I came across an ethical question in the NAATI preparation, and it's shown below.
After translating someone's medical history you still have the draft of your translation and a copy of the source document. What will you do with these pages?

由于是有关人家的健康信息，所以翻译完以后应该如何处理这些个人信息，关乎保护个人隐私 privacy，是一个道德伦理问题。正如 Xinyuan 所说，应该予以删除（在一定时间之后），并加以保密，不向任何人泄露。

I think it is more than a question of confidentiality. It is also a matter of data protection, respect of individual's privacy and handle of personal data when you work as a translator or interpreter. At least it is in the U.K. context. Not sure Australia because we have data protection legislation here we have to follow. I think you can keep the original document for a certain period of time such as when your job was done and paid at least just in case your translation will require a review for some reasons. When keeping it you make sure it is kept in a strictly confidential place, a safe place (preferably a locked cabinet, or folder). To use it for your sample in the future, you could redact the personal details so that the whole document does not show any personal names, age, address etc. Actually on the safe side, it is better to destroy it (shred it) after you copied some parts (not personal details of course) to another document just for sample purpose.

| So does it mean that when I answer this question during a NAATI exam, the principle that I should apply to is only Confidentiality? Besides, can I just delete the copy of the original document? In terms of the translated text, can I simply keep that in strictest confidence instead of deleting it? Because I think maybe the translated text can be a potential reference for my future translation if I undertake similar medical assignments. |
