Ø How did you two meet and become partners for the series?
Mike: On safari a few years ago I met Mark around the campfire. We talked and I soon realized he was a lonely, lost soul and so took it upon myself to lighten up his life. Of course, I didn’t expect him to hang onto my apron strings forever!
Mark: I had been working on my own in Botswana for some years and one evening met Mike around a campfire. At the time I was studying paleo-anthropology and so was fascinated by this person who is so like the missing link.
Ø How did you learn to get so close to wild animals?
Mike: By watching and studying animal behaviour, body language control and good karma and spiritual communication.
Mark: Working with wild animals, you get to know their behaviour well and develop a sixth sense as to how relaxed or irritable they are. We obviously don’t like to stress the wildlife we come across and always respect their boundaries.

Mike: “Qualche anno fa in un safari incontrai Mark attorno al falò del campo. Ci mettemmo a parlare e subito compresi quale animo solitario e bisognoso di guida fosse Mark. Di sicuro non mi aspettavo che si attaccasse alle mie sottane per sempre!”
Mark: “Lavoravo in Botswana da solo già da qualche anno e una sera incontrai Mike attorno al falò del campo. A quel tempo studiavo paleoantropologia, perciò rimasi affascinato da quell’individuo così simile all’anello mancante”.
Ø Come avete imparato a spingervi così vicini agli animali selvatici?
Mike: “Osservando e studiando il comportamento animale, controllando il linguaggio dei nostri corpi, con un buon karma e comunicazione spirituale con gli animali”.
Mark: “Lavorando con gli animali selvatici si impara a conoscere il loro comportamento e a sviluppare un sesto senso nel carpire il loro livello di irritabilità. Naturalmente non vogliamo causare loro alcun tipo di stress e ci assicuriamo sempre di rispettare i confini”.

When discussing the foreign-policy orientation of French leaders, it is always tempting to distinguish between Gaullists and Atlanticists. Depending on which side of the debate – and the ocean – one is on, each label can be used to praise or vilify. The problem, of course, is that reality is much more about shades of grey, and if the neat division makes for great headlines, it does not provide for sound analysis.
Nicolas Sarkozy is a case in point. While he has been described, and has described himself, as an Atlanticist, there’s a good case to be made that he’s actually a Gaullist. Not only does this ambiguity show the inherent limits of using labels, it also has a direct impact on the future of French policy vis-à-vis the EU, the United States and the world.
A case of mistaken identity
Sarkozy’s personal style is definitely not Gaullist. His taste for publicrelations stunts and constant media exposure, including of his personal life, stand in strong contrast with de Gaulle’s discretion and modesty. And while the General imposed a unified voice on French foreign policy (his own), Sarkozy’s reliance on diplomatic backchannels have sometimes brought confusion to the decision-making process.
Many of his beliefs, however, can be described as Gaullist. Like the General, Sarkozy is a pragmatist at heart. Also consistent with the post-de Gaulle consensus, he sees the EU as a ‘reincarnation’ for France, and envisions ‘a multipolar world in which the European Union could progressively come to be one of the most active poles’. In other words, he believes that the EU should be not just a peaceful trading bloc, but a power in world affairs.

A proposito dell’orientamento in politica estera dei leader francesi, si è sempre tentati di distinguere tra Gollisti ed Atlantisti. Ciascuna delle due posizioni può essere strumentalizzata per lodare o denigrare, a seconda che ci trovi da una parte del dibattito (e dell’oceano) o dall’altra. Naturalmente, il problema è che la realtà è fatta di toni diversi di grigio e, se la divisione netta fa notizia, non fornisce però un’analisi realistica.
Nicolas Sarkozy è un caso a sé. Descritto da altri e per sua stessa ammissione un Atlantista, c’è ragione di credere che sia in realtà un Gollista. Tale ambiguità non solo evidenzia le limitazioni insite dell’utilizzo di etichette politiche ma influisce anche direttamente sul futuro della politica francese, nei confronti dell’Unione Europea, degli Stati Uniti e del resto del mondo.
