The relationship between the two systems is complex. Energy and oil intensities of GDP vary over time and across countries depending on energy endowments, levels of economic development, the structure of GDP, as well as various other aspects ranging from lifestyles to geographical and climatic factors, to energy and environmental policies and to technological advances and breakthroughs in the production, transport adn consumption of different energy carriers. Moreover, the relative energy prices resulting from the interplay of some of the above factors has a determining role in shaping the choices made by energy producers and consumers.
