La teoria economica classica sostiene che gli individui perfettamente informati, sono portati a fare delle scelte basate sulla massimizzazione dell’utilità. Questo vuol dire che l’individuo dovrebbe sapere quale sia il prodotto più adatto alle proprie esigenze, quale sia il corso universitario che meglio si adatta al proprio profilo o l’hotel più conveniente fra le possibili opzioni. Nonostante il contributo ed il progresso delle scienze economiche, ci si sofferma ad osservare la realtà e come si comportano i consumatori.
Sarebbe riduttivo soffermarsi su una visione del consumatore strettamente razionalistica, perché non si andrebbero a considerare la complessità dei fattori emotivi e inconsapevoli che caratterizzano le loro scelte e risposte.
Secondo il vincitore del Premio Nobel per l’Economia 2017, Richard Thaler, i tratti umani come, la razionalità limitata, la mancanza di autocontrollo e le preferenze sociali, influenzano le decisioni individuali e gli esiti del mercato.
Per alcuni consumatori diventa difficile ammettere di essere stati influenzati dalla comunicazione, perché darebbe fastidio pensare di fare delle scelte condizionate da terzi e in maniera non consapevole. Grazie agli studi neuroscientifici, siamo a conoscenza di quanto il ruolo delle emozioni sia influente nel processo decisionale, così da capire il gap spesso evidente tra quanto il consumatore dice e quanto il consumatore fa.
3.1 Un nuovo modo di approcciarsi al consumatore
Prima di studiare il comportamento del consumatore, bisogna capire chi è come essere umano e, a sua volta, analizzare la sua complessità grazie al contributo di diverse discipline: dall’economia comportamentale alla psicologia e alle scienze cognitive, fino alle neuroscienze.
La disciplina del neuromarketing permette di ottimizzare la comunicazione aziendale e, grazie alle tecniche neuro scientifiche, di avere risultati più completi ed sul comportamento di acquisto del consumatore.
Caterina Garofalo, Presidente dell’AINEM Associazione Italiana di Neuromarketing, spiega in un’intervista come, oggi, da parte delle aziende c’è un crescente interesse nei confronti del neuromarketing che, deve diventare nel presente e nel futuro uno strumento strategico per l’azienda stessa, sia per l’innovazione sia per conoscere al meglio i propri clienti.
“Le piccole e grandi aziende devono comprendere che il nuovo terreno di competizione non sarà più lo share of market ma la share of attention o meglio, la quota di attenzione che il cliente potrà dedicare a loro.”(Caterina Garofalo)
Per comprendere i meccanismi e processi di attenzione e identificare da cosa è maggiormente colpito il consumatore, la disciplina del neuro marketing rappresenta la soluzione più utile a queste domande. E’ possibile avere attenzione senza esserne consapevoli e di conseguenza memorizzare. Ad esempio, è possibile che la nostra attenzione si focalizzi su una parte di un messaggio pubblicitario e che non abbia richiesto una particolare riflessione., ma va ad incidere sulla percezione del marchio. E’ per questo motivo che i bravi comunicatori si soffermano sul coinvolgimento emotivo e sensoriale del consumatore, perché sono fattori che guidano l’attenzione e a sua volta condizionano la percezione del marchio. Con il neuromarketing, in pratica, si desidera capire più da vicino la visione completa del consumatore, una visione più sensibile, introspettiva e forse anche più umana.
3.2 Che cos’è la reputazione?
Nella nostra era digitale, in cui i social network hanno accelerato in maniera impressionante la velocità con cui si propaga l’informazione, un’informazione fluida, soggetta a continui cambiamenti; la reputazione rappresenta l’elemento fondamentale per misurare il gradimento e l’effettiva riconoscibilità dell’impresa.
La reputazione è un “intangibile asset”da costruire, consolidare e mantenere in maniera viva ed attiva nel tempo. Oltre ad essere intangibile, la reputazione non è imitabile e si compone di due fondamentali variabili:
La fiducia;
Il coinvolgimento.
Quando in una comunicazione strategica aziendale, le due variabili fondamentali sono presenti, si crea una solida base su cui costruire importanti relazioni con l’azienda e con il consumatore. Solitamente, da un’azienda che gode di buona reputazione, le aspettative sono alte, sia per quanto riguarda i loro prodotti ma anche i comportamenti corretti da mantenere nel tempo. Per questo motivo è giusto dire e riconoscere la reputazione come un fattore di vera e propria garanzia.
Il cliente, consumatore, l’individuo, ogni giorno decide di scegliere quel prodotto, di quella precisa marca, appartenente a quella azienda. Dietro quello che può sembrare un gesto scontato e semplice, in realtà c’è una chiara scelta, un coinvolgimento e soprattutto un atto di estrema fiducia nei prodotti, nei servizi e nelle nostre aspettative che vengano rispettate.
Mantenere una buona reputazione nel tempo comporta una percezione positiva dell’azienda, dei suoi prodotti e delle sue azioni. Affinché la reputazione resti tale è necessario essere credibili.
3.3 Corporate Reputation
“La corporate reputation è la considerazione di cui gode un’organizzazione in virtù della sua capacità di soddisfare le aspettative degli stakeholder nel tempo.” (www.glossariomarketing.it)
La Corporate Reputation è un nuovo concetto utile per le strategie delle aziende, perché permette loro di avere una valutazione per intero dell’impresa che viene condivisa con diverse persone, sulla base di percezioni riguardanti le performance, gli obiettivi e il comportamento dell’azienda stessa.
Il raggiungimento di questi obiettivi, permetterà all’azienda di aumentare la sua reputazione, e, allo stesso tempo, al consumatore di accrescere o, in caso contrario, diminuire la percezione positiva che ha dell’azienda.
Come spiega l’autore Gianluca Comin, nel suo libro “L’impresa oltre la crisi”:
“Se l’identità e l’immagine di un’azienda hanno a che fare con ciò che si è (identità) e con ciò che appare (immagine), la reputazione riguarda una relazione bilaterale con gli stakeholder di riferimento.”
