Bei horizontalem Transport sowie bei Steigbetrieb ergeben sich hier die günstigsten Bandzugkräfte und die geringste Wellenbelastung an der **Umkehrtrommel**. Der Kopfantrieb ist daher die allgemein bevorzugte
Antriebsart.
Bei Abwärtstransport besteht je nach Transportbandgewicht und Neigungswinkel die Möglichkeit, dass das Transportgut den Kopfantrieb antreibt, d.h. dass eine negative Umfangskraft entsteht. In solchen Fällen ist ein Heckantrieb vorzuziehen, der Antrieb wirkt dann als Bremse.

Die höheren Bandzugkräfte und die höhere Wellenbelastung, welche beim Heckantrieb an der **Umkehrtrommel**
entstehen, verlangen möglicherweise eine stärkere Konstruktion.
Diese Tatsache wird umso bedeutungsvoller, je länger die Anlage und je größer das Gewicht des Transportguts
ist.
Wie bereits erwähnt, ist der Heckantrieb bei Abwärtstransport vorzuziehen. Der Antrieb wirkt dann als
Bremse.
