good connections

It's as though the two are connected by a broad pipeline (think oil/gas, although the image is also used in computing; see links). The pipeline implies influence, although it's often used in a one-way sense (e.g. I have good connections which will enable me to obtain funding from XYZ).

"connections" in the plural of course implies コネ (in the sense of personal contacts, as opposed to "a connection" which merely implies 関係). The plural form would often be followed by "at" rather than "with" (i.e. I have a strong connection with Japan, but good connections at the local government office)

pull

A have a lot of pull with Dept. of B
Peer comment(s):

agree Nobuo Kameyama : Suppose Company A and B are Japanese companies, I may prefer "pull," "influence" or "personal contacts" to “connection” because of the mentality of the Japanese people who work for these companies. Example: Company A has strong influence over Company B.
