It's still a bit rough around the edges, but it is already as active as the old "CafeTranslators" Google Group (which, by the way, will remain open for the time being).

Have a look:

Do users also get e-mails whenever there is a new message, with the full message, and the option to post without having to specifically visit the web site?

Hi Samuel,

You get an email (with the full message) whenever a new post is, uhm, posted (if you’ve chosen to follow the relevant subforum by clicking "Follow"). However, there is no way to post without visiting the website. I don't mind though, as clicking on the "Reply" button in the email takes you straight to the relevant page, and the forum website displays and works nicely on my various devices (Windows Phone, iPad and work laptop).

Igor only created the new site recently though and is still testing various things, so there might be a way to allow users to post from their email client/solution. I'm not sure. The website is powered by freshdesk (see: http://freshdesk.com ). It's not only a forum, but also a Knowledge base (empty as of yet), Support ticket system (to replace the old [email protected] support "system") and a software licensing portal.

PS: as far as I know, it is open to anyone, so not just registered CafeTran users, which is cool as it also contains subforums for other stuff, such as a special one called "CafeTran and TM-Town" (there is quite a lot of activity going on involving integration between TM-Town and CafeTran; great, new stuff like the ability to connect to online, shared TMs hosted on TM-Town right from in CafeTran!, etc. see also: https://www.tm-town.com + https://www.tm-town.com/blog ), and another called "General Technical Topics (not related to CafeTran)", for all kinds of stuff that will probably interest your average CAT tool nerd (like myself)

Hopefully Dominique Pivard will show up soon with an action-packed video detailing the entire history of such endeavours.

In any case, as far as I know, the new CafeTran forum is one of the only ones of its kind, in 2015.

"real forums" - a good thing really? Jul 8, 2015

AidTrans Studio was another CAT tool with a real forum. Well, it is a dead project now, just like Heartsome.

Some years ago Atril tried the same thing, which was called the Beast. And it did not work as well.

Personally, I prefer Yahoo/Google groups, despite all those new features.

SDL.com has its own Studio forum - for registered users - where you can "Ask any question related to Studio":

Hi Selcuk,

Yeah, I suspected you'd say something like that, being an old skool mailing list fan.

I think the success or failure of a forum is related to the success or failure of the CAT tool, rather than that the idea of a forum an sich is intrinsically flawed.

Being a veritable sprightly spring chicken, The Beast was a few years before my time, but I've come across little snippets of info about it here & there (primarily in various Yahoo Groups). I do feel kind of sorry for xxxLoek, who apparently really tried to make it work, but I suppose that without all the old skoolers on board, the project was doomed from the start. At the end of time, when we all get judged by the great SDL in the sky, that darned DVX Yahoo group will still be going strong

In any case, the new CafeTran forum seems to be off to a good start, and there is already quite a lot of lively discussion going on (and not only about CafeTran). Hope to see you there soon!
