好好好，对对对，牛牛牛，电影《欢迎来龙餐馆》不是“译”龙为 loong，而是“拼写”为 loong。

面子是个好东西啊，千万不能丢。

现在连中国日报也把龙“拼写”为 loong 了，哈哈！可喜可贺！

功夫被拼写为 Kungfu，点心被拼写为 dim sum，coca cola 被拼写为“可口可乐”，chocolate 被拼写为“巧克力”。

那家高级翻译学院以后应该改为“高级拼写学院”了。

中国日报中华文化英文知识库网站上线，loong 成漏网之鱼

　　微信公众号“中国日报双语新闻”昨天宣布：“中国日报社精心打造的中华文化英文知识库网站‘Chinese Culturepedia’正式上线”，网址是　 [url removed]

　　笔者立即去检索了 loong，发现知识库收入了 Loong Dance。

　　正在疑惑为什么搜索 loong 只有这一个结果，突然反应过来：中华文化英文知识库网站仍然坚持译龙为 dragon，而 Loong Dance 只是漏网之鱼而已。

　　于是去搜索 dragon，果然发现了大量词条：Dragon，Dragon King (Literature)，Dragon Dance (Cultural Heritage)，Dragon Songs (Arts)，Dragon Boat Race (Sports and Games)，Fire Dragon Dance，Dragon Boat Festival (Lifestyle)，Lion and Dragon Dance，…… 等等，搜索结果共有十九页，每页十个词条，共一百八十九条。

　　报道说：“中华文化英文知识库依托中国日报全媒体平台，借助大数据与人工智能技术，系统梳理中国日报四十余年积累的英文报道资源，尤其是近年来丰富的中华文化图文、视频等融媒体资源，将浩如烟海的文化瑰宝淬炼为可触、可感、可对话的数字图谱，以百科全书式架构，提炼展示中华文明精神标识和中华文化精髓。”

　　因此这个数据库是根据中国日报四十多年的报道汇总而成，而这四十多年来，中国日报一直是译龙为 dragon 的，所以知识库主要译龙为 dragon 也是可以理解的。

　　但是，既然是“知识库”，收集的知识就应该是正确的和最新的。2024龙年，新的译龙方法 loong 被普遍接受、广泛采用，连中国日报自己都改译了，知识库理应及时更新。

I ask given that your profile mentions some prominent UK clients, and stating that you translate into English is unusual as, generally-speaking, translators work into their native language(s).

Invisible Unicode character patterns is more likely, these will remain when cutting and pasting and might survive text editing.
Whatever method is used, it should be easy to break and there will soon be (AI-based) tools to do it.

So everyone will pass, competition will be tough, and there will be strictly lowest-bidder selection.

Usually agencies are interested in the deliverable file formats, not the tool used to create them (which is no concern of theirs except maybe in an online workflow).

Personally, given how few test translations result in assignments, I'd never spend a cent on them.

Anthropic, the $2 trillion frontier lab and maker of Claude, said this week that it’ll watermark text generated by its AI models. As we reported this week, the machine-readable watermark is embedded directly in Claude-generated text but is imperceptible to the end user and does not affect the response’s meaning, quality, or readability. Anthropic said the mark will remain when content is copied and pasted and may persist through some editing. Why?? How??

As for the why, look to Europe, specifically, Article 50 of the AI Act. Under the European Commission’s framework, providers must mark generated or manipulated text, audio, images, and video in machine-readable and detectable formats, where technically feasible.

As for the how, AI tells me that, while the exact text-watermarking technique remains undisclosed, the likely concept involves statistical patterns in token and word selection. Anthropic has not confirmed this.
On to translation... AI translation is text generated by AI. Yes, there’s a source. But the target is text. And that text was generated by AI. I guess we have an edge case here.

In fact, Anthropic explicitly identifies translation as a workflow that can generate a text-based watermark, but it also cautioned that there is nuance when it comes to translations.

First, it’s likely that a human-written source translated by Claude will produce a watermarked target text. On the flip side, Claude-generated text may lose the detectable mark after translation.

Both outcomes are weird, actually.

Imagine a human handwriting an opinion piece offline in a cabin on a lake, deep focus mode. The text then gets Claude-translated and, boom, it’s now watermarked as AI content. Now imagine Claude generating an AI LinkedIn post. That LinkedIn post then gets Google translated, and boom, it may just qualify as original, human content. Fun times.”

Is it fun, I wonder?

