Source text - Spanish En los años de la posguerra, los estudios de serología y de la distribución de los grupos sanguíneos se desarrollaron con la intención de medir la variabilidad intra-específica en poblaciones humanas. Esto fue posible gracias a la introducción de nuevas técnicas como la electroforesis en gel y la cromatografía en papel, que fueron rápidamente incorporadas para rastrear las reacciones inmunológicas, gracias principalmente al trabajo de Harry Harris en el laboratorio Galton (a quien de Garay había conocido en Inglaterra) con isoenzimas humanas. De Garay había iniciado en 1962 y 1963, una serie de colectas y revisiones de poblaciones indígenas mexicanas para evaluar la presencia de ciertas características de origen genético (ver más arriba), sin embargo, su asociación con el grupo de Chicago fue fundamental para consolidar estos estudios, aunque resulta paradójico que estas técnicas no fueran introducidas en su laboratorio, y que estos estudios no fueran continuados posteriormente, sino hasta finales de los años 1970s.
Es de particular interés el estudio de los grupos sanguíneos llevado a cabo por los Doctores James Bowman, Paul Carson y Henry Frischer del Departamento de Medicina y Patología, de la Universidad de Chicago, y de Garay, en donde se hizo un análisis comparativo de la presencia de la enzima 6-fosfogluconato deshidrogenasa (6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase, 6-PGD) en los eritrocitos humanos en poblaciones afroamericanos en Estados Unidos, y lacandones chiapanecos en México. Esta enzima interviene en la misma vía oxidativa de la glucosa que la G6PD, generando una segunda molécula de NADPH.
El estudio consistió en el análisis de sangre de donadores del sistema de hospitales de la Universidad de Chicago, y de voluntarios sanos de la prisión estatal Joliet, en Illinois, así como de cerca de 150 indios lacandones de Chiapas que vivían en poblaciones pequeñas y separadas entre sí. Los lacandones estudiados estaban separados por la distancia y la selva de la región desde años atrás, de tal suerte que se pudieron agrupar en dos; por un lado, las poblaciones de Lacanjá y San Quintín, y por otro, las de Najá, Metzabok, Monte Líbano, Arroyo Mendez y Santo Domingo. Usando la técnica de electroforesis en gel para la detección de los diferentes alelos, encontraron que las poblaciones eran altamente homocigóticas para el alelo Pd B. Mientras que Pd A solo se encontró en 62 individuos en Lacanjá y San Quintín, en Najá, Metzabok, Monte Líbano y Arroyo Mendez se encontró el Pd A-B, aunque no se reporta la cantidad. “La probabilidad de encontrar individuos que sean homocigotos para la variante B será mayor en estas poblaciones lacandonas altamente consanguíneas, que en las de apareamiento al azar investigadas en los Estados Unidos; inversamente, la probabilidad de encontrar un tercer alelo en las poblaciones indígenas será pequeña…Estimados de las frecuencias de homocigotos PdB/PdB en los Estados Unidos, requeriría de una muestra de cerca de 2,600 individuos para obtener el número de individuos con esta combinación (PdB) encontrados en las poblaciones de lacandones.”
El desarrollo de los estudios para medir los polimorfismos en poblaciones naturales utilizando técnicas como la electroforesis en gel fue determinante para la consolidación de la genética humana y la genética molecular y de poblaciones en otros organismos como la mosca del vinagre. Es de llamar la atención que los estudios de de Garay en colaboración con los investigadores de Chicago, aparecieran publicados justamente en el mismo año en que aparecieron los artículos fundacionales de la genética de poblaciones utilizando electroforesis, a saber, H. Durante mis entrevistas con de Garay en los años de 2001 y 2002, cuando me encontraba escribiendo el libro sobre La Genética en México, este hecho no me había llamado la atención, y debido a la muerte del Dr. de Garay seguirá siendo una incógnita el porqué no continuó con la colaboración con el grupo de Chicago o porqué no introdujo esa línea de investigación y la técnica de la electroforesis en México en esos años. Los estudios sobre la medición de la variabilidad genética en poblaciones humanas usando la técnica de electroforesis fueron realizados en México en los años 1970s por el grupo de Rubén Lisker.
Translation - English Studies on serology and the distribution of blood groups were conducted in the postwar years with the aim of measuring intraspecies variability in human populations, which was made possible due to the introduction of new techniques such as gel electrophoresis and paper chromatography. These techniques were quickly incorporated for tracking immunological reactions thanks mainly to Harry Harris, whom de Garay had met in England and who was working on human isozymes at the Galton Laboratory. From 1962 to 1963, de Garay had begun to sample and examine indigenous Mexican populations in order to evaluate the presence of certain characteristics of a genetic origin (see above), although his association with the Chicago group was essential to consolidating these studies. Paradoxically, these techniques were not introduced at his laboratory, and the studies were not continued afterwards until the end of the 1970s.
