I am looking for a synonym for "soap factory" that would sound a bit old-fashioned. I know there is a word soapworks (google gives a billion hits), but it is mainly used in company names. Can one say, for example, that soap is produced in a soapworks?

soap-house / soap-works

Are two versions given by OED for 'a place where soap is manufactured', and both of them sound sufficiently old-fashioned to my UK ears.

Note that the more pompous-sounding terms often survived in proper names, presumably because they sounded more grand and impressive; so lots of the words still retained in proper names already do have a slightly quaint or old-fashioned air about them, a fact that is often capitlaized on by modern companies searching for comfortable, traditional-sounding names.

I made that term up; or so I thought. Until I looked it up on Google, and found:
