(1) Year-end membership campaign: 'Success is opportunity taken'

A year-end membership campaign is now underway with the theme "Success is opportunity taken." The campaign will run through December 12.
In this campaign, professional translators and interpreters who are not yet ProZ.com members are invited to join full members of the ProZ.com community in together "networking, expanding client bases, doing better work, and having more fun."
There are two incentives provided for those who join during this year-end campaign. The first is that membership purchased now will run through all of 2009. (In other words, those who join now get up to a month of additional membership at no additional charge.) The second incentive is a giveaway featuring these valuable prizes: a trip to a ProZ.com conference in 2009, a new laptop, and translation related software.
Existing members can renew and have a chance to win the free prizes.

(2) First annual ProZ.com translation contest ("Awakening") now in voting phase

ProZ.com translation contests are a fun way to take a break from your normal routine to test, and hone, your translation skills with colleagues.
After seven "quarterly" contests, the first "annual" version of the ProZ.com translation contest -- featuring the theme "Awakening" -- has attracted a record number of entries; there have been over 930 submissions in 83 language pairs so far. (Among them are entries in your top language pair.)
While it is still possible to submit entries in a few pairs, most pairs are now in the voting phase. Please help to select the best entries by visiting the contest pages, reviewing and rating translations submitted in your working pairs.

(4) "ProZ.com Certified PRO network" drawing interest

The "ProZ.com Certified PRO network", announced publicly for the first time in October, has been attracting interest among the community, and also beyond.
From the announcement: "The ProZ.com Certified PRO program is a new initiative of the ProZ.com community, the purpose of which is to identify qualified translators and translation companies working in various language pairs, and provide them with the option of networking and collaborating in an environment consisting entirely of screened professionals. Those accepted into the program earn the 'ProZ.com Certified PRO' title and seal, which may optionally be displayed in profile pages and elsewhere on or off the ProZ.com website."
The program has also attracted attention from those covering the industry. Interviews were conducted with three publications.

(5) Glossary-building KudoZ (GBK): a new kind of KudoZ question
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glossary-building KudoZ, a new form of KudoZ interaction, was announced after a beta testing period in five language pairs.
Rather than facilitating "help", the new mode coordinates the efforts of willing members of the ProZ.com community in building an authoritative glossary of terms and their translations in many languages and fields.
Terms are posted for translation selectively -- not by those in need of help but by a "GBK (Glossary-building KudoZ) team". Community selection is used to find the most accurate translations from among those proposed.
The expected results are (1) a glossary of terms and translations that will serve as a larger and more authoritative reference than the archive of existing "help" questions and (2) increased opportunities for KudoZ participation, along with the benefits of networking, professional differentiation and learning.
In early feedback, one member commented on her experience of "(p)roper context, wonderful well thought-out answers, backed by references."

(6) Looking for specialists for the glossary-building KudoZ program

Thanks to the conference organizers for the hard work put into planning and coordinating these events, the speakers for sharing their expertise, and all the members who attended and make ProZ.com conferences possible.
In addition, the Bangkok online powwow made its mark as the 70th and final powwow in the series of local events celebrating International Translation Day. Organized by the Royal Institute of Thailand, the powwow was broadcast internationally with the theme "Translation: An Agenda for Quality and Standards". ProZ.com presented two videos: "Translation, a vision of the market", by Enrique Cavalitto, and "The Certified Pro program", by Patrick Dotterer. (9) Justin Chlebus Memorial Scholarship now over half funded
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Justin Chlebus Scholarship has reached half of its initial funding goal of 20.000 euro. A warm thanks goes out to those who have donated generously to the fund so far.
The fund will create a one-year scholarship to be awarded to a promising and talented young person between the ages of 18-26 years old with a passion for understanding a new culture and learning a new language. The scholarship will allow the recipient to study abroad for one year in their field of choice.

With the goal of further enabling knowledge sharing, ProZ.com is working on the creation of a multimedia area.
In this new section, site users will find a comprehensive and multilingual collection of videos composed of contributions from members. It is expected that enhancing the site's knowledgebase will allow the community to benefit from additional ways of exchanging experience and expertise.
Be part of this new initiative and benefit!
Sharing knowledge is not the only goal of the ProZ.com video center. This area will also serve as another means of offering members unique forms of promotion. ProZ.com is the most-visited portal in the translation industry, and this makes it possible to offer a high level of exposure to those who contribute with content to this shared knowledgebase.
