Hi, I have finally paid for Trados, having used Cafetrans for a couple of years. I am no expert on the technical side so have been saving at the end of every project, everything into the TOTAL RECALL MEMORY. It there a way of transferring that memory into Trados? Looking for real idiot's guide please.

Hello,

In CafeTran Espresso:

- On the Dashboard, make sure you have selected the same language pair (language and variant) as your Total Recall table. Then, click on the Dashboard menu button (the one on the left of New and Open) and select Close Dashboard.

- Go to Total Recall menu > Recall memory.

- In the Total Recall options window that opens:

> Select the Total Recall table you wish to recall in.
> Uncheck the “Recall in contexts (hits per word)” option. This will lift the filter completely and recall all segments from the Total Recall table to the working memory.
> Uncheck the “Read only” option.
> Set “Match case” to “Keep all duplicates”. This ensures that if identical source segments are present in the memory (as it may be the case), they will all be kept. That's it, press OK.

Once the segments that were stored in the Total Recall database are open as a TM (the loading may take some time):

Memory menu > Save memory as. Select the TM from the recalled segments and save the TMX file anywhere you wish, naming it as you see fit.

[An alternative option: instead of closing the Dashboard, you can click on the Gear icon and set the Total Recall options as described above. Then open any project—new or old—in the correct language pair, and Save the TMX memory as explained].

Note: This will save every Translation Unit (TU) stored in the Total Recall table in a TMX file that you can then import into SDL Trados. I cannot know if all segments from your projects were effectively stored (and at the latest up-to-date version) in Total Recall.

---

In SDL Trados 2019:

Import the resulting TMX. The procedure is explained here: Importing TM data - https://tinyurl.com/ybjvjtb9 (link to SDL* Documentation Center).

Interestingly, depending on what you have set your languages as (en, or en-GB, e.g.), it may also be possible to open (and search) your Total Recall database in TMLookup (http://farkastranslations.com/tmlookup.php ), and then simply export the whole thing to a tabbed txt file.
