Of course, specialists will yell out that, one more time, Hollywood wrote its own version of roman history, but I disagree : this time, Hollywood really made an effort !

I think it is worthwhile to have a look on it.

Hi Thierry!

I haven't lost any of the both episodes. I am ENTHUSIASTIC about the serial. From what I can tell, it is the most faithful rendering I have ever seen on the screen. Plus, it's glorious! Maybe too much blood and sex on some occasion, but hey, we already get that in all other serials, so why not some genuine Roman action?

Jokes apart, I love it. I won't miss an episode!

Flavio

Tks for you reply and enthusiasm Flavio : as a matter of fact this serial is fantastic indeed ! But you will soon realize (from episode IV and even before) that Hollywood could not resist to give its own version of the History.
Nevermind ! This fiction still remains the "best one" I ever seen ! I have seen the 12 episodes in English (pse kindly dont'ask me "how"...) and, in spite of some "funny" things, it remains "rather" close of the History... Just await episode 10 where you will disco

Nevermind ! This fiction still remains the "best one" I ever seen ! I have seen the 12 episodes in English (pse kindly dont'ask me "how"...) and, in spite of some "funny" things, it remains "rather" close of the History... Just await episode 10 where you will discover a surprising Cleopatra, with a pop singer look, smoking opium and acting as a nymphomania !!! Episode 9 where Octavius loose his virginity in a "de Luxe" brothel in Roma !!! Episode XI where Octavia is supposed to commit an incest with his brother Octavius (which is tremendously unlikely from an historical point of view) and a few others...
In spite of all these rather "strange" events, the whole product remains "DPM"...

The serie raised a tremendous interest here in Spain besides the "Roman freaks" Forums... People are fighting there about the shape of the roman helmets (with a ring, or without a ring ?), orders transmitted by centurions to manipules using a whistle, rules of behaviouring during an initiation ceremony to Cybeles (personally I argued that it looked like an initiation ceremony to the cult of Mythra...) and so on...

No I shan't spoil it for you.

How can you spoil anything that happened 2,000 years ago? The real treat in the series is not so much the story, that we all know (yeah, yeah, Caesar gets killed in the end), but the way the story is presented. I have seen the first full season and it is simply glorious.

I missed most of the chapter that ends with Titus Pullus and his friend fighting gladiators. Why did it happen?

No kidding ?

The interests remains, somehow, that in this version, Caesar does not say to Brutus " Tu quoque fili "... Which is rather strange due to the fact that this "cliche" is one of the most widely spreaded in the world. Even "Suetonius" (who could be considered as the worst malicious gossip of antiquity) does not confirm it.

I have seen the whole 12 episodes (the english version) and I found there a bunch of things really outstanding : one of the most surprising one was the supposed incest between Octavia and his young brother Octavius (the future Augustus)!!!

Octavia, when her husband C. Claudius Marcellus (from whom she got three children) died, were immediately maried to Marcus Antonius, in order to sceal the treaty of Brindisium. She were repudiated in 32 B.C by Marcus Antonius. In spite of this situation she growned up his two daughters and moreover all the surviving children that Marcus Antonius got with Fulvia and Cleopatra in addition of the three ones she got from Marcellus... The people of Rome used to consider her as, say, a "Saint". (*)

Now, in this TV show, we discover that this same "Octavia" is :

1/- The Lesbian lover of Brutus' mother (Servillia).
2/- The incestuous lover of his brother Octavius (later on, well known as "Augustus").

Even Suetonius did not dare to insinuate such kind of things...

That's another classical "topic" : nowadays, we dont' even know "where" was - exactly - the "Rubicon"... And, moreover, even if its still does exist !

Unfortunately, sounds like a "gimmick", but as I tried to state beforehand, even "Suetonius" himself have some doubts about the quotation : "Alea jacta est"...
