I am British but since there are Spanish and German people in my family I was in contact with other languages from an early age. I became proficient in French at school, studied Latin and German and also won prizes in English Literature. After a detour into the sciences I rediscovered my love of languages in my twenties. I taught myself Spanish in a matter of weeks and later immersed myself in Arabic language and culture. After two years of self study (1994-6) I achieved a level of proficiency in dialectal and Standard Arabic and have been working on it ever since. From then I have been frequently called upon to interpret, translate and assess.
People also asked me to teach them Arabic and I married one of my pupils! While abroad I developed materials and a teaching programme that continues (with improvements!) to this day.
My time abroad did not afford me the opportunity to get recognised qualifications, so since my return to the UK I have worked to make up this deficit. I have trained with the Hertfordshire Interpreting and Translation Service, the best training centre in the country, for the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, which I received with merit in 2012. I have joined the National Register of Public Service Interpreters and been accepted as a full member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Since then, I have undertaken a wide range of translation and interpreting assignments, covering legal, scientific, managerial, medical and other fields. Interpreting has taken me as far as Kuwait and Sweden. Clients have included the UN and World Bank.
I also give tuition in Arabic and am happy to accept assignments as a language or cultural trainer. I have specialist knowledge in Moroccan/Algerian Arabic as well as the ability to explain Standard Arabic grammar simply to non-Arabs.
I an conscientious and careful to give an accurate rendition of the language that is sensitive to the culture and expected level of understanding of the recipient. I love the Arabic language and culture and this work.
