The phrase is in inverted commas in the original ie it's an approximation/coinage/mildly humorous, so maybe the same could work in TL:

You could word your sentence around the expression "to volunteer someone", for example "a sense of being 'volunteered'".

: "forced volunteerism" gets several hundred Googles and seems to be a set phrase. I personally like "coerced volunteerism", but it's much less common.

wasn't press-ganging when officers roamed the streets trying to find 'volunteers' for navy service? If people didn't want to volunteer, they were forced to do so through violent means anyway. Could fit nicely in a more metaphorical way into your sentence here.
