Where does a last name come from?
A name is chosen more or less pragmatically by the parents, often with the coercive action of intrusive relatives, we receive our last name as an inheritance, unless we are abandoned at birth, and we have had to keep it since the end of the Medieval Ages, because due to social issues it became unchangeable.
Where does a last name come from? History is more or less unvarying and the Italian history can be relevant. In the archaic period there was only one name, but in the last centuries of the Republic the use of the three names was already common for the Romans, tria nomina: Marco Fulvio Nobiliore, for example, where Marco is the preanomen, the personal name, Fulvio is the name, nomen, of the gens he belongs to, in this case the Fulvio gens, and Nobiliore is the cognomen, originally it was mainly the nickname that distinguished the various homonyms. In some cases, a fourth name was added, or a new name, agnomen, to better diversify one person from another. Of course, among the nobles there were some who added other names/last names to their own liking, sometimes making very long lists.
Around the V century the system became more simple. The difference between nomen and cognomen decreased, and the supernomia or signa had arisen: unique names, not inherited, with a clear meaning, immediately comprehensible: Costantius etc. When the Empire fell, there was a returning to just one name, with a term of endearment in the family circle, along with something alluding to the characteristics of the person or to their place of origin or to their fatherhood.
With the advent of Christianity, new additions were ascribed to those of the original pagan names, many more with the barbarian invasions, and thus, the choice was quite vast; it wasn’t hard to find a way to distinguish a Deogratias from an Adelpertus. It was in the XI century that the possibility to make combinations began to fail: the population increased, the existing names started repeating, and distinguishing an individual from another became increasinly difficult. The system of last names began to be steady in Europe.
In Italy, last names were a prerogative of noble families at first, but in 1200 in Venice and in other areas in the subsequent century, even if with some resistance and delay, the use of last names spread to the poorest classes of the population. However, it was with the Council of Trento, 1564, that the clergymen were compelled to keep a sorted christening register with the first and last name, to avoid intermarriages. The nickname, or middle name, became hereditary. Everywhere? Some say that up until a little more than a century ago there were still families in the middle of nowhere, that hadn’t had a “documented” last name.
The derivation of a last name comes from, as previously indicated: proper names, terms of endearment, nicknames, situations, nationality, origin, craft. And with so many of those variants that become misleading and at times a quite hilarious reading to which we invite your attention.

Come nasce un cognome?
Un nome è scelto più o meno accortamente dai genitori, e spesso con azioni di forza di parenti invadenti, il cognome ce lo troviamo in eredità, a meno di non essere abbandonati alla nascita, e ce lo dobbiamo tenere da quando, alla fine del Medioevo, per questioni sociali è diventato immutabile.
Come nasce il cognome? La storia è più o meno uniforme e può fare testo quella italiana. In tempi arcaici era presente il solo nome, ma già negli ultimi secoli della Repubblica, presso i romani era invalso l'uso dei tre nomi, tria nomina: Marco Fulvio Nobiliore, ad esempio, dove Marco è il preanomen, nome individuale, Fulvio è il nome, nomen, della gens d'appartenenza, in questo caso la gens Fulvio, e Nobiliore è il cognomen, all'origine per lo più soprannome per distinguere le varie omonomie. In qualche caso, si aggiungeva anche un quarto nome, o nuovo cognome, agnomen, per diversificare ancor meglio una persona dall'altra. Naturalmente, c'era tra i nobili chi aggiungeva a proprio piacimento altri nomi-cognomi, costituendo a volte liste lunghissime.
Attorno al V secolo il sistema si semplifica. Si riduce la distinzione fra nomen e cognomen, e si affacciano i supernomia o signa: nomi unici, non ereditati, dal significato chiaro, immediatamente comprensibile: Costantius ecc. Caduto l'Impero, si torna ad un nome solo, con vezzeggiativo nell'ambito familiare, accompagnato da qualcosa che allude alle caratteristiche della persona o al luogo di provenienza o alla paternità.
Con l'avvento del cristianesimo, sopraggiungono nuovi nomi ad aggiungersi a quelli pagani, con le invasioni barbariche altri ancora e la scelta è piuttosto vasta, non è difficile trovare il modo per distinguere un Deogratias da un Adelpertus. È nel secolo XI che la possibilità di formare combinazioni incomincia a scarseggiare: la popolazione cresce e i nomi che girano incominciano a ripetersi, diventa sempre più difficile distinguere un individuo da un altro. Incomincia a consolidarsi in Europa il sistema dei cognomi.
In Italia, i cognomi sono prima appannaggio delle famiglie ricche, ma nel 1200 a Venezia e nel secolo seguente in altre aree, anche se con qualche resistenza e ritardo, l'uso si estende agli strati meno abbienti della popolazione. Però, è solo con il Concilio di Trento, 1564, che si fa obbligo ai parroci di tenere un registro ordinato dei battesimi con nome e cognome, per evitare matrimoni tra consanguinei. Il soprannome, o secondo nome, diventa ereditario. Dovunque? Qualcuno dice che fino a poco più di un secolo fa, c'erano ancora famiglie, in luoghi sperduti, che non avevano un cognome "codificato".
Da dove deriva un cognome, l'abbiamo detto: nomi di persona, vezzeggiativi, soprannomi, situazioni, nazionalità, provenienza, mestieri. E con tante di quelle varianti che traggono in inganno da costituire una lettura a volte spassosissima alla quale vi invitiamo.
