Source text - Romanian - Cine este María Isabel? a spus ducele, întorcându-și privirea către preotul Rafael.
Preotul a făcut un pas în spate, terifiat, apropiindu-se de ușa de la intrare. Părea că vrea să fugă.
- Cine este María Isabel? a repetat întrebarea.
Fâstâceala tânărului cavaler l-a făcut pe bunicul lui să bănuiască ceva. Deja întregul tablou începea să se creioneze în mintea inchizitorului de rangul întâi.
- Poți să ne spui ceva despre această María Isabel?
- Vă implor, Domnia Voastră, să mă cruțați, l-a rugat cocoșat preotul.
- Bine, deci aici este marele secret, a spus el, întorcându-se către nepotul lui. Tu nu ești supus niciunui jurământ, așa că îmi poți răspunde la toate întrebările. Cine este María Isabel?
- Este iubita mea, a spus cu oarecare reținere viteazul cavaler, neavând curaj să-și privească bunicul în ochi.
- Bun, am lămurit un aspect. Oare chiar așa trebuie să vă trag pe toți de limbă? Deci ăsta e motivul pentru care te-ai luptat cu garda regală a marelui inchizitor Miguel de Aragón.
Translation - English “Who is María Isabel?” the duke asked, turning his gaze on Father Rafael.
The priest took a step back, terrified, sidling closer to the entrance door. He looked ready to bolt.
“Who is María Isabel?” he asked again.
The young knight’s uneasiness raised warning flags for his grandfather. The whole picture was already beginning to take shape in the mind of the Inquisitor of First Rank.
“Can you tell us something about this María Isabel?”
“I beg of you, your lordship, spare me,” the priest asked, bent over.
“Alright, so there’s our great secret,” he said, turning to his grandson. “You aren’t under any oath yourself, so you can answer all my questions. Who is María Isabel?”
“She’s my lover,” the young knight answered, not daring to look his grandfather in the eye.
“There we go, we’ve shed some light on one aspect. Need I drag everything out of everyone? So that’s what’s brought you to cross steel with the royal guard of Grand Inquisitor Miguel of Aragón.”

Bio
My background is as a programmer and researcher in Computational Fluid Dynamics. I have completed a PhD and a postdoctoral project in this field, both in Ireland. Despite my career's focus on science, I have always enjoyed translating: my first work was the translation into Romanian of Douglas N. Adams's novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I finished that translation out of pure passion for the book at around age 16, but never considered trying to publish it seriously enough. And, to my eternal chagrin, an official translation showed up on bookshelves a few years after I had finished my own!
Recently I've gone through a wholehearted career refocus towards translation. In 2020 I obtained a Translator Certificate from the Romanian Ministry of Culture's National Institute for Cultural Research and Training. I passed the respective national exams with high marks, in roughly the top 10% of the candidates of that semester. I am now enthusiastically working on not letting any challenges or opportunities get away!