Un caso di errore di persona
Lo stile personale di Sarkozy non si può definire Gollista. Il suo gusto per le ostentazioni nelle relazioni pubbliche e la costante esposizione mediatica, anche della sua vita privata, è in aperto contrasto con la discrezione e la modestia tipiche di de Gaulle. Inoltre, se il Generale seppe imporre un linea unica (la sua) in politica estera, la scelta di Sarkozy di affidarsi a vie diplomatiche riservate ha talvolta generato confusione nei processi decisionali.
Tuttavia, molte delle sue convinzioni possono essere considerate Golliste: come il Generale, infatti, Sarkozy ha un carattere pragmatico. Coerente con il consenso post-gollista, il presidente vede inoltre nell’Unione Europea una “reincarnazione” della Francia ed immagina “un mondo multipolare nel quale l’Unione Europea possa progressivamente diventare uno dei poli più attivi”. Democrats getting jittery about the alienating effects of the endless soap opera they call their campaign should buck up. These “hand-wringers,” as the Hillary strategist Harold Ickes calls them, are not seeing the larger picture.
Hillary is cruelly misunderstood, and she deserves more credit for her benevolence. Not only does she have a lot in common with Rocky, as she said Tuesday in Philadelphia, but she has a lot in common with another famous character — the Marschallin in Strauss’s bittersweet comic opera “Der Rosenkavalier.”
The Marschallin is a princess married to a Viennese field marshal who has a liaison dangereuse with a younger man, Count Octavian. Though she’s worried about her fleeting youth and the fickleness of men, she instructs the young man on the ways of love and then gracefully sets him free, allowing him to find happiness with young Sophie as a soaring waltz plays.
Whether or not she wins, Hillary has already given noble service as a sophisticated political tutor for Obama, providing her younger colleague with much-needed seasoning. Who else was going to toughen him up? Howard Dean? John Edwards? Dennis Kucinich?
Obama had not been hit hard until this campaign; he sailed through his Senate race. Without Hillary, he never would have learned to be a good debater. He never would have understood how to robustly answer distorted and personal attacks. He never would have been warned about how harmful an unplugged spouse can be. He never would have realized how a luminous speech can be effective damage control.

Che esca vincitrice o meno dalla campagna, Hillary ha già reso un grande e nobile servizio ad Obama come raffinata istitutrice politica, fornendo al giovane collega l’esperienza di cui tanto aveva bisogno. Chi altri avrebbe potuto rafforzarlo? Howard Dean? John Edwards? Dennis Kucinich?
Prima di questa campagna, Obama non aveva subito alcun duro colpo, superando indenne la sua corsa al Senato. Senza i confronti con Hillary, non avrebbe mai appreso l’arte del dibattito; non avrebbe mai capito come rispondere con decisione agli attacchi personali ed alla manipolazione dei fatti. Si può parlare, scrivere, trovare le parole per dire della pittura di Raffaele Rossi?
Forse in parte sì, a patto che si tenga conto delle categorie della parzialità e della possibilità: può darsi infatti che quanto viene colto corrisponda a quanto Rossi intende comunicare, ma certamente si avverte subito che ciò che emerge è solo una traccia, un segno, perché si intuisce che le immagini affioranti hanno una loro storia, delle nascoste espansioni, degli ignoti percorsi che il pittore volutamente mantiene segreti, lasciando a noi il rischio di cercare di esplorarli dipanando i loro complessi significati.
Insomma, non è certo questo il regno della pura visibilità.
A prima vista si potrebbe anzi affermare che ci si trova di fronte a esiti riconducibili all’ormai consolidato e addirittura abituale repertorio simbolista.
In realtà occorre subito dire che la fenomenologia e la logica della pittura aniconica, specie nelle sue multiformi modulazioni gestuali e nelle molteplici declinazioni materiche non sono passate invano, ma sono state filtrate e decantate nel dipingere di Rossi, contribuendo a semplificarlo, depurandolo delle molte inflessioni ornamentali ed esornative che sovente hanno finito coll’appesantire molte espressioni simbolistiche tradizionali.
Tale purificazione fa sì che ogni elemento individuabile nell’opera venga acquistando un particolare valore.
I diversi formati del quadro, ad esempio.
