Every once in a while Google surprises us showing up dressed in a different
way than usual. This happens every time a festive occasion comes up, existing
absolutely delicious logos like for example the grey logo, which has Google's
two OS drawing each other, paying tribute to MC Escher or the logo in which
the second O was replaced by a Hitchcock's silhouette.
These changes operated on the design of the page on festive occasions are an
evidence of the existing complicity between Google and its users. These
variations on the norm, being so unusual, are welcomed and express a subtle
and sagacious spirit of the people that make Google a little more than a
simple search engine.
However, even those that don't have the habit of surfing the web have
certainly come upon decorated websites with holiday motifs: little angels,
Santas, lights or little twinkling lights, candles, holly, chimneys, presents
and a lot of falling snow..
These elements only serve to distract the users and/or frighten them, making
them return to that website by mistake.
The trust that the client has in us its a gift that cannot be wasted. There's
no use in having a site with good products, excelent service if we then
decorate the site as if it was a Christmas Tree.
One must have good sense.Even the usually gloomily Nielsen considers the
festive decorations on the websites acceptable, but with moderation. Nielsen
refers that, as long as well chosen, a reminder of the coming of a festive
occasion creates bonds with the clients and can lead to consumption. An
allusion to Christmas or to Valentine's Day can remind the user that he
needs to buy a gift. What never should happen is wishing a merry Christmas to
your Clients by Carnival time.
Chip7 Website is already reminding us that Christmas is near, notice that
dashing Santa Claus on top of the logo and the snow on the vertical
navigation bar. In this case the decoration works because it's simple, it
doesn't distract and at the same time creates a feeling of familiarity with
the brand.