Oltre ad investire ingenti somme di denaro per pubblicizzare il proprio brand, bisogna coltivare una reputazione, una base solida rappresentata dalla fiducia e dal coinvolgimento
Altro aspetto importante per l’azienda, è quello di riuscire ad instaurare una comunicazione trasparente con i propri consumatori. Imparare ad ascoltare i loro bisogni che, spesso, gli stessi consumatori hanno difficoltà ad individuarli. Per rinforzare questa reputazione è fondamentale creare un appeal emotivo con i propri consumatori, un engagment, in modo tale da non fare percepire l’azienda solo per i suoi prodotti o servizi ma, da tutto ciò che comunica. Percepire la sua essenza, come interagisce con il proprio mercato.
E’ un obiettivo difficile ma non impossibile se l’impresa investe tempo sul costruire rapporti con la propria comunità.
Quindi, oltre alle somme di denaro, un’ottima organizzazione deve investire sul valore dell’impresa. In questo modo rafforza la propria reputazione, si assicura un posto nella mente del consumatore il quale gli assocerà una percezione positiva.
3.3.1 Gli indicatori della Corporate Reputation
Nel 1997 a New York, i professori Charles J. Fombrun e Cees B.M. Van Riel, fondarono la Reputation Institute (Ri), la più grande società al mondo di ricerca e consulenza in materia di reputazione aziendale.
Negli ultimi anni il Ri ha misurato la reputazione di molte aziende a livello mondiale, dando vita al database più importante sulla reputazione aziendale. Lo strumento utilizzato dal Ri ha il nome di RepTrack, e utilizza un metodo di rilevamento riconosciuto a livello internazionale. Questo strumento:
misura la reputazione;
identifica le parti costituenti;
confronta la performance dell’azienda con quella dei propri competitor.
Al centro del RepTrack troviamo il Pulse, il vero cuore dello strumento reputazionale. Il Pulse rappresenta il vero fattore emotivo che permette di creare un legame tra il pubblico di riferimento e una particolare azienda, e la misurazione di ciò avviene attraverso degli attributi:
Esteen;
Trust;
Admire;
Feeling.
La sperimentazione del Ri continua fino al punto di individuare ventitré indicatori, contenuti in sette dimensioni, che influenzano in maniera più o meno forte sui comportamenti positivi dei consumatori di riferimento o target audience, come ad esempio scegliere di investire in un’azienda o comprare un prodotto piuttosto che un altro.
Questa sette dimensioni rappresentano le fondamenta su cui poter lavorare per poter cambiare la percezione e il comportamento dei consumatori in caso questi avessero già una percezione negativa.
Le riporto di seguito come nel libro “L’impresa oltre la crisi”:
Product & Services;
Innovation;
Workplace;
Governanc;e
Citizenship;
Leadership;
Performance.
La misurazione di queste dimensioni dipende da una serie di giudizi che vengono espressi dagli stakeholder. Una volta espressi, i giudizi vengono sommati così da arrivare ad un risultato comune che permette di identificare il valore dell’azienda.
Gli indicatori vengono mentre divisi così i manager possono visualizzare in pochi secondi i punti critici della propria impresa e indirizzare le strategie di comunicazione per recuperare lo svantaggio con gli altri competitor.
3.4 Come costruire la reputazione
La costruzione della reputazione aziendale è un processo difficile e delicato, come muoversi all’interno di un ambiente di cristallo, dove tutto è fragile e ogni cosa ha il suo posto. Questo per dire che, basta un semplice errore di gestione, di valutazione per far crollare una reputazione costruita con tempo e sacrificio.
“Ci vogliono venti anni per costruire una reputazione e bastano cinque minuti per rovinarla.” (Warren Buffet)
La difficoltà nel costruire questo processo è dovuta sia alla natura mutevole e multidisciplinare del concetto di reputazione, ma anche perché sono necessarie una serie di attività che coinvolgono l’azienda in tutte le sue parti. Per evitare di commettere questi errori, bisogna costruire bene le fondamenta e una reputazione che sia forte, attraente ma anche e soprattutto capace di conquistare la fiducia ed il rispetto delle persone. Esistono degli elementi chiave che un’organizzazione deve tenere sempre sotto controllo, come:
Il prodotto o servizio offerto;
L’identità e la personalità;
I vantaggi che puoi offrire;
Il messaggio che comunichi e il modo in cui lo comunichi;
La credibilità.
La reputazione di un’azienda è strettamente legata all’identità, quindi a ciò che è , e con il modo che questa identità è percepita all’esterno, dai consumatori, dal pubblico o dai potenziali clienti. I punti di forza quindi sono sapere esporre con chiarezza e semplicità chi sei, cosa sai fare, quali sono gli obiettivi, i punti di forza e di debolezza.
Lo scrittore e Professore Gianluca Comin ha individuato alcuni strumenti ed azioni chiave che permettono di costruire una reputazione coerente con gli obiettivi prefissati e con i posizionamento dell’azienda:
Monitoraggio: monitorare in maniera costante e continua il sentiment del target di riferimento, analizzare le criticità e orientare la strategia di comunicazione dell’azienda sui punti di forza e istintività.
Ascolto: il primo passo del coinvolgimento è l’ascolto degli stakeholder. L’obiettivo deve essere quello di sensibilizzare i diversi interlocutori verso l’azione portata avanti dall’azienda.
Engagement: esistono altri strumenti e tecniche da utilizzare per coinvolgere i consumatori. Questa tecniche formano l’engagement che ha l’obiettivo di includere le richieste del pubblico nella creazione delle decisioni aziendali e nelle attività di comunicazione esterna delle organizzazioni.
Comunicazione trasparente: diffondete solo informazioni rispondenti al vero. La comunicazione deve essere trasparente e chiara, differenziata sui target di riferimento, senza pause e senza mai lasciare nulla al caso. Fondamentale utilizzare i social network per mantenere il dialogo con i consumatori per monitorare le proteste e raccogliere i suggerimenti.
Responsabilità: attraverso le sue persone e il suo operato, l’azienda deve mostrare un alto senso di responsabilità nei confronti della comunità in cui opera e nei confronti degli stakeholder. L’azienda deve apparire ed essere un modello di integrità e responsabilità sociale.
3.5 La reputazione online
Come nella vita reale, ognuno di noi ha una reputazione. Buona o cattiva, questa reputazione condiziona la qualità e la modalità delle relazioni di coloro con cui interagiamo.
Esistono molteplici fattori che contribuiscono alla formazione di un giudizio o reputazione, come i valori etici e morali, i progetti futuri, le azioni compiute nel passato. Tutto contribuisce alla nostra reputazione. La stessa logica vale per la reputazione aziendale e per tutti quei soggetti che devono tutelare e proteggere il proprio brand. La reputazione diventa un vero e proprio biglietto da visita.