Basta una forma leggermente cuspidata a ricordare antiche lastre di pietra: forse ritornanti testimonianze di culture dimenticate.
Oppure è sufficiente la creazione di un incavo, di una piccola nicchia a conferire all’opera funzioni sacrali, quasi a costituire un laico tabernacolo di magici culti dell’auspicio e del ricordo.
Talvolta più ampie superfici si incurvano, come ad accogliere fisicamente e abbracciare lo sguardo e l’animo dei fruitori, coinvolgendoli quasi nell’opera.
Su questa linea - come è recentemente accaduto per una dimora nelle isole Baleari – Rossi dà talora anche estensione ambientale alla sua pittura, creando spazi raccolti, luoghi di luce e di distacco dalle molteplici cure e preoccupazioni, per poter riflettere e meditare sul senso dell’esistenza.
In ogni caso l’opera intende sempre diventare il luogo di coagulo alchemico di diverse energie, fisiche e spirituali.
Sovente i quadri di Rossi sono infatti contornati da sottili lamine di rame, ma anche il piombo variamente inciso, lavorato a sbalzo, entra spesso nell’opera a indicare forse, con la sua pesantezza e opacità, le limitazioni individuali che dobbiamo cercare di superare, il punto più basso da cui però può partire una evoluzione trasformatrice, mentre il più raro impiego dell’argento può probabilmente alludere a un desiderio di luminosa purezza.
Ma al di là delle specifiche componenti e dei singoli aspetti, sono le modalità dell’atto creativo nel suo complesso a divenire fondamentali veicoli di significato.
La sua sapienza di pittore consente infatti a Rossi di approntare con lo smaliziato uso delle colle, delle sabbie, dei pigmenti e dei colori a olio una superficie viva, capiente, ospitale, in grado di accogliere multiformi apparizioni.
Se all’inizio è l’artefice a dominare, predisponendo le successive fasi del lavoro - la preparazione, il rito delle diverse stesure - arriva però il momento magico in cui la volontà sembra come venir meno ed è l’immagine a dominare, richiedendo semplicemente al pittore l’ausilio necessario all’apparire.
Ciò che colpisce immediatamente è come tali superfici, pur senza alcun massimalismo, alcuna puritana rigidità, tendano al monocromo: a grandi, illimiti estensioni di blu, di rosso, di caldo ocra, di bianco latteo o alabastrino.
Ci si affaccia così, fin dall’inizio, a una dimensione ulteriore, vergine e misteriosa, per molti aspetti ultrasensibile e assoluta rispetto all’accumularsi puramente fenomenico delle immagini usuali e quotidiane.
Eppure la volontà di meditare, di andar oltre le apparenze non è mai totale e riflessi della vita e delle immagini a tutti note premono sulla superficie.
E’ in questo orizzonte che, quasi per un’intima ricchezza vanno tuttavia emergendo talune tracce figurali: fertili, debordanti modelli semantici, ovviamente, non rappresentazioni mimetiche.
E’ sovente un misterioso cavaliere a fare la sua apparizione.
Rossi dice che è un cavaliere buono, un vincitore.
E’ l’unica spiegazione offerta dal pittore, quant’altri mai parco di parole.
Ma può darsi un vincitore senza sconfitti?
Forse sì: un gruppo di persone sincere e preparate, non intaccate dal cancro del potere, può riconoscere chi tra loro manifesti una evidente superiorità.
Ma è questa una situazione abituale, o anche solo verificabile nel nostro mondo?
E’ chiaro che tali gruppi di personalità eccellenti non sono facili da incontrare.
E’ forse a loro che si rivolge la pittura di Rossi? O, più probabilmente proprio a noi, invitandoci tutti a diventare migliori, a superare i nostri asti, le nostre ripicche, a impegnarci in percorsi di positiva emulazione?
Forse che i cavalieri di Rossi potrebbero non mantenere la parola data? O tradire un’amicizia?.
Mi accorgo che, stranamente quanto vado cercando di scrivere è contrappuntato da continue domande, in verità tutt’altro che retoriche.