Of particular interest is the study on blood groups carried out by de Garay and Doctors James Bowman, Paul Carson and Henry Frischer from the Departments of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Chicago, in which a comparative analysis was made of the presence of 6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase (6-PGD) in the human erythrocytes of African American populations in the United States and Lacandon populations from Chiapas in Mexico. This enzyme is involved in the same process of glucose oxidation as G6PD, generating a second NADPH molecule.
The study consisted of analyzing the blood from donors in the University of Chicago hospital system and healthy volunteers from the Joliet state prison in Illinois, as well as nearly 150 Lacandon Indians from Chiapas who lived in small, separate populations. Those Lacandon people studied had been separated by the region's distance and jungle for many years, and could therefore be categorized into two groups. In one group were the people from Lacanjá and San Quintín, and in the other were the people from Najá, Metzabok, Monte Líbano, Arroyo Mendez and Santo Domingo. Using the gel electrophoresis technique to detect different alleles, they found that the populations were highly homozygotic for the allele Pd B. While Pd A was only found in 62 individuals in Lacanjá and San Quintín, Pd A-B was found in Najá, Metzabok, Monte Líbano and Arroyo Mendez, although the quantity was not reported. “The probability of finding individuals who are homozygotic for the B variant will be greater in these highly consanguineous Lacandon populations than in those from random pairing in the United States. Conversely, the probability of finding a third allele in indigenous populations will be small… Estimates of the frequency of homozygotes PdB//PdB in the United States would require a sample from around 2,600 individuals to obtain the number of individuals with this combination (PdB) found in the Lacandon populations.”
Conducting studies to measure polymorphism in natural populations using techniques such as gel electrophoresis was fundamental to the consolidation of human genetics and molecular genetics, as well as populations of other organisms such as the vinegar fly. It is remarkable that de Garay's studies in collaboration with the researchers from Chicago were published in exactly the same year as that in which foundational articles appeared on population genetics using electrophoresis, namely H. Harris, 'Enzyme Polymorphisms in Man'; F.M. Johnson, C.G. Kanapi, R.H. Richardson, M.R. Wheeler and W.S. Stone, 'An Analysis of Polymorphisms Among Isozyme Loci in Dark and Light Drosophila ananassae Strains from American and Western Samoa', and R.C. Lewontin and J.L. Hubby, 'A Molecular Approach to the Study of Gene Heterozygosity in Natural Populations. II. Amount of Variation and Degree of Heterozygosity in Natural Populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura'.
I hadn't realized this fact during my interviews with de Garay in 2001 and 2002, when I was writing the book on Genetics in Mexico, and as Dr. de Garay has since died, it will remain a mystery as to why he didn't continue collaborating with the Chicago group or why he didn't introduce that line of research and the electrophoresis technique into Mexico in those years. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Rubén Lisker's group conducted studies on the measurement of genetic variability in human populations using the electrophoresis technique in Mexico.

Source text - Spanish El sitio arqueológico de Tingambato es uno de los pocos que ha sido excavado de manera extensa en Michoacán. Sin embargo, es muy poco lo que aún sabemos de él. Apenas recientemente hemos podido ubicarlo temporalmente de manera más precisa, mediante excavaciones estratigráficas controladas y fechamientos por medio de radiocarbono, que lo ubican temporalmente entre los años 450 y 700.
Con esta información temporal ya podemos entonces pensar que la multicitada presencia de la decoración talud-tablero de influencia teotihuacana debió haber llegado a Tingambato tras el colapso de aquella ciudad, como lo muestran los estudios más recientes, en el año 575, de modo que debemos descartar que es un rasgo directamente teotihuacano como se había supuesto en un principio, sino más bien un eco de dicha metrópoli. Sin embargo, sí tenemos datos que nos indican una contemporaneidad en la ocupación de Tingambato y Teotihuacán, aunque los materiales arqueológicos que los pueden vincular son nulos hasta el momento.
Entre sus edificios principales destacan dos basamentos piramidales de planta cuadrangular, escalonados con muros en talud, una gran plataforma que nivela todo el sitio arqueológico, plazas, patios hundidos, altares y cuartos organizados alrededor de los patios.
Otro elemento significativo a destacar en Tingambato es la presencia del juego de pelota hundido, con aros marcadores y forma de “I”. Este es un rasgo arquitectónico que aparece entre los años 650-900 y es uno de los más valiosos que se han encontrado en el occidente de México, lo que refleja la importancia de esta ciudad.
Como es sabido, Michoacán posee una longeva tradición de construcción de tumbas y de un complejo tratamiento a los muertos. En Tingambato encontramos importantes ejemplos de cámaras construidas bajo tierra que fueron usadas para depositar a sus muertos acompañados de ricas ofrendas. La arquitectura funeraria es sin duda una de las cuestiones que más ha llamado la atención sobre el sitio de Tingambato, así como las ofrendas que contienen.