E’ un’abitudine oggi che i consumatori interessati ad un’azienda, prima di acquistare fanno delle ricerche online, si documentano, leggono recensioni, le condividono sui vari social o ne discutono sui forum. Cercano quindi di formare nella loro mente un giudizio, in base alla percezione che hanno avuto, sull’azienda. L’utente così da consumer diviene prosumer.
E’ possibile che troviamo un’immagine dell’azienda che non corrisponde a quella reale. Fino a qualche anno fa questo non rappresentava un problema, ma oggi tutti i consumatori che vogliono sapere qualcosa sull’azienda, cercano informazioni in rete per farsi un’opinione.
La creazione di una reputazione online rappresenta un processo molto delicato. Per questo motivo, bisogna partire da un accurato monitoraggio del brand, dei manager e dei principali stakeholder che possono influenzare la reputazione. Le informazioni dovranno essere analizzate e scartate quelle superflue. Un attento studio dei concetti, delle parole e delle immagini prevalenti. A questo punto riusciamo a collocare l’azienda in una mappa e a definire la sua reputazione.
Dopo questa prima fase, ce ne sono altre che aiutano a creare un perfetto piano di azione per ricostruire la reputazione online (mettere nota pag 39):
Fotografate l’esistente: monitorare le criticità passate e presenti.
Deindicizzate con l’aiuto dei legali: chiedere a Google di deindicizzare le informazioni negative.
Contattate i media coinvolti: grazie alle media relations rimuovere i contenuti errati.
3.6 Reputation recovery
Da un semplice errore di gestione, la reputazione della nostra azienda può entrare in crisi. Una volta fatto il danno, bisogna ricostruire la reputazione nel minor tempo possibile. Per questo si mette in atto un’operazione di reputation recovery. Costruire una reputazione è un processo complesso, ma lo è ancora di più quando bisogna recuperare credibilità a causa di un comportamento sbagliato.
Bisogna concentrarsi su diversi fattori (pag44):
Distinctiveness: un’azienda gode di una buona reputazione se possiede una posizione distintiva nella mente del consumatore.
Focalizzazione: è possibile guadagnarsi visibilità concentrandosi su un tema fondamentale.
Coerenza: bisogna riguadagnarsi la coerenza perduta. Mantenere le promesse e rimanere coerenti con le proprie dichiarazioni.
Identità: l’identità, la missione e la nostra storia vanno rifiniti tutti i giorni. Coerenza tra i valori che comunichiamo e le azioni che compiamo.
Trasparenza: dire quello che si sa e comportarsi di conseguenza.
Queste sono le basi per essere di nuovo credibili agli occhi dei consumatori.
3.7 Breve storia dell’incontro tra aziende e social media
L’interesse dei manager aziendali per i social media risale al periodo in cui i blog iniziarono a diventare un oggetto d’interesse per i mass media. I blogger iniziarono a incuriosire e a far riflettere gli uomini delle pubbliche relazioni. Questi ultimi non capivano né quanto fossero importanti, né come catalogarli. Queste persone potevano influenzare la reputazione delle aziende e quindi erano un fenomeno da analizzare. Dal tentativo di comprendere si passò allo sperimentare nuovi approcci delle relazioni pubbliche. Alcuni provarono i primi contatti con i blogger, inviando loro prodotti in cambio di un feedback sincero. Altre aziende provarono a incontrare queste persone in maniera informale, per stabilire un contatto personale.
Nel 2006 si cominciò a parlare dei blog come uno strumento utile a modificare la percezione delle aziende, definite come “macchine macina soldi” (Social Media Roi, Vincenzo Cosenza, Apogeo, 2014).
Con l’aumentare degli strumenti di condivisione, aumentò anche la complessità di gestione delle attività aziendali sui social media e il disorientamento del management. Con l’avvento dei social network, ed in particolare di Facebook, molte aziende preferirono sostituire il delicato e impegnativo blog, con una pagina Facebook più snella e meno rischiosa. L’idea sbagliata è che basti una pagina piena di promozioni e post ammiccanti, per diventare social e raggiungere migliaia di persone. Mentre, l’idea di esplorare i modi più innovativi per comunicare è la scelta vincente per una credibilità duratura. Gli utenti/consumatori perdonano i piccoli incidenti di percorso che possono capitare quando si è principianti.
Oggi viviamo in una fase delicata di passaggio. Dalla consapevolezza delle sfide che pone il nuovo ambiente mediale, ai primi tentativi di gestione professionale. Quando parliamo di comunicazione tramite i social media, non dobbiamo avere in mente uno strumento tecnologico o un canale di distribuzione. Dobbiamo pensare ad un’attività con l’obiettivo di generare uno scambio di valore tra persone. Questo valore è immateriale, impossibile da misurare. Per questo motivo, è fondamentale che le attività di social media marketing e pubblic relations, si pongono obiettivi raggiungibili e misurabili. In questo modo possono guidare l’azienda verso un miglioramento.
3.7.1 Cosa è cambiato nei messaggi aziendali
Il ruolo della comunicazione in azienda è notevolmente cambiato con l’avvento dei social network. Manuel Castells sostiene che:
“La società in Rete comunica e consuma mediante la Rete, in base a processi che diffondono istantaneamente simboli e conoscenze, modificando in profondità le espressioni culturali e cambiando radicalmente le forme del potere politico e della mobilitazione sociale.” (Vincenzo Cosenza, Social Media ROI, Apogeo, Milano, 2014, pag 4)
I cambiamenti sociali che avvengono nella nostra società, incidono sul modo di essere e di comunicare delle aziende. La crescente importanza di nuovi spazi di relazione, in primis, i social network, ha esteso ulteriormente al possibilità di “dire la propria” creando gruppi di opinione, di sostegno o di critica.
Secondo Jim Lecinski, managing director di US Sales & Service di Google,
“si è passati dal First Moment of Truth (FMOT) al nuovo Zero Moment of Truth (ZMOT).” (Vincenzo Cosenza, Social Media ROI, Apogeo, Milano, 2014, pag 6)
Le ricerche di Google, mostrano come i consumatori moderni decidono l’acquisto prima di trovarsi faccia a faccia con la merce esposta. L’esperienza d’uso che rappresenta il secondo momento della verità, viene condivisa in Rete per arricchire il momento zero della verità di altre persone.
