Gerade als das kleine Schweinchen mit dem Hausbau fertig war und sich für ein Nickerchen in sein Strohbett legte, kam der große böse Wolf zu dem Haus. Er roch das Schweinchen in dem Haus und ihm lief das Wasser im Mund zusammen. "Mmmmm... Brot mit Speck!"
Also klopfte der Wolf an die Tür des Strohhauses und sagte: “Kleines Schwein! Kleines Schwein! Lass mich herein! Lass mich herein!”
Aber das kleine Schweinchen sah die großen Pfoten des Wolfes durch das Schlüsselloch und antwortete: “Nein! Nein! Nein! Ich lass dich nicht herein!”
Dann zeigte der Wolf seine Zähne und sagte: “Ich werde husten und prusten und dir dein Haus zusammen pusten!”

Unless you’ve stepped out of an underground bunker in your retro 70’s flared dungarees and Mork & Mindy backpack whistling a BeeGees hit, you’ve been surrounded by an increasing level of technology like the rest of us.
From your first VCR, to the communications and entertainment device in your pocket, technology has changed the way we experience the world at large. But each new advancement in technology brings its own set of unique aspects, features, and challenges that we need to navigate.
First… A History Lesson
Let’s take the humble modern telephone. When adopted into mass-market you had to remember a short string of four or five numbers to call your friends and family members. Telephones during this time were all similar. A dialler, a receiver, and the ‘switchhook’. But as the technology grew new features like area codes and special buttons were introduced, forcing the user to adapt to a new way of being.
Move ahead another few decades and the first mobile devices become available commercially, but cost restricted its availability to corporates, large businesses, and the ultra-wealthy.
Consumer adoption of GSM mobile cellular networks brought with it a cascade of manufacturers who were attempting to release advanced device features while positioning to dominate the market.
This introduced new paradigms in the telephony experience, the most visible being a screen and software.
You now had an address book, no need to write down or remember phone numbers, fancy ringtones, and some on the go light entertainment.
The progress hasn’t slowed since. Most of us carry portable computing platforms everyday which would see Alan Turing boggle at their sheer complexity.
A Language Gap
Although we don’t speak in the ones and zeroes our technological companions do, it’s through interstitial layers of interface and inferred meaning that we commune with them.
Just like when learning a second spoken or written language we have to learn to think in a different manner when interacting with a new piece of technology.
Thankfully, like language, how we interact with our devices is iterative by nature.
Language forms in layers over time. From a simple need for shared understanding between two differing groups springs new language. Over time the language develops as the need to communicate widens. Sounds and marks meaning “This object is a spoon” build to form nuanced inferences like “This spoon is made of metal”.
Human-technology interfaces are much the same, albeit much faster to adopt. When picking up a new smartphone a user becomes adept at being able operate its basic functions. First as a phone and text messenger, but rapidly a productivity and entertainment platform. Without any effort a user can identify a button and understands when pressed it will illicit an effect. When the button contains an icon representative of a remembered feature the user comprehends the button press relates to that feature.
This experience is a learned understanding of patterns of design present in modern software.
Millions of hours of research into Human-Computer Interaction has been performed to understand how humans interact with devices and each year this research is further advanced. Combining fields such as computer and behavioral science, cognition, interface and graphic design, and many others serve to develop and curate the interfaces we use every day.
Continued exploration in to the way humans use and interact with technology allows us to build intuitive experiences. With this at the core of interface design the use of devices becomes instinctual and expected rather than bespoke and adhoc.
Elements of Language
In human terms, language exists in many forms.
We often think of language as the written and spoken word, but gestures, body positioning, micro-interactions, haptics (touch), habitual conditioning, and learned response are all important in a language. Layering of these elements helps us communicate our meaning effectively to one another.
In technology, a similar layering of interface occurs.
Think about when you receive a text message. Your phone may make a sound, it most likely vibrates, assuredly it illuminates its screen. Before you’ve even picked up your device the combination of auditory, haptic, and visual stimulus has informed you through persistent habitual conditioning that you’ve received a text message.
When you use a website it’s primarily a visual medium. Colour, shape, and movement combine to provide you with a design you can interpret, and most importantly attach meaning. Sound and interactivity are increasingly used to create richer experiences for the user.
User interfaces utilise habitual conditioning and expected outcome to infer meaning, building upon the prior experience of users aiming to be more intuitive.
It’s through this layered approach that we interact with technology and through understanding and shared meaning allowed us to perform complex tasks.
A Lifetime of Experiences
I’ve just turned 39 so I scrape in right at the end of being in the Gen X generation (but perhaps a little Gen Y) and lucky enough to have been born during the early days of our current technological wave.
I entered the fray with an Amstrad CPC 464 as my first computing experience. Little more than a keyboard, a tape drive, and 64kb of ram in 8-bit glory.
I have fond memories as a child dropping an audio cassette into its tape drive and hitting play. The CPC would play the data as audio as it spooled into the tiny piece of memory counting from 000 to 999 as it went. A sound that was more grating than an old modem dialling into a local ISP. Four minutes later a program would be loaded in all its glory, processor humming along at a blistering 4 MHz.
My family was featured in the local newspaper as we were one of the first to own a home computer in our area. I still remember the grainy black and white photo of my parents and I crowded around the fourteen-inch CRT screen, a wide grin on my face at the possibilities this new technology afforded.
A few years later the poor Amstrad became obsolete and we moved onto the Amiga 500. “It has twice the bits!” I remember the computer store pitch to my parents at a computer users meeting.
With enhanced 16-bit graphics and dedicated sound, the Amiga was a powerhouse. I cut my teeth on my first computing language AmigaDOS. I loved it. Everything felt a little mystical when I entered in a string of arcane codes with meaning I was yet to grasp and watched the computer that was more friend than machine react. Hell I could even 3D model on that beast!
I had some damn good times with that Amiga 500. It still holds a special place in my heart.
When high school came around it was time to let go of the Amiga and move into a PC clone. An Intel 486sx-25, 4MB of RAM and a 120MB hard drive.
Barely awake by today’s computing standards.
I remember I could choose to either have Windows 3.1 and some small applications and games, or wipe it all and install the blockbuster hit MechWarrior 2.
You can imagine which won out…
Over the next decade or so I built and rebuilt my machine many times, upgraded it with more RAM and expanded its capability. During this time I learned to code in simple DOS Batch language, and could custom modify my system.
Without going any further, you can probably see where I’m going here. I’ve had a life time of experiences to build up my proficiencies in the language of technology. To me technology is second nature. With the knowledge I’ve gained I can approach any technology with a “lets see what this thing can really do” attitude.
My pathway isn’t unique, and though I’ve had more in-depth experiences, what differs me from another boils down to one simple thing.
The Benefit of Exposure
Much like when being exposed to a new language when young, being suckled at the teat of the digital world provides a significant leg up to approach technology without fear and trepidation.
For the older generations of our parents and grandparents, digital technology has been a bolt on experience. Without early exposure, the building blocks of understanding aren’t as easily formed among these age groups. That isn’t to say they can’t acquire an understanding or the knowledge required, only that the difficulty curve is much higher.
Just like learning German in your thirties.
When learning a language, you’ll grasp simple words and phrases. The word for spoon (Löffel), how to count to five (eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf), how to order a coffee (Ich hätte gerne einen Kaffee, bitte). But the need to derive a further understanding of the language becomes apparent when you’d like to ask a question or attempt more complex phrasing.
So the next time a person of an older generation asks how to post a selfie on Facebook and you roll your eyes, remember that its likely they haven’t had the same experience of technology that you’ve natively grown with from an early age.
Because you know technology is your second language.

A menos que você tenha saído de um bunker subterrâneo em seus jeans retrô dos anos 70 e mochila Mork & Mindy assobiando uma música dos Bee Gees, você foi cercado por um nível crescente de tecnologia como o resto de nós.
Desde o seu primeiro videocassete até o dispositivo de comunicação e entretenimento em seu bolso, a tecnologia mudou a forma como vivenciamos o mundo como um todo. Mas cada novo avanço na tecnologia traz seu próprio conjunto de aspectos, características e desafios únicos que precisamos navegar.
Primeiro... Uma lição de história
Vamos pegar o humilde telefone moderno. Quando adotado no mercado em massa, você precisava se lembrar de uma pequena sequência de quatro ou cinco números para ligar para seus amigos e familiares. Os telefones durante esse período eram todos semelhantes. Um discador, um receptor e o “gancho”. Mas à medida que a tecnologia cresceu, novos recursos como códigos de área e botões especiais foram introduzidos, forçando o usuário a se adaptar a um novo jeito de ser.
