I was just wondering if one could run a search for segments/headers/words within files(not open) with the help of a tool by scanning specific regions of the computer where there is a probability of the target being there. Is there anything available for this? I know Trados does something on these lines. I was looking out for some stand alone applications.

I know it sounds a little absurd asking this..but then I thought, who knows what......

GREP Mar 9, 2009

If you are using Microsoft software, it usually comes with an OLD
program called GREP. You can "grep" for text strings, subject to
the following

GREP textstring files

Textstrring: Case sensitive unless you do GREP -i textstring files
If there are spaces, put quotes around the text

GREP -i "I am here" files

If the text contains special characters, there is a trick, I think
precede them with backslash.

files in standard format e.g.

GREP -i "i am here" MY*.txt

Note: This process works well with flat text files, NOT MS-word files
etc.

O, you can do a whole directory tree with

GREP -i -d "i am here" MY*.txt

will search current directory and all subdirectories, files beginning with MY
and ending in .txt, for the string "i am here".

Hope this helps.

Google Desktop Mar 9, 2009

Hi Umang,

Google Desktop indexes all the files in your hard drive (pdf, doc, ttx, txt, etc.) and you can do a search for a specific term or phrase.

You can download it from http://desktop.google.com/es/

It takes a while to index your hard drive when you install it, but I´ve found it very useful for looking up terms, even within exported txt TMs.

PS: Sorry I pasted the link to the Spanish version, you can change the language there.

GREPS vs Google Desktop Mar 10, 2009

Thank you Nils for taking so much effort. I am surely going to try that.. though, to start with I think I should be downloading Google Desktop if that is really going to give me the 'in'sights. Thanks so much Marina and Lori.