3.7.2 Le motivazioni di acquisto irrazionali
Quando parliamo di beni di consumo, l’ipotesi che l’acquirente riesce a valutare in modo obiettivo e diretto la qualità dei prodotti disponibili sul mercato è scarsa. Il consumatore instaura un rapporto di fiducia con i rivenditori e chiede di ricevere informazioni veritiere sulla qualità dei singoli prodotti disponibili. Con la diffusione della grande distribuzione, questo meccanismo ha perso parte della sua importanza lasciando spazio a diverse alternative (Mario Poiani, Alti consumatori, Editore di Comunicazione Lupetti, Milano, 1994, pag 47):
Consumatori marginali, cioè persone con minori disponibilità economiche o che tengono in scarsa considerazione la qualità. Acquistano il prodotto con il prezzo più basso.
Consumatori esigenti, provvisti di adeguate disponibilità economiche. Acquistano il prodotto con il prezzo più elevato perché sono convinti che a questo corrisponde la qualità migliore.
Molti consumatori concentrano le loro preferenze sui prodotti di grande notorietà. A questo terzo modello di acquisto appartengono i consumatori più manipolabili o, i consumatori con più bisogno di omologazione.
Nasce nelle odierne società il fenomeno dello status symbol popolare, cioè di tutti quei bene che sono accessibili sul piano economico. Il consumatore viene così convinto che certe caratteristiche del prodotto, come la novità o la presenza, rafforzano il prestigio di chi lo utilizza.
3.7.3 La comunicazione con i consumatori
In passato i consumatori venivano consultati attraverso delle ricerche di mercato, focus group e sondaggi. Nella maggioranza dei casi, il marketing si è sempre comportato in modo didattico e attivo verso un consumatore passivo che cercava le informazioni presentate dal venditore.
I consumatori parlano come lo hanno sempre fatto, ma ora preferiscono farlo online, condividendo informazioni , pareri ed opinioni con gruppi di utenti, in modo da influenzarsi a vicenda. Il bravo comunicatore capisce che nel mondo digitale, bisogna partecipare a questo colloquio in modo naturale per trarre il massimo da ogni dialogo. Bisogna investire una parte di tempo nell’ascoltare. La possibilità di coltivare una relazione significativa con i clienti aiuta questi nel creare una percezione positiva del marchio, dei prodotti, dei servizi e dell’intera azienda.
Ai consumatori interessa il modo in cui il marketing gli aiuti a prendere decisioni e a migliorare l’esperienza che vivono. Vogliono un’esperienza senza problemi e l’aziende deve impegnarsi nel fornirgliela.
Perché si possano sfruttare tutte le opportunità per sviluppare nuovi prodotti e nuove forme di comunicazione è necessario che l’azienda e i propri uomini passino a nuovi schemi mentali. La competizione richiede alle aziende nuovi modelli interpretativi per accrescere l’efficacia delle strategie commerciali, distributive e di marketing. Il consumatore è una persona ed è caratterizzata da processi mentali ed emotivi complessi.
Il marketing deve tenere conto di tale complessità cercando di colmare il gap di metodologie e tecniche.
Le dinamiche emotive dei consumatori si possono monitorare, con la condizione che le aziende sviluppino approcci nuovi per definire le proprie strategie. Lo sviluppo e l’innovazione richiedono una visione allargata e una comprensione di tutti gli aspetti che compongono la rete di relazioni in cui si trova a operare l’azienda e le persone che la compongono. Per competere con successo non basta più stabilire degli obiettivi e orientare tutti gli sforzi e le azioni per raggiungerli senza considerare con adeguata attenzione le implicazioni e gli effetti provocati da tali azioni sul sistema circostante.

L’EVOLUZIONE DELLA PERCEZIONE
L’individuo non è un recettore passivo di stimoli, ma elabora in maniera attiva e riorganizza le informazioni che riceve dall’ambiente esterno. Il termine cognizione (Keith C. Williams, Psicologia per il marketing, Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, pag. 29) viene attribuito a quei processi mentali che ci permettono di dare significato al nostro ambiente e alle nostre esperienze. Tali processi sono quindi di primaria importanza nell’apprendimento e nella percezione di eventi.
La percezione (Keith C. Williams, Psicologia per il marketing, Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, pag. 29), mentre, può essere definita come un processo complesso per mezzo del quale la gente seleziona, organizza, interpreta stimoli sensoriali per giungere a una rappresentazione del mondo dotata di significato (Markin 1974).
Ogni giorno, i nostri organi sensoriali, sono bombardati da una moltitudine di stimoli. Noi andiamo a selezionare quelli a cui prestiamo attenzione e poi li organizziamo in modo da renderli comprensibili. Il processo di interpretazione è però più complesso, e richiede qualcosa che vada oltre la semplice elaborazione di informazioni. Parliamo di un processo dinamico, in continuo mutamento, e soprattutto condizionato dalle nostre credenze, dalle nostre motivazioni, dal nostro comportamento e da ciò che abbiamo appreso in passato.
Ciò che deve fare un buon esperto di comunicazione e di marketing, è comprendere al meglio i processi percettivi, in quanto la decisione del consumatore di acquistare un prodotto piuttosto che un altro, o scegliere un determinato brand, è influenzata in larga misura dal modo in cui lui percepirà il prodotto/servizio o brand. La percezione, a sua volta, dipenderà anche dagli attributi che un esperto in comunicazione è capace di dargli.
La maggior parte delle ricerche condotte sulla percezione è stata intrapresa dagli psicologi della Gestalt (spiegazione Gestalt). Questi sostenevano che la percezione è qualcosa di più del raggruppamento di semplici stimoli separati.
La sensazione
Quando parliamo dei sensi, siamo soliti pesare e far riferimento ai cinque sensi. Questo naturale collegamento non è sbagliato, ma incompleto. Oltre alla vista, all’udito, al tatto, al gusto e all’olfatto, esistono altri sensi che non prendiamo in considerazione. Parliamo (Keith C. Williams, Psicologia per il marketing, Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, pag.30):
del dolore;
della temperatura;
dei sensi organici che ci danno informazioni sulla pressione, sul dolore e sulla temperatura;
i sensi cinestesici che ci forniscono le informazioni sulle posizioni delle nostre membra, dei nostri arti e sulla tensione dei nostri muscoli;
i sensi vestibolari che ci danno informazioni sulla posizione della testa e sono i principali responsabili del mantenimento dell’equilibrio.