Avance algumas décadas e os primeiros dispositivos móveis se tornam disponíveis comercialmente, mas o custo restringiu sua disponibilidade para corporações, grandes empresas e os ultra-ricos.
A adoção pelo consumidor de redes celulares GSM trouxe consigo uma cascata de fabricantes que tentavam liberar recursos avançados nos dispositivos enquanto se posicionavam para dominar o mercado.
Isso introduziu novos paradigmas na experiência de telefonia, sendo uma tela e um software os mais visíveis.
Agora você tinha um catálogo de contatos, sem necessidade de escrever ou lembrar números de telefone, toques extravagantes e alguns para entretenimento.
O progresso não diminuiu desde então. A maioria de nós carrega plataformas de computação portáteis todos os dias, o que faria Alan Turing surpreender-se com sua enorme complexidade.
Uma lacuna de linguagem
Embora não falemos em uns e zeros como nossos companheiros tecnológicos fazem, é através de camadas intersticiais de interface e determinado significado que nós nos comunicamos com eles.
Assim como quando aprendemos uma segunda língua falada ou escrita, temos que aprender a pensar de maneira diferente ao interagir com um novo item de tecnologia.
Felizmente, como a linguagem, a forma como interagimos com nossos dispositivos é interativa por natureza.
A linguagem é formada em camadas ao longo do tempo. De uma simples necessidade de compreensão compartilhada entre dois grupos diferentes, surge uma nova linguagem. Com o tempo, a linguagem se desenvolve à medida que a necessidade de comunicação se amplia. Sons e notas que significam “Esse objeto é uma colher” são construídos para formar inferências com nuances como “Esta colher é feita de metal”.
As interfaces de tecnologia humana são as mesmas, embora sejam muito mais rápidas de serem adotadas. Ao adquirir um novo smartphone, o usuário se torna apto a operar suas funções básicas. Primeiro como um telefone e mensageiro de texto, mas rapidamente uma plataforma de produtividade e entretenimento. Sem qualquer esforço, um usuário pode identificar um botão e entender que quando pressionado, ele irá gerar um efeito. Quando o botão contém um ícone representativo de um recurso lembrado, o usuário compreende que o pressionamento do botão está relacionado a esse recurso.
Esta experiência é uma compreensão aprendida dos padrões de design presentes no software moderno.
Milhões de horas de pesquisa em Interação Humano-Computador foram realizadas para entender como os humanos interagem com os dispositivos e a cada ano esta pesquisa é mais avançada. A combinação de campos como computação e ciência comportamental, cognição, interface e design gráfico e muitos outros servem para desenvolver e organizar as interfaces que usamos todos os dias.
A exploração contínua da forma de como os humanos usam e interagem com a tecnologia nos permite construir experiências intuitivas. Com isso no centro do design de interface, o uso de dispositivos torna-se instintivo e esperado, em vez de sob medida e adhoc.
Elementos da linguagem
Em termos humanos, a linguagem existe em muitas formas.
Muitas vezes pensamos na linguagem como a palavra escrita e falada, mas os gestos, o posicionamento do corpo, as microinterações, o háptico (toque), o condicionamento habitual e a resposta aprendida são todos importantes em uma linguagem. A sobreposição desses elementos nos ajuda a comunicar efetivamente nosso significado uns aos outros.
Na tecnologia, uma camada semelhante de interface ocorre.
Pense em quando você recebe uma mensagem de texto. Seu telefone pode emitir um som, ele provavelmente vibra, certamente ilumina a tela. Antes mesmo de você pegar o dispositivo, a combinação de estímulo auditivo, háptico e visual informou a você, por meio do condicionamento habitual persistente, que você recebeu uma mensagem de texto.
Quando você usa um site, é principalmente um meio visual. Cor, forma e movimento combinam-se para fornecer a você um design que você pode interpretar e, o mais importante, atribuir significado. O som e a interatividade são cada vez mais usados para criar experiências mais ricas para o usuário.
As interfaces de usuário utilizam o condicionamento habitual e o resultado esperado para inferir o significado, baseando-se na experiência anterior dos usuários, almejando ser mais intuitivos.
É através desta abordagem em camadas que interagimos com a tecnologia e a compreensão e o significado compartilhado nos permitiu realizar tarefas complexas.
