Hungarian term

Apróságokon múlt

Hungarian to English Art/Literary Gaming/Video-games/E-sports

Selected

you lost, but it was close, you lost, but only by a bit, etc.

you lost, but it was close
you lost, but only by a bit
you lost, but only by a little bit
you lost, but only by a narrow margin
you lost, but only by a slim margin

It only depended on a minuscule fact

There is no explanation, it just sounds good. I don't think that there is a definite rule for this expression.
Example sentence:

It only depended on a minuscule fact that you lost.

Almost, but not quite...

The term is short, to the point, conveys your message, is not slang, and is appropriate for this type of use.