Tutti questi organi insieme ci forniscono le informazioni sul mondo che ci circonda. Se non abbiamo una sensazione, non è possibile avere percezione e comprensione.
Il modo in cui il nostro cervello organizza ed interpreta le informazioni che mette in evidenza la differenza tra la sensazione, quindi la raccolta di informazioni, e la percezione, cioè il modo in cui noi organizziamo e interpretiamo queste informazioni.
Ogni nostro recettore, come, ad esempio occhi e orecchie riescono a rispondere a stimoli specifici ma entro dei limiti. Questo ci fa capire come il sistema sensoriale dell’uomo, sia in realtà limitato. Per questo motivo, negli anni, è intervenuto il progresso della scienza moderna che, ha aiutato studiosi e ricercatori a sperimentare strumenti specializzati per la misurazione di stimoli non percepibili all’uomo.
La studiosa Keith C. Williams, nel suo libro Psicologia per il marketing, evidenzia l’esistenza di una soglia assoluta e una soglia differenziale. Per soglia assoluta (nota pag31) intendiamo la stimolazione minima degli organi di senso richiesta prima che ci sia una qualsiasi esperienza sensoriale. Per soglia differenziale (nota pag31), mentre, si intende la quantità minima di stimolazione necessaria per distinguere due stimoli diversi. Più semplicemente definita: la differenza minima percepibile.
“In tutti i casi tranne i casi-limite costituiti dalle intensità estreme di stimolazione, la soglia differenziale tende ad essere una frazione costante dell’intensità dello stimolo. Questa relazione è conosciuta come legge di Weber.” (nota pag32)
Questa legge è molto interessante per l’esperto di marketing e comunicazione che desidera capire se il suo prodotto si differenzia in modo percepibile dalla concorrenza.
Sensazione e percezione
La percezione viene condizionata, oltre che dai dati sensoriali, anche dai modi in cui gli stimoli vengono presentati e da altri fattori come l’esperienza passata e l’apprendimento. Anche dove ci sono notevoli differenze sensoriali tra i prodotti, il consumatore può facilmente entrare in confusione. La confusione è data modo in cui questi vengono presentati. L’obiettivo dell’uomo di marketing consiste nell’enfatizzare quelle differenze tra i prodotti che non possono essere immediatamente visibili al consumatore; o minimizzare i confronti sfavorevoli. Per far si che la propria strategia comunicativa diventi efficace, il buon comunicatore deve capire la complessità del processo percettivo e i fattori che influenzano il modo in cui gli stimoli sono percepiti.
La percezione selettiva
In ogni momento della giornata, i nostri organi di senso sono bombardati da una moltitudine di stimoli differenti, ma solo alcuni di essi vengono da noi percepiti. La nostra attenzione si focalizza solo su un numero di stimoli, gli altri non vengono percepiti, o lo sono vagamente. Nonostante ci sembri impossibile ad ogni istante prestare attenzione a degli stimoli specifici, la nostra attenzione è dinamica. Si sposta continuamente. Può capitare che, una determinata attività catturi tutta la nostra attenzione, ma altri stimoli colpiranno la nostra coscienza e ci terranno vigili su ciò che succede intorno a noi. Quello che è al centro della nostra attenzione in un determinato momento, può essere marginale nell’istante successivo. La nostra percezione è per questo motivo molto selettiva.
E’ curioso capire come avviene la scelta degli stimoli che focalizzano la nostra attenzione. A riguardo, gli psicologi (nota pag 36) sono riusciti ad identificare un numero di fattori importanti per determinare la direzione dell’azione. Grazie ai loro studi, possiamo distinguere:
i fattori esterni, si riferiscono alle caratteristiche fisiche dello stimolo;
i fattori interni, includono i nostri scopi e le nostre aspettative.
I fattori esterni che influenzano l’attenzione
Dopo un periodo di esposizione prolungata ad uno stimolo costante, lo stimolo può cessare di produrre una sensazione. Questo processo prende il nome di assuefazione. Possiamo quindi affermare che noi percepiamo per differenziazioni. Ciò significa che la nostra attenzione è attirata di situazioni che in qualche modo differiscono dal nostro livello precedente di adattamento e di assuefazione.
Per attrarre l’attenzione dei potenziali consumatori, bisogna non sottovalutare determinati aspetti, quali:
Intensità e dimensione.
Più intensa è una luce o più forte è un suono e più probabile è che una persona se ne accorga. Allo stesso modo, le grandi dimensioni e colori accesi generalmente richiamano l’attenzione più di quanto lo facciano dimensioni piccole e colori spenti. Bisogna però stare attenti al fatto che, raddoppiare la lucentezza o la forza di uno stimolo non equivale a raddoppiare l’attenzione del consumatore. I fattori esterni ampiamente utilizzati per attrarre l’attenzione del consumatore sono i seguenti (notapag39):
Posizione.
Il pubblico dei lettori e dei giornali aumenta quando un annuncio è posto vicino a degli elementi compatibili con l’annuncio stesso.
Contrasto.
Un mutamento nel livello di stimolazione a cui siamo assuefatti attrarrà la nostra attenzione. L’uso del contrasto può essere un modo opportuno per attirare l’attenzione. L’uso alternato di dimensioni grandi e piccole, di toni forti e soffusi e di ombre più o meno marcate può essere molto efficace negli annunci pubblicitari e attrarrà maggiormente l’attenzione rispetto ad uno stimolo uniforme.
Novità.
Qualsiasi cosa differente da ciò che normalmente ci attendiamo, tenderà ad attrarre la nostra attenzione, sia essa una confezione con una forma diversa dalle solite o un mostro amabile. La novità spesso tende a perdere efficacia dopo che è stata riprodotta due o tre volte e il pubblicitario deve allora andare in cerca di una nuova idea.
Ripetizione.
Uno stimolo ripetuto ha una maggiore probabilità di attrarre rispetto ad uno presentato un’unica volta. La nostra attenzione si sposta continuamente da uno stimolo all’altro e la probabilità che uno stimolo ci catturi, mentre sta scemando la nostra attenzione rivolta ad un dato compito, sarà maggiore se lo stimolo viene ripetuto parecchie volte.
Movimento.
