Even after a Google-search, I have no idea what "Apl." stands for. One site gives "full professor" in ( ) after the term.
I'm interested not only in a translation, but a definition.

I was once an adjunct professor at a college in Oklahoma. An adjunct professor is a part-time instructor, i.e. not included in the budget for regular faculty.
\"Schließlich kann der Rektor die Urkunde mit der Ernennung zum „außerplanmäßigen Professor“ übergeben. Außerplanmäßig deshalb, weil Steinert weiterhin als Weissenauer Abteilungsleiter in der Patientenversorgung tätig ist, in der Klinik forscht und keinen eigenen Lehrstuhl an der Uni innehat.

O.Prof.‹ (›Ordentlicher Professor‹) ist keine moralische Kategorie, sondern heißt bloß, dass der entsprechende Professor die Ordnung an der Universität entscheidend mitdefiniert. Darum ist das Gegenstück zu ›o.‹ (für ordentlich) auch nicht ›unordentlich‹, sondern ›außerplanmäßig‹ (›apl.‹). Diesen Titel darf nach Genehmigung durch das Ministerium ein Privatdozent führen, wenn er zwölf Semester unterrichtet hat und sich nichts hat zuschulden kommen lassen. Dass ein Professor ›außerplanmäßig‹ ist, bedeutet allerdings nicht, dass er seine Vorlesungen spontan abhält. Wie viel Planung ein Professor in seine Veranstaltungen einfließen lässt, ist wie in allen anderen Fällen auch eine Typfrage.

: Hi Kim, a very late response to add a note of partial disagreement: I agree on "apl", which was Asker's main concern, but as I understand it an "adjunct professor" has paid teaching duties - so it's not the same animal as an apl.Prof. in Germany.

I think the term it's already in English.
As you've said, you don't need the translation of "apl. professor", because it's already in English.