La primer noticia que se tiene de estas tumbas la encontramos en el periódico La Voz de Michoacán del 26 de mayo de 1842, donde se reporta el hallazgo de tres tumbas alineadas de sur a norte, al parecer contiguas, a aproximadamente un kilómetro de distancia al poniente del pueblo. Otras dos tumbas se han excavado dentro del sitio de Tingambato. La primera fue descubierta el 8 de marzo de 1979 por los arqueólogos Kuniaki Ohi y Román Piña Chan (tumba 1), y la segunda recientemente, en 2011, por Melchor Cruz y Olga Landa (tumba 2). Actualmente, por medios geofíscos, tenemos la certeza de que hay al menos otras dos en la zona arqueológica.
De las tumbas descubiertas en 1842 sabemos que se extrajeron por lo menos los restos óseos de un individuo, pero como se menciona en la nota, al levantarlos se destruyeron, convirtiéndose en polvo. En la tumba 2 excavada en el año 2011 se encontró únicamente un personaje cuya edad oscila posiblemente entre 25 y 30 años, el cual se encontró colocado sobre un pavimento hecho de lajas.
Completamente distinto es el caso de la tumba 1, en la cual se descubrió gran cantidad de restos óseos diseminados por toda la tumba. Se pudieron identificar 15 esqueletos completos y se concluyó, por los restos encontrados, que en dicha cámara fueron enterrados entre 50 y 124 individuos. De estos se pudo determinar que 108 fueron adultos (59 masculinos, 47 femeninos y 2 indeterminados), 8 jóvenes y 8 infantes. En la tumba 1, la más rica en ofrendas, se descubrieron más de una centena de piezas completas y miles de cuentas pendientes de piedra y concha.
Si bien es poco lo sabemos aún de esta gran ciudad, que abarcó más de 100 hectáreas en su momento de esplendor, las excavaciones que se han reactivado en la última década nos están permitiendo conocer muchos más datos de esta población que, sin lugar a dudas, fue una de las más importantes de los periodos Clásico y Epiclásico en Michoacán.
Translation - English The Tingambato archeological site is one of the few in Michoacán to have been excavated extensively. However, we still know very little about it. Only recently have we been able to date it more accurately through controlled stratigraphic excavations and radiocarbon dating, which place it at between 450 and 700 AD.
Based on this timeline, we now believe that the oft-cited presence of talud-tablero decoration influenced by Teotihuacan must have occurred in Tingambato after the collapse of that city in 575 AD (as shown by the most recent studies). We must therefore discount the idea that it is a trait directly inherited from Teotihuacan as had originally been supposed, but is rather an echo of said metropolis. However, we do have data indicating simultaneous occupation of Tingambato and Teotihuacan, although there is as yet no archeological material that could link them.
Of note among its main buildings are two quadrangular-based pyramid bases, which are stepped with sloping walls, one great platform leveling the entire archeological site, plazas, sunken courtyards, altars and rooms arranged around the courtyards.
Another significant element worth mentioning as regards Tingambato is the presence of the I-shaped sunken ball court with marker rings. This is an architectural feature appearing in 650-900 AD and is one of the most valuable to have been found in the west of Mexico, which reflects the importance of this city.
As we know, Michoacán has a longstanding tradition of tomb construction and complex treatment of the dead. At Tingambato, we have found significant examples of chambers constructed underground that were used for depositing their dead accompanied by rich offerings. Its funerary architecture is undoubtedly one of the aspects that has most drawn attention to the site of Tingambato, as well as the offerings it contains.
The first news we have of these tombs is in the newspaper La Voz de Michoacán on May 26, 1842, which reports the finding of three tombs aligned from south to north, apparently contiguously, at a distance of approximately half a mile from the town. Another two tombs have been excavated at the Tingambato site. The first was discovered on March 8, 1979, by archeologists Kuniaki Ohi and Román Piña Chan (tomb 1), and the second more recently, in 2011, by Melchor Cruz and Olga Landa (tomb 2). Thanks to geophysical methods, we are currently certain that there are at least another two in the archeological zone.
We know that the bones of at least one individual were extracted from the tombs discovered in 1842. However, the article states that they were destroyed, turning into dust when removed. Only one person was found in tomb 2, excavated in 2011. This person could have been aged between 25 and 30, and was found on a platform made of slate.
Tomb 1 is a completely different case, in which a large number of bones were discovered scattered throughout the tomb. 15 complete skeletons could be identified. Based on the remains found, we conclude that between 50 and 124 individuals had been buried in this chamber. Of these, we could determine that 108 were adults (59 males, 47 females and 2 undetermined), 8 were children and 8 were infants. Tomb 1 was the richest in offerings, as more than a hundred complete pieces and thousands of stone and shell beads were discovered.
Although we still know little about this great city, which covered more than 247 acres at the height of its splendor, excavations performed over the past decade have allowed us to gather more data on this settlement, which was undoubtedly one of the most important ones in Michoacán during the Classic and Epiclassic periods.