I nostri occhi sono involontariamente attratti dal movimento, dato che il movimento è un meccanismo di difesa del nostro corpo.
I fattori interni che influenzano l’attenzione
La nostra attenzione non solo è involontariamente rivolta a quegli stimoli che in qualche modo si staccano dagli altri, ,ma è anche volontariamente influenzata dai nostri interessi, dai nostri bisogni, dalle nostre motivazioni e dalle nostre aspettative.
Bisogni e interessi determinano tutto ciò che catturerà la nostra attenzione. Gli interessi e i bisogni hanno influenza sulla nostra percezione. Ad esempio, se abbiamo fame è più probabile che faremo attenzione a stimoli collegati al cibo, piuttosto che a stimoli associati al bere.
Accade anche che gli interessi e gli scopi di un individuo possono indurlo positivamente a selezionare dal suo ambiente determinate informazioni.
Altro fattore che gioca un ruolo di fondamentale importanza nella selezione di quanto percepiamo, è l’aspettativa o impostazione soggettiva. Questo termine, vuole indicare (nota pag 44) “la prontezza nel rispondere in un determinato modo a una data situazione o ad un insieme di stimoli”. La prontezza può essere il risultato di esperienze passate, note o sconosciute a noi stessi.
L’organizzazione della percezione
E’ capitato a tutti, credo e spero, nella propria vita di andare ad un concerto. Bene, ad un concerto, non ascoltiamo o vediamo un numero di stimoli distinti che rappresentano suoni forti o acuti, macchie di colori o variazioni di illuminazioni. Ad un concerto ascoltiamo ritmi e melodie, e vediamo musicisti e strumenti. Questo per dire che, la nostra percezione non consiste nella ricezione passiva di un numero differente di stimoli sensoriali. Ma, parliamo di un processo dinamico, piuttosto che la semplice aggregazione dei dati sensoriali.

Gli stessi psicologi della Gestalt hanno dimostrato che (nota pag 48):
La percezione coinvolge parecchie differenti tendenze all’organizzazione. Queste tendenze raramente operano isolatamente e in determinate circostanze una può annullare un’altra.
Implicazioni per il marketing
I consumatori possono tentare di valutare direttamente gli attributi di un prodotto servendosi di indici fisici quali il gusto, l’odore, la dimensione e la forma. Tuttavia, in alcuni casi, le differenze fisiche che realmente esistono tra prodotti concorrenti non possono superare la soglia sensoriale dei consumatori. In altri casi, anche se il consumatore è capace di compiere una differenziazione, egli può non essere sufficientemente esperto da valutare quali siano le differenze di prodotto in grado di determinare soddisfacimento. Questo sta a significare che, il consumatore non è in grado di dare un giudizio sulla base di sole caratteristiche fisiche del prodotto. I dati emersi dai vari studi riguardo la percezione non devono sorprendere, Lo studioso Brown (1958) (nota pag 57) infatti scoprì che:
“le casalinghe, ad esempio, percepivano il pane avvolto nel cellophane come più fresco, rispetto a quello, di pari freschezza, avvolto in carta paraffinata.”
Per l’uomo di marketing, l’uso da parte del consumatore di indicatori sostitutivi, nelle decisioni della scelta di prodotti, sta a significare che bisogna fare molte ricerche per identificare quali siano di solito gli indicatori effettivamente usati nelle decisioni d’acquisto per un particolare prodotto. L’uomo di marketing deve sempre tenere a mente che la percezione è un processo che non viene determinato soltanto dall’esperienza diretta ma è anche influenzato dall’esperienza passata dell’individuo, dall’apprendimento e dagli atteggiamenti. E’ per questo, fondamentale, analizzare attentamente il mercato prima di imbarcarsi in cambiamenti di fondo nella strategia di prodotto. Andranno analizzati gli attributi di determinati segmenti di mercato e il ricercatore dovrà rendersi conto di quali variabili agiscono in direzioni opposte.
Inoltre, il bravo uomo di marketing, deve assicurarsi che la sua strategia funzioni in una reale situazione d’acquisto.
Gli studiosi di marketing hanno riconosciuto l’importanza di fornire una piacevole immagine per i loro prodotti, in quanto si sono resi conto che il vissuto del prodotto coinvolge qualcosa di più che una valutazione razionale dei dati sensoriali.
Oggi, infatti, le società si rendono conto di quanto la loro immagine aziendale sia davvero importante per assicurarsi o meno le vendite, in particolar modo quando entrano in gioco prodotti nuovi. Un’azienda deve spendere molto tempo e denaro per crearsi una reputazione di qualità e affidabilità per i vari prodotti di marca.
Il concetto di percezione
La percezione coinvolge la selezione e l’organizzazione di dati sensoriali per giungere ad una forma dotata di significato per un dato individuo. La percezione è influenzata non solo dai dati sensoriali dell’esperienza diretta ma è condizionata dalle esperienza passate, dall’apprendimento e dagli atteggiamenti.
Come viene riportato dall’autrice Keith C. Williams, nel suo libro “Psicologia del marketing” (nota pag 60):
L’attenzione è un fattore determinante in rapporto a quanto viene percepito. I fattori esterni che controllano l’attenzione sono l’intensità e la dimensione dello stimolo, la posizione, il contrasto, la novità, la ripetizione e il movimento. Questi fattori possono essere usati nelle campagne promozionali per attirare l’attenzione dei consumatori.
L’attenzione è anche influenzata dagli interessi degli individui, dai loro bisogni, dalle loro motivazioni e aspettative. In ampia misura noi percepiamo ciò che vogliamo percepire. Grazie ad una maggiore comprensione dei bisogni e delle aspettative dei consumatori in fase d’acquisto, il responsabile del marketing avrà maggiori possibilità di escogitare appropriate strategie per i suoi prodotti.
I processi percettivi organizzano il mondo attorno ad una persona in oggetti e gruppi di oggetti. Un’adeguata conoscenza del’azione di queste tendenze organizzatrici, qual è quella fornita dagli psicologi della Gestalt, può aiutare il responsabile di marketing a creare un’immagine appropriata del suo prodotto e ad attirare l’attenzione del consumatore sulle qualità positive del prodotto in questione.
La comunicazione persuasiva di successo
“Le persone non comprano ciò che fai, comprano il perché lo fai.”
(Simon Sinek)
Con questa semplice affermazione, possiamo riassumere il forte messaggio di Simon Sinek.