Thank you for taking time to reply to me. I asked them if I could use Omega T, which I have used to other clients in the past, but they said no, that I would need to buy Trados before even the test. I checked the translation test, and it was not difficult. Also, I alreday work with that agency, so, as a starting point, I would have some chances of passing the test. But the payment is very low, and for that specialism, I would need to work a lot just to pay Trados, and would not worth investing my time. There is also the argument, as someone said, about the risk that should be taken by each part - freelance translator and company.

BARBED WIRE held a strange interest for the late Alan Greenspan, a lifelong urbanite. Sure, the former Federal Reserve chairman admired the railways, gold diggers and “lonesome cowboys” that helped open the frontier at the dawn of American capitalism. But he also had a soft spot in his economist’s heart for barbed wire, which, he argued, boosted productivity by allowing the settlers who came in their wake to safeguard their properties.

Like the Wild West, artificial intelligence has its frontiersmen. In America they are a dwindling bunch. Anthropic and OpenAI remain steadfastly committed to pushing the boundaries of AI. Other tech giants, including Google (a former front-runner that is shedding frontier-AI scientists at a rapid pace), are wavering. The hyperscalers appear to find it more lucrative to sell AI infrastructure to their cloud customers than splurge valuable compute on advancing their own models.

What AI doesn’t have is enough settlers. That is, the individuals and businesses who make full use of products such as AI agents, helping to justify the reams of investment pouring into frontier AI. They are put off partly because, like in the Wild West, life on the frontier is reckless. As recent “loss-of-control” episodes by the most advanced models of Anthropic and OpenAI attest, agents, which are supposed to work on people’s behalf in “alignment” with their values, lie, cheat and steal if necessary. They break free from captivity and form harmful posses to do harm to people. They’d drink whisky and brawl if they could.

Such unpredictability is too much for many firms to handle. “All you have to do is get snake-bitten once and you’d never go back,” says Jared Sine of GoDaddy, an internet firm trying to help bring order to the chaos. The need for law and order is giving rise to a new cohort of AI-infrastructure firms. They are not selling chips or compute—the typical picks and shovels of the AI gold rush. They provide protection against cyber-threats, fixes for untrustworthy and inscrutable agents, and controls if they go rogue. In other words, their business is barbed wire.

The most immediate area of danger—and opportunity—is cyber-security. Recent tests of the hacking capabilities of models from Anthropic and OpenAI revealed agents going rogue, stealing credentials, creating fake identities, setting up secret chatrooms and covering their tracks—all to the shock and horror of their human evaluators. The state-of-the-art security models, Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.6-Cyber, will no doubt help defenders, too. But, according to Dawn Song, an expert on AI and cyber-security at the University of California, Berkeley, for now the balance of power rests firmly with the attackers. There is a further snag. If organisations adopt autonomous agents, they increase the potential “attack surface” for hackers, she says.

The rising risks help explain why the valuations of cyber-security firms with AI capabilities are on a tear. Share prices of Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike, the two biggest, have roughly doubled so far this year. M&A has soared. Led by Alphabet’s $32bn acquisition of Wiz, another cyber-security firm, more than $70bn of cyber-security-related megadeals have closed in the past year. Pitchbook, a data gatherer, says AI-related cyber-security is one of the hottest areas of venture-capital (VC) investment as well.

The opportunities go beyond cyber-security. At a recent conference on agentic AI organised by Ms Song, your guest columnist heard a litany of complaints not just about the hacking potential posed by large language models (LLMs) at the peak of their powers, but about the blunders that they can make at their most clueless. One expert showed an agent-generated chart measuring the income of Europe’s top tennis players. It mistakenly omitted Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two. “This is tennis, who cares?” he quipped. But if it were the financial analysis of a company, it would have mattered. Another drew a contrast between the amount of knowledge LLMs have about quantum physics, and their inability to order a burrito.

The frailties have given rise to another group within the cohort attracting VC interest: those promising to strengthen the “trust layer” of agentic AI. One is Cyera, whose valuation has quadrupled to $12bn in 18 months. It says a lack of trust has “stalled” AI adoption recently, and provides services to prevent data leaks and unauthorised tool use. Another is Scaled Cognition, co-founded by Dan Klein, a Berkeley professor, that recently raised $100m in VC backing. It promises to reduce what Mr Klein calls the “invisible errors” produced by AI—those that are plausible enough to be missed and compound as agents perform longer tasks—by incorporating guaranteed reliability into the training of its models. Other startups specialise in creating evaluations to measure agents’ effectiveness, agent identities to determine where liability lies if they go rogue and control systems with a kill switch.

