English to Italian: J.R.R. TOLKIEN, On ‘The Kalevala’ or Land of Heroes, my translation for the Italian publisher Bompiani
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English
Wonder and a little bewilderment were at any rate my experience when I fi rst came upon the Kalevala – crossed, that is, the gulf between the Indo-european-speaking peoples of Europe into the smaller realm of those who still cling in queer corners to half-forgotten tongues and memories of an elder day. The newness worried me, sticking in awkward lumps through the clumsiness of a
translation that had not overcome all the peculiar diffi culties
of its task; it irritated while it attracted – but the more I read of it, the more I felt at home and enjoyed myself.
Then I made a wild assault on the original language, and was at fi rst repulsed with heavy losses, and can never be said to have taken the position. Still it is easy to see why translations are not very good, or very near to their original – they are dealing with a language separated by an im measurable gulf in nature and in method of expression from English. Finnish is an odd tongue, very fi tting to the ‘Land of Heroes’ (as is natural), and as diff erent from anything that you are familiar with as the tales of these poems are
from the tales you knew before.

Bio

Hello,

I'm Stefania, an Italian translator specialising in creative fields and DTP with Adobe Indesign.

I'm based in a tiny medieval village in Tuscany. From there, I have been working in the translation industry for 9 years. Here are some of the jobs I did:

- Localisation of huge UK-based e-commerce specialized in party supplies. From 2017 to 2020 I took care of this client daily, translating new items, localizing the newsletters, analysing the best-performing keywords, and giving marketing advice based on my experience of the Italian market.

- Translation of Spanish American novels from renowned writers like Mario Benedetti, Sergio Pitol, Leonardo Padura, Hernán Ronsino etc. I translated essays from English-speaking writers, too. Including Tolkien! See my sample section.

- Subtitling of short commercials as well as full-length movies. I can take care of the full process: transcription, time-coding, translation, synchronization, and creation of CC or burnt-in subtitles.

- Interpreter at exclusive wine tastings in wonderful Tuscan villas. (That's fun!)

- Project Manager, Italian Language Master and Co-Chief Production Officer in a translation agency.

- DTP projects in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Keynote, and Sketch.

I'm also a member of AITI, the Italian Association of Translators and Interpreters. You can check my profile here: https://aiti.org/it/profilo/stefania-marinoni