Simon Sinek ha lavorato con successo nel campo della pubblicità, ma ad un certo punto della sua carriera, sommerso da dubbi, ha iniziato a farsi delle domande sulla sua motivazione, sulla leadership e a riflettere sul proprio lavoro. Il suo percorso di formazione e lavorativo, lo ha portato a pubblicare diversi libri e a divenire uno degli speaker più richiesti, nonché consulente di grandi aziende come la 3M, Disney, KPMG, ecc. Il lavoro di Sinek ha permesso a molti professionisti nel campo della comunicazione, di offrire un approccio innovativo durante qualsiasi fase di lavoro, migliorando le tecniche di persuasione al fine di sostenere al meglio la comunicazione con i clienti.
L’idea innovativa sviluppata da Sinek, è quella di invertire la consuetudine, ovvero: partire dal perché. Questa idea parte da un’analisi attenta della comunicazione: egli sostiene, infatti, che persone ed imprese mettono al centro della loro comunicazione “cosa” fanno, di conseguenza “come” lo fanno, ma si soffermano raramente sul “perché” lo fanno. Questa struttura comunicativa ci sembra logica, condivisibile e facile da comprendere, ma ha dei grandi limiti.
Comunicare, per un leader o per un’azienda, significa anzitutto persuadere, creare un impatto emotivo, avvicinarsi all’interlocutore e fare in modo che egli ascolti la nostra storia. Per questo è necessario invertire la consuetudine e partire dal perché.
Lo schema “perché – come – cosa”, il cosidetto “Golden Circle” o “Cerchio d’oro”, permette di ottenere un impatto maggiore sul nostro pubblico o interlocutore, perché asseconda la schema di funzionamento del nostro cervello.
A sostegno della tesi di Sinek, infatti, interviene la biologia. Il cervello è diviso in tre aree principali:
la neocortex (o neocorteccia), la parte più esterna e nuova del nostro cervello, dove si sviluppano i nostri pensieri razionali e analitici e sede del linguaggio; la parte del nostro cervello che corrisponde al “cosa”;
le aree che formano il sistema limbico sono la sede dei nostri sentimenti, delle decisioni istintive e del nostro comportamento, aree che non hanno capacità di linguaggio e che Sinek associa al “come” e al “perché”.
Dato che il sistema limbico non ha capacità di linguaggio, quando comunichiamo con il nostro interlocutore partendo dal “cosa”, gli offriamo la possibilità di interpretare liberamente quello che gli stiamo dicendo, dandogli una gamma d’informazioni molto ampia: caratteristiche di un prodotto, benefici, dati. In questo modo non siamo certi che egli comprenda quello che vogliamo, anzi, rischiamo che la sua interpretazione sia molto lontana dal messaggio che vorremmo far passare. Se impostiamo la nostra comunicazione partendo dal “perché”, invece, facciamo riferimento a quell’area del cervello responsabile del comportamento, facilitando la comprensione del messaggio, che viene immediatamente legata ad un comportamento concreto e razionale: trasformando le parole in un concetto tangibile, queste restano fisse nella mente dell’interlocutore. Nel dettaglio, se spieghiamo all’interlocutore “perché l’abbiamo fatto”, egli ne apprenderà la motivazione e avrà le basi razionali per determinare le proprie decisioni.
Come i grandi leader ispirano le azioni
Sinek sostiene la sua tesi facendo riferimento anche a leader di successo. Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, i fratelli Wright sono partiti dal perché, per questo sono stati tra i migliori comunicatori della storia.
Un esempio lampante della funzionalità dello schema “perché – come – cosa” si evince anche dal confronto tra DELL e Apple, due aziende molto importanti con due approcci differenti e due storie completamente diverse. Quale delle due aziende ha una grande capacità comunicativa, influenza il proprio destino ed è caratterizzata da una leadership forte e con grandi doti persuasive? Se hai risposto Apple, sei sulla strada giusta. Ma vediamo insieme il perché di questa risposta.
DELL è un’azienda importante, che da sempre produce PC, ma ultimamente sta perdendo mercato. Apple invece, nata anch’essa come produttrice di computer, è cambiata nel tempo, si è evoluta e ha modificato il proprio stile comunicativo, spostando l’attenzione dal prodotto (il computer) al perché produceva quel tipo di computer (caratterizzando il proprio brand secondo uno stile di vita desiderabile).
La modalità di comunicazione di DELL ha sempre seguito un approccio molto classico, simile a quello più utilizzato
dalla maggior parte delle aziende in tutto il mondo:
“Produciamo computer (Cosa facciamo) solidi, facili da utilizzare e all’avanguardia (Come lo facciamo).
La modalità comunicativa di Apple, invece, si è distinta da subito perché totalmente differente:
“Crediamo nelle sfide e seguiamo strade alternative (Perché lo facciamo) puntando sempre sulla semplicità e l’intuizione (come lo facciamo) e per questo progettiamo computer all’avanguardia (come lo facciamo).
Per questo la mission di Apple ha sovvertito lo stile comunicativo a cui tutti erano abituati e ha avuto successo ispirando e attraendo sempre nuovi utenti.
Tra le numerose aziende che oggi si caratterizzano per un successo senza eguali, spicca anche Facebook, nata da un sogno ben definito e con una mission molto condivisibile: dare a tutti la possibilità di creare un mondo accessibile, aperto e connesso. Applicando la metodologia proposta da Sinek al nostro lavoro, possiamo migliorare il grado di persuasione della nostra comunicazione, attraverso la creazione di siti web, immagini, testi e la gestione dei social network. Adottando la regola del “perché – come – cosa” possiamo trasformare una semplice informazione in un’interessante storia da ascoltare, rendendo ogni comunicazione persuasiva ed efficace.
I ricordi sono legati ai sentimenti, per questo le persone ricordano più facilmente perché fai un prodotto e non come lo fai. Soprattutto in un mondo caratterizzato da tecnologie avanzate e dalla standardizzazione dei processi di produzione: la globalizzazione ha reso simile il “come” anche se i siti di produzione sono dislocati in Paesi differenti. L’esempio di Apple permette di comprendere quanto sia importante per una persona poter condividere un sogno, riconoscersi nella tua sfida e nello stile di vita che offri.