A fistful of tokens

AI has other problems on the frontier. Like the Wild West, it is cut-throat. There is competition from cheaper Chinese open-weight models. On August 10th Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta threw its hat into the ring, releasing an open-weight version of its most powerful model, called Muse Glimmer.

The frontier is lawless, too. So strong are the concerns about rogue agents that even executives of the leading AI labs are calling for the Trump administration to take a sheriff’s role—though weirdly the government is keeping its most recent framework on AI safety under wraps. What is clear, though, is that more checks and balances are needed before organisations adopt agents with anything close to full confidence. One of this year’s AI buzzwords is “harness”—the system that surrounds an LLM to keep agents on the straight and narrow. It might just as well be barbed wire.»

I'm told that the latest version of OmegaT can treat Trados packages (SDLPPX files) as source files, so yes, OmegaT can open Trados packages.

But OmegaT can't create a return package (SDLPRX file), so you have to send the SDLXLIFF files back to the client (this is why you have to ask them if it's okay to do this, because some clients do not want SDLXLIFF files -- they want the return package).

Also, a Trados package often contains a TM and a glossary. OmegaT is incapable of reading a Trados TM or a Trados glossary (although there are free tools out there that can convert SDLTM to TXM or SDLTB to CSV, which you would have to do manually each time).

Finally, a Trados package typically contains the original source file as well, and Trados can use it to generate the final translated version of the file in its original format (and some clients ask that you generate it and then do a format check on it), but OmegaT can't do that either.

Also, OmegaT can't connect to a Trados server (but: I have only ever had one single client that required me to do that).

It's not really an "opportunity". It's more of a request. The fact that you are requested to undertake a test doesn't mean that you've made it to one of the final rounds of candidates. There may be 20-30 people taking the test. Also, in the past, the agency would have had to spent money paying a reviewer to mark the test, but these days it's possible to mark the test using AI, so you may even be one of 100 people taking the test.

All of these are possible:
- They send an SDLXLIFF file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLXLIFF file.
- They send an SDLPPX file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLRPX file.
- They send an SDLPPX file, you translate it, you sent back an SDLXLIFF file.
- They ask you to log in to their Trados server via Trados, you translate the file(s), and click a button.

No, you will never recoup the costs of Trados. Trados is only useful for people who use Trados for a lot of clients or for high-paying clients. The modern version of Trados is a bit of a scam actually, because it's very expensive and translation rates have gone down tremendously in recent years (more so than in previous years).

Nevertheless, I need to buy Trados in advance, which is very expensive [I think that I need the desktop version, the online option is not suitable as it does not open projects], so, my question is: how it is the work flow? Considering that I do not use Trados for other apps, and that the pay is really low, I am wondering if I would be even able to cover the costs of Trados. Many thanks

What is this, the year 2022?

In case you didn't notice - and apparently you didn't - the ones that are "fighting" AI are mostly out of business or only parttime active as a translator. The others already use AI in some form and are not fighting it.

You seem to be teleported from the past and extremely late to the party.

The first translations I made for direct clients (no computers, no internet then, a telex was "high-tech") took me whatever time was necessary to (1) understand the text and (2) find the best translation. Which resulted in later no one questioning my rates when they approached me by recommandation.

BTW that whole thread might be worth reading.

The fundamentals of that recipe are still as valid as ever - what has changed is that nowadays you have to be very lucky to find clients who appreciate that kind of approach. Not saying it's impossible only ways ways more difficult.

Some more details: the job was translating from Serbian to French several papers to be submitted to an international conference. The whatever time was necessary part included first reading cover to cover a faculty manual in French in the subject matter, to familiarise myself not only with the terminology but also with the ways how whole sentences are usually structured. And the reports from the previous two conferences.

What also helped is that I had unlimited access to an expert in the subject matter. And that I just returned from France after primary school; lycée and university (in a completely different field).

Maybe only an interesting story from some other era, or maybe you will find some useful elements in it …

That (current) version says:

which in fact makes sense given the longish list of eclectic language pairs.

That doesn't change that a common problem with developers is that they become so engrossed with their toys (sorry, 'latest software tools') that they lose sight of what is the main real-life point of the whole exercise - or of who exactly is 'their target audience'.