In diversi altri dipinti, ad apparire è invece l’inconfondibile sagoma della barca: il simbolo - presente in tutte le civiltà - della traversata dei vivi e dei morti, compiuta alla ricerca dei talismani della sapienza e della saggezza, strumento per eccellenza di passaggio, superando gli infiniti pericoli, evitando gli scogli, i gorghi e i nemici che tentano di ostacolare il transito verso la luce di nuove albe, di nuovi inizi.
Ma il viaggio può essere anche dentro di sé, nel segreto misterioso e insondabile dei propri desideri e delle proprie motivazioni.
In ogni caso Rossi è talmente soggiogato dalla idea della barca, insieme culla e bara, mezzo di trasporto verso gli inferi e veicolo inaffondabile, rifugio sicuro fra le tempeste della vita, da averne creata una in bronzo, lunga oltre tre metri.
Un intero ciclo di opere, poi, Rossi lo ha dedicato ai Dogi: ieratiche figure, personaggi senza volto, insediati su troni instabili dal punto di vista empirico e tuttavia saldi nella loro incisiva presenza nell’immaginario, forse a rappresentare il bisogno di una guida sicura e lungimirante e, più in generale, il senso di un radicamento nel fluire tempestoso della storia.
In altri dipinti, ancor più, apparentemente, nudi e disadorni, sono dei semplici oggetti a popolare la superficie: dei vasi ad esempio, forse contenenti misteriose e segrete energie, vitali tesori spirituali, vasi alchimistici o ermetici naturalmente, tali da costituire il luogo dove sono forse possibili le più impensabili meraviglie, le più mistiche ed essenziali trasmutazioni, consentendo, nel contempo, la restituzione all’io della sua interezza, entro l’universalmente umano.
In diversi altri quadri è invece l’immagine della coppa ad affacciarsi, ricordandoci come da qualche parte sia racchiuso il nostro particolare destino, non senza proporci l’interrogativo sulla inevitabilità della nostra finitezza o sulla possibilità di permanere oltre i limiti del nostro corpo.
Ma la visione del sacro calice può altresì ricondurci alla comune partecipazione all’impegno e al sacrificio.
Non sembra poi un caso che in alcune opere affiori anche la sagoma affusolata del pesce, antico simbolo soteriologico, ma, nel suo inscindibile legame con l’acqua, anche metafora del lavacro purificatore, e, più in generale, allusivo del mondo dell’indistinto, dell’indifferenziato, del sommerso: archetipo di dissoluzione e di integrazione universale, di un ambiente dove vengono cancellati i particolarismi e si espande l’illimitato.
Non si deve tuttavia credere che quello di Raffaele Rossi sia una sorta di linguaggio cifrato per pochi adepti, frutto solo di una sofisticata volontà iniziatica ed elitaria.
Semmai egli, con la sua pittura intende viceversa sottolineare che quello che conta è la gentilezza d’animo, alla quale chiunque può accedere sulla base della capacità di riconoscere alla realtà una pluralità di livelli, una possibilità di mutamento, l’apertura, pur tra mille difficoltà e impedimenti, di un cammino ascensionale.
Così anche gli ambienti e le emozioni più immediate e familiari possono acquistare nuovo senso nei suoi dipinti.
Il trasparire talora in zone periferiche del quadro delle immagini dei filari d’alberi spogli che contornano i campi nella pianura veneta e nelle stagione fredda, sul far della sera, si stagliano neri contro il cielo rosseggiante, fa forse ricordare l’augurale … buon tempo si spera.
In altri dipinti sono le sensazioni provate nel corso di un viaggio in Egitto a essere rivissute.
Ecco allora quello straordinario paese, lontano nel tempo e nello spazio, avvolgerci con le sue atmosfere, dove la luce pare come irradiarsi nell’aria intrisa della polvere del deserto, mentre l’ocra delle sabbie sembra vivere del desiderio segreto di un invisibile, nilotico verdazzurro.
Ma ancor più spesso è lo sconfinato universo della notte ad affascinare il pittore.
La notte che, con il suo lento annunciarsi, con le sue oscure tenebre che tutto avvolgono, lasciando solo presagire l’infinita moltitudine delle cose terrestri, concedendoci una rinnovata quiete, ci fa indirizzare lo sguardo alle misteriose luci del cielo.
