an acidification of soils which is having a destructive impact on plants, forests and aquatic life in lakes and rivers. The use of fossil fuels is also responsible for the buildup of 'greenhouse gases' that are a key factor in global warming which is changing weather patterns and raising ocean levels around the world. Even a modest rise in the Earth's average temperature, of say two to three degrees, would result in the inundation of vast amounts of fertile low-lying coastal lands and the disappearance of many islands. A growing dependence on chemicals, many of which have never existed in nature, is having a damaging impact on plants and animals, leading even to the extinction of certain species and thus to a reduction in the world's biodiversity. Chemicals are affecting the stratosphere, depleting ozone and exposing the Earth's surface to higher levels of ultra-violet radiation known to cause skin and other cancers. In the developing countries, land degradation presents perhaps the most immediate and urgent problem. As agricultural land per capita diminishes as a result of population growth and urbanization, it becomes essential to preserve the productivity of every available acre.

Fundamentos y Descripción del Curso
El objetivo de un plan de estudios de “español y cultura” es insertar al estudiante en la vida en sociedad, como así también, ampliar el campo de conocimientos de la lengua española propiciando un desarrollo interdisciplinario que integre el análisis y la reflexión de diversos aspectos de la cultura argentina y latinoamericana de acuerdo con los siguientes objetivos:

La lectura, el comentario y la reflexión sobre los textos pretenden estimular las capacidades de comprensión de la lengua española.
- 3º Módulo – Español en Argentina, cultura vernácula, manifestaciones populares: acercar un panorama teórico-vivencial sobre las diversas manifestaciones culturales surgidas del ámbito popular y que en la actualidad conforman un acervo cultural en constante evolución y que forma parte de una cultura activa y con características particulares propias de cada región.

“Spanish language and Latin American and Argentine culture” (in COINED — Córdoba)
Fundaments and Description of the Course
The goal of the “Spanish and Culture” plan of studies is to insert the students into the Argentine social life as well as to broaden their scope of knowledge in the Spanish language. This will foster an interdisciplinary development that would integrate the analysis and reflection of several aspects of the Argentine and Latin-American culture, according to the following objectives:
Module 1 – Spanish and History: Get the students acquainted with the main events of the Argentine and Latin American history in times of the colony, the independence, the period of formation of the Latin American nations, and the recent history. There will be analysis of turning points and projections to understand the present.
Module 2 - Spanish and Literature: Bring students closer to the Argentine literature throughout the reading of its leading representatives and the analysis of the socio-cultural contexts in which they have developed. The reading of the texts, together with their subsequent discussion and reflection, try to stimulate Spanish language comprehension skills.
Module 3 – Spanish in Argentina, Vernacular Culture, Popular Manifestations: Bring forward a theoretical and experientialist-based panorama of the different cultural manifestations arisen out of a popular environment, which nowadays form part of a cultural tradition in continuous evolution and a dynamic culture that takes on particular characteristics, representative of each region.
a) Tango: origin, socio-cultural and artistic aspects (musical evolution, lyrics, dances, etc.).
b) Folk music: origin, socio-cultural and artistic aspects (musical evolution, lyrics, dances, etc.).
c) Argentine national rock music: National rock music tradition, development and influence in Latin America, foremost exponents.
d) Painting and audiovisual arts (Argentine art in images).
e) Different indigenous cultures: Cultural expressions, history and current situation.
f) Popular festivities: carnivals, regional popular celebrations, religious traditions, etc.
g) Popular shows and culture: the football, concerts, etc.

Under supervision, performed laceration repair, determined indications for tetanus prophylaxis, digital nerve blocks, initiated basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, catherization, started IV’s, irrigation and drainage of minor wounds and made appropriate consultation service requests when warranted.
