Spanish term

afectando al registro arqueológico

Spanish to English Other Archaeology Text from the Canary Islands

I'm having trouble understanding this text. I have a first attempt at translation but I'm not sure I'm understanding what the author is trying to say. This is what I have:

There appears to be a growing trend of enthusiasts organising individual or group visits and some of these are associated with unregulated internet advertising campaigns. This affects archaeological records and causes false messages to be disseminated about heritage. In some cases, rituals are carried out in sensitive parts of certain sites.

Any help would be much appreciated. TIA.

damaging the archaeological record

"El registro arqueológico" is called "the archaeological record" (singular) in English. It is a core concept in archaeology. It doesn't refer to a written record of excavations or objects recovered, but to the physical evidence of archaeological remains in situ. In the archaeological record, the position of objects within the ground is itself evidence. This is referring to the fact that when amateurs start digging, even if they don't steal anything, they destroy evidence merely by disturbing the site without following proper procedures.

"The archaeological record is the body of physical (not written) evidence about the past. It is one of the core concepts in archaeology,"

"Afectar" can mean "affect", of course, but that is too weak a translation here, where the meaning is:

"5. tr. Menoscabar, perjudicar, influir desfavorablemente."

"Quick removal of the surface soil will not damage the archaeological record."

"For those who are selling items illegally, this partnership means we have in place a process to stop listings and take action against the individuals concerned. Doing so is vital because such activity is not only illegal but could also damage the archaeological record as, without effective reporting, valuable insights into our past could be lost forever."

affecting the archaeological register

All the decent references I've found are books. An archaeological register is similar to a journal or database that contains all the available information about archaeological sites.

Archaeological Register
By James Packer

Purpose

For centuries, chance discoveries of the remains of the Theater of Pompey have been made in and around the Pio Palace. Virtually all these discoveries have been lost, and I have, therefore, prepared a catalogue that includes the written references (published and unpublished) that cite and describe these discoveries. From these entries, future students of the Theater of Pompey may gain a fairly accurate idea of the types, measurements, and marbles that once made up the fabric of the Theater. In most cases, the original description of the fragment is given in as complete a form as possible, and the entries below are arranged according to architectural type: bases, shafts (by material and size), capitals (Corinthian, Corinthianizing, Ionic), architraves, friezes, architrave/friezes, cornices, entablatures, archivolts, transennas, pavements, inscriptions, sculpture, walls and piers, stairs/seats, miscellaneous objects, the Hecatostylum, streets, the Forma Urbis, the Temple of Venus Victrix, the scaenae frons, colonnades, and construction.

Thank you, Patricia :-)
neutral philgoddard : I don't think "affecting" makes sense. Could it mean altering?

I understood it to mean 'having an effect on', though I wasn't sure how visitors could have an effect on the 'register', hence my relatively low confidence level.