Ho avuto l’occasione di trovarmi nello studio di Raffaele Rossi a Silvelle di Sant’Ambrogio.
La luce del sole declinante accendeva i colori dei dipinti facendo aleggiare strane indefinibili atmosfere, suscitando dorati barbagli, come in antichi mosaici.
Dominava il silenzio.
La difficoltà di vivere e comunicare lasciava spazio a una muta e pensosa contemplazione.

The painting of Raffaele Rossi can only be described when taking into consideration such categories as partiality and possibility. Our perception of the completed work might coincide with what the artist intends to communicate but, on the other hand, what emerges before the observer’s eyes seems to be a mere sign, a shadow of richer images with their own stories and secret dimensions, their unknown paths and intricate meanings which the artist deliberately keeps secret and which we are called to explore and unravel.
This is not the realm of the purely visible.
When we first observe Rossi’s work, the mind goes immediately to the familiar symbolist repertoire.
The phenomenology and logic of aniconic painting, however - particularly in its various modulations of material and gesture - have not been ignored by the artist; they have instead been filtered and pondered in Rossi’s painting, thus contributing to its simplification and purification from any ornamental and decorative element, which too often only results in overloading the traditional symbolist work.
Such purifying process gives each visible element in the work a particular value. The canvas, for example, can sometimes be moulded in a slightly cuspidate shape, a reminder of ancient stone plates – recurring testimony of forgotten cultures? – or can present a cavity, a sort of niche conveying a sense of sacredness, as if to give the work of art functions of a modern secular tabernacle, devoted to the magical worship of memory.
In other works, much wider surfaces are bent, as if to physically hold the gaze and soul of the observer who becomes actively involved in the artistic process.
Rossi, faithful to this same principle, sometimes gives his painting a new spatial expansion; in a recent work for a private housing in the Balearic Islands, the artist has created enclosed spaces, haven-like spots of light where it is possible to take a distance from the innumerable concerns and worries of everyday life, in order to reflect on the meaning of existence.
In his entire production, Raffaele Rossi always conceives the work of art as a place for physical and spiritual energies to alchemically come together. To this purpose, a typical feature in Rossi’s work is the use of copper, which sometimes frames paintings, and lead, variously embossed, as if to recall with its opacity and heaviness all those individual limitations which we must overcome; the lowest point where our quest for personal development originates. The spare use of silver, on a different level, seems to suggest a desire for more luminous purity.
Regardless of the specific materials or individual elements used, however, the artist’s idea is projected into the work through a very personal artistic process; a savvy painter, Rossi makes use of glue, sand, pigments and oil paint, in order to obtain a live surface, receiving potential of greater creations.
In this process, the artist masters the initial phase – the ritual canvas preparation – but then he is suddenly urged to yield to the magical power of image, which simply asks him for a way to existence.
The observer is immediately captured by the monochrome surfaces which, even though free of any maximalism or puritan rigidity, inevitably tend to expand into vast extensions of blue, red, warm ochre, milky white or alabaster. We are therefore confronted, from the very beginning, with a further space dimension – mysterious and unexplored, supernatural and absolute in many ways, as it stands in opposition to the purely phenomenical experience of everyday images.
Are we willing to venture beyond the visible world? Reflections of life and familiar images are constantly pushing the surface; on this background, as if driven by their inner power, some figures emerge: fertile and abundant semantic models; they are not mimetic representations.
One of the key subjects in Rossi’s painting is the knight, mysteriously appearing on the scene. As the artist declares, the knight is a positive character, a winner. Unfortunately, we have no other comment from the artist, exceedingly parsimonious with words.
But, how can a winner be such, without a defeated?
The answer probably lies in the most virtuous, those who are not corrupted by the evils of power, who can recognise and appreciate Him, who amongst them demonstrates to be of a superior quality.
But how likely is this to happen in the world as we know it? This excellence is difficult to experience in everyday life.
Is Rossi addressing them? Or is he rather calling upon us to become better people, to overcome our anger and embark on a new journey, a path leading to positive emulation?
On the other hand, could Rossi’s knights ever fail to keep a promise? Could they betray a friend?
