: or just a small glass case. the break glass is usually for fire extinguishers or axes, not just to get a key. /really? any glass can be broken in theory. I agree with phil- not necessarily break glass at all.

The "gardien" may have a key to open the box, others will break the glass in case of emergency

"verre dormant" means that it does not normally open: this is the contrary of "ouvrant" for a window or door for example, most "break glass" cabinets also have a lock that can open with a key, in French like in English

: I think that's highly unlikely, D! For emergency access, it would be helpful to see which key to grab — and no real reason to obscure them; I feel sure this is about a 'fixed' pane of glass not readily opened, but can be in an emergency — even broken!

Could be Tony. That's the usual setup, but I haven't come across "verre tombant" in that context.

Discussion
Possibly a safer solution might be to use 'cabinet', leaving its actual form a little more non-committal.
Je ne crois pas à la traduction "opaque" qui convient dans d'autres cas, Dicobat dit "dead light" mais c'est dans le sens d'éclairage pouvant être percé dans un mur mitoyen avec l'accord du propriétaire et ça ne semble pas convenir