Uma vida de experiências
Fiz 39 anos recentemente, então acabei ficando no final da geração X (mas talvez um pouco na geração Y) e tive a sorte de ter nascido nos primeiros dias de nossa atual onda tecnológica.
Entrei na briga com um Amstrad CPC 464 como minha primeira experiência de computação. Pouco mais que um teclado, uma unidade de fita e 64KB de RAM na glória de 8 bits.
Tenho boas lembranças quando criança de colocar uma fita de áudio em sua unidade de fita e iniciar a reprodução. O CPC reproduzia os dados como áudio enquanto transferia para a minúscula memória contando de 000 a 999. Um som que era mais irritante do que um modem antigo discando para um provedor de acesso à internet local. Quatro minutos depois, um programa seria carregado em todo o seu esplendor, com o processador zunindo a 4 MHz.
Como fomos um dos primeiros da nossa área a possuir um computador em casa, minha família foi destaque no jornal local. Eu ainda me lembro da foto granulada em preto e branco dos meus pais e eu amontoados ao redor da tela CRT de catorze polegadas, um largo sorriso no meu rosto diante das possibilidades que essa nova tecnologia oferecia.
Alguns anos mais tarde, o pobre Amstrad tornou-se obsoleto e passamos para o Amiga 500. “Tem o dobro de bits!”
Com gráficos aprimorados de 16 bits e som dedicado, o Amiga era uma potência. Minha primeira linguagem de computação foi AmigaDOS. Eu amei. Tudo parecia um pouco místico quando entrei em uma série de códigos arcanos significativos que eu ainda estava por entender e observei o computador, que era mais amigo do que máquina, reagir. Caramba! Eu poderia até mesmo modelar em 3D naquela fera!
Eu tive alguns bons momentos com o Amiga 500. Ele ainda tem um lugar especial no meu coração.
Quando o colegial chegou, era hora de deixar o Amiga e mudar para um clone de PC. Um Intel 486sx-25, 4 MB de RAM e um disco rígido de 120 MB.
Dificilmente estimulante pelos padrões de computação de hoje.
Eu lembro que poderia optar por ter o Windows 3.1 e alguns pequenos aplicativos e jogos, ou limpar tudo e instalar o espetacular MechWarrior 2.
Você pode imaginar qual ganhou... (MechWarrior 2 tem uma incrível trilha sonora, por sinal)
Durante a década seguinte, construí e reconstruí minha máquina muitas vezes, atualizei-a com mais RAM e ampliei sua capacidade. Durante esse tempo, aprendi a codificar na simples linguagem batch DOS e personalizar meu sistema.
Sem ir mais longe, você provavelmente pode ver onde estou indo aqui. Eu tive uma vida de experiências para desenvolver minhas proficiências na linguagem da tecnologia. Para mim, tecnologia é uma segunda natureza. Com o conhecimento que adquiri, posso abordar qualquer tecnologia com uma atitude “vamos ver o que essa coisa realmente pode fazer”.
Meu caminho não é único, e apesar de ter tido experiências mais profundas, o que me diferencia de outros se resume a uma coisa simples.
O benefício da exposição
Bem como quando ser exposto a uma nova linguagem quando jovem, ser amamentado no mundo digital proporciona uma vantagem significativa para abordar a tecnologia sem medo e receio.
Para as gerações mais velhas de nossos pais e avós, a tecnologia tem sido um acréscimo na experiência. Sem a exposição precoce, os blocos de construção do entendimento não são facilmente formados entre esses grupos etários. Isso não quer dizer que eles não possam adquirir um entendimento ou conhecimento necessário, apenas que a curva de dificuldade é muito maior.
Assim como aprender alemão nos seus trinta anos.
Ao aprender uma língua, você vai aprender palavras e frases simples. A palavra para colher (Löffel), como contar até cinco (ein, zwei, drei, vier, fünf), como pedir um café (Ich hätte gerne einen Kaffee, bitte). Mas a necessidade de obter mais compreensão da linguagem se torna aparente quando você gostaria de fazer uma pergunta ou tentar uma redação mais complexa.
Então, da próxima vez que uma pessoa de uma geração mais velha perguntar como publicar uma selfie no Facebook e você revirar os olhos, lembre-se de que é provável que eles não tenham tido a mesma experiência de tecnologia com a qual você cresceu desde cedo.
Porque você sabe que a tecnologia é a sua segunda língua.