As I am attempting to describe the artist’s work, I realise that the text is unusually over-brimming with many unrhetorical questions…
Another typical subject of Rossi’s paintings is the boat, with its unmistakable outline: a symbol – to be found in all civilisations – for the ultimate journey of the dead or the eternal quest for wisdom and knowledge; the instrument par excellence of every man’s passage, be it through rocks and whirlpools, or perils and enemies attempting to stop our transit towards brighter new auroras.
The boat is also a symbol for inner journey, an individual exploration deep into the secrets and mysteries of human longings and motivations.
Whatever meaning we want to associate to the idea of the boat – a subject which represents cradle and coffin at the same time, means of transport towards Hell and unsinkable vehicle, safe haven through life’s storms – Rossi seems to be so obsessed by it that he has himself crafted a two-meters long bronze vessel.
An entire production is also dedicated to the Venetian Dogi – these are hieratical figures, faceless characters who appear as permanently sitting on their thrones, empirically unstable but at the same time solid in people’s imagination, as if to convey a need for a secure and enlightened guide or, more widely, a sense of rootedness to oppose to the rushing stream of history.
In other paintings, the surface is occupied by simple everyday objects which appear as even more unadorned and plain than usual – vases, for example, may be containers of secret and mysterious synergies or of vital spiritual treasures; alchemical vases or hermetic vases, where unconceivable wonders may be possible, where by means of mystical transmutations the self returns to a vaster entireness, within the realm of the universally human.
A further recurrent element in Rossi’s painting is the cup, as if to remind us that, somewhere, our individual destiny is being held; this thought generates inevitable questions on whether ours is an ineludible finite nature or whether there is a possibility for us to exist beyond the limits of our “mortal coil”.
The image of the sacred chalice can further urge the observer to participating to a communal quest, marked by self-commitment and sacrifice.
In other works of the artist’s, it is now the tapered outline of the fish that emerges from the surface; it is an ancient symbol of soteriology but also, by means of its indissoluble bond with water, a metaphor of the purifying bathing and, more widely, it alludes to the realm of the indistinct and submerged: an archetype of dissolution and universal integration, in an environment where individualism gives way to an unlimited entirety.
Despite all of Rossi’s symbolism, his is not a ciphered language destined to a few adepts; on the contrary, through his painting the artist is attempting to communicate that what really matters is inner kindness, which is accessible to everyone, provided they understand that reality has different levels and can constantly change, thus opening the possibility, even through difficulties and obstacles, to an ascending path.
According to this principle, even the simplest and most familiar environment or emotion can acquire a new meaning, in Rossi’s paintings.
This is the reason why rows of bare trees enclosing portions of country fields in a winter Veneto landscape, almost fading in a peripheral parts of the composition, are still projecting their dark branches towards the red evening sky, as if recalling the auspicious “rosso di sera, bel tempo si spera”.
In other works, emotions of a trip to Egypt are recollected and experienced anew - and here is that extraordinary landscape again, unfolding before our eyes; distant in time and space, yet still capturing us with its magical atmosphere, where light seems to radiate into a desert-dust thick air and the sand ochre seems to long for the secret embrace of an invisible Nile azure green.
Even more often, though, the artist seems to be enchanted by the unlimited vastness of the night. Slowly approaching, the darkness envelops and conceals all, leaving the existence of the infinite multitude of terrestrial things to the imagination only and instilling renewed tranquillity into our soul, which in turns urges us to raise our gaze towards the mysterious celestial lights.
I had the opportunity to visit Raffaele Rossi’s study in Silvelle, Sant’Ambrogio.
The light radiating from the descending sun was illuminating the colours of the paintings, creating a strange impalpable atmosphere, as if hovering in the air and producing a golden dazzle, similar to ancient mosaics.
Everywhere was silence.
In that moment, from a difficult communication stemmed a silent, thoughtful, profound contemplation.

I have produced translations for local translation agency Punto Traduzioni s.n.c., Stradella dell’Officina 7, 35013 Cittadella (Padua), including press releases for top fashion designers such as No-li-ta and Ra-Re, furniture brochures and product catalogues for local manufacturers, tourist websites and brochures for hotels and restaurants.