Per questo è necessario imparare a raccontarsi o scegliere le persone giuste che lo faranno per te: la tua azienda è diversa dagli altri, il tuo “perché” deve essere raccontato al meglio, con le parole e le immagini giuste.

Martin Lindstrom e i comportamenti di acquisto
Alla base dell’odierna disciplina del Neuromarketing, gli studiosi si pongono una serie di interessanti domande, tra le quali:
Quali aree cerebrali si attivano durante le nostre decisioni d’acquisto?
E’ possibile elaborare dei modelli comunicativi in grado di anticipare e orientare le nostre scelte?
Un’ampia panoramica di questo fenomeno emergente che è il Neuromarketing, ci viene offerta dallo studioso danese Martin Lindstrom. Il suo approccio al Neuromarketing è iniziato dal porsi una domanda. Questa domanda è diventata sempre più decisiva nel corso della sua esperienza professionale, ovvero (nota pag 2 Neuromarketing. Attività cerebrali e comportamenti di acquisto, Martin Lindstrom, Maggioli Editore, Milano) 2009:
“nel vasto proliferare di marche cui oggi si assiste, in che modo alcune di esse riescono a imprimersi nella memoria del consumatore, mentre le restanti si dissolvono semplicemente nell’oblio?”
Lindstrom sostiene che le tradizionali forme di indagine, fondandosi su sondaggi d’opinione e ricerche di mercato, risultano inefficaci nel dare una risposta. Da qui parte l’interesse di Martin Lindstrom per il campo delle neuroscienze. Il suo obiettivo è che l’esame delle attività cerebrali connesse a degli stimoli, possa dare una risposta chiara alla domanda: in che modo si comportano i consumatori?
Le neuroscienze affermano come i brand di maggiore successo riescono a imporsi all’attenzione del consumatore, stimolando la sua affettività. A determinare la scelta del prodotto, poi, non sono le nostre considerazioni razionali. Ma un insieme di desideri e di emozioni primarie, come ad esempio: la paura o l’empatia, che si colloca sotto la soglia della consapevolezza.
La disciplina emergente del neuro marketing ha senza dubbio il potere di suscitare l’entusiasmo dei professionisti del marketing. Allo stesso tempo, suscita, anche un senso di inquietudine in noi consumatori; perché ci lascia intravedere l’idea che il pensiero umano possa essere concepito come un meccanismo di cui sia possibile conoscere e manipolare gli ingranaggi. Manipolare in maniera efficace, e, soprattutto, senza sprecare risorse.
Lo studioso Lindstrom sostiene che il neuromarketing non è che uno strumento. Quest’ultimo, in quanto tale, non è pericoloso in sé. Tutto dipende dall’uso che se ne fa. Se, da un lato, il neuro marketing rappresenta un potente strumento di persuasione, dall’altro lato, esso si rivela come una forma di conoscenza utile affinché le persone possano tutelarsi più agevolmente dal marketing.
“Capendo meglio il nostro comportamento irrazionale […] avremo in realtà più controllo, non meno.” (Martin Lindstrom, pag 5)
Neuromarketing e casi sperimentali
Per comprendere fino in fondo il funzionamento e soprattutto le effettive potenzialità del neuro marketing, è indispensabile parlare dei principali studi sperimentali svolti attraverso le tecniche e gli strumenti di Brain Imaging. Oltre ad alcuni dei più famosi esperimenti in materia, come quello della Pepsi-Cola, viene riportato il primo studio scientifico italiano di Babiloni, Meroni e Soranzo sull’argomento, ma soprattutto quello che viene definito “il più grande e rivoluzionario esperimento di neuromarketing della storia”, ossia lo studio condotto da Martin Lindstrom, uno degli esperti di marketing più apprezzati al mondo.
Caso PESPI vs COCA-COLA
Nel 1975 i dirigenti della Pepsi-Cola Company decisero di lanciare con grande clamore pubblicitario un esperimento denominato “Pepsi Challenge”.
Centinaia di agenti commerciali della Pepsi avrebbero messo un tavolino nei centri commerciali e nei supermercati di tutto il mondo, offrendo due bicchieri anonimi a chiunque si fermasse e chiedendo loro di esprimere una preferenza. Un bicchiere conteneva Pepsi, l’altro Coca-Cola.
Quando l’azienda infine raccolse i risultati, i dirigenti della Pepsi furono contenti in quanto, più della metà dei volontari aveva preferito il gusto della Pepsi a quello della Coca, ma un po’ perplessi dal fatto che, di conseguenza, la Pepsi avrebbe dovuto far mangiare la polvere alla Coca in tutto il mondo, ma così non era. Non aveva senso.
Nel suo bestseller del 2005, “Blink”, Malcolm Gladwell interpreta l’accaduto affermando che il Pepsi Challenge fosse un “Sip Test” (test del sorso) e che per un solo sorso si tende a preferire il prodotto più dolce (in questo caso la Pepsi) ma, quando si beve una lattina intera, è sempre in agguato la possibilità di un eccesso di zucchero nel sangue. Per questo motivo, secondo Gladwell, la Coca-Cola continuava ad essere leader sul mercato.
Nel 2003 però il dottor Read Montague, direttore dello Human Neuroimaging Lab del Baylor College of Medicine a Houston, riprese lo studio, ma questa volta con la fMRI per misurare l’attività cerebrale di 67 soggetti. Innanzitutto, fu chiesto ai volontari di esprimere una preferenza tra Coca e Pepsi e si poté notare che i risultati corrispondevano quasi alla virgola a quelli dell’esperimento originale: più della metà dei soggetti dichiarò una preferenza netta per la Pepsi. E i loro cervelli lo confermavano: mentre beveva la Pepsi, questo gruppo di soggetti faceva registrare un’intensa attività nel putamen ventrale, regione del cervello stimolata quando si trova attraente un gusto. Interessante, finché nella seconda fase dell’esperimento non è emersa una scoperta affascinante.
Venne chiesto ai volontari di assaggiare la Pepsi o Coca prima che bevessero. Risultato: più della metà degli intervistati, sosteneva di preferire la Coca.
Avviene un cambiamento di fondamentale importanza durante questo esperimento. Due regioni del cervello erano impegnate in una silenziosa gara fra pensiero razionale ed emozionale, e che, proprio durante quel secondo di incertezza, le emozioni si alzavano per vincere la preferenza razionale degli intervistati per la Pepsi, e quello era il momento in cui la Coca vinceva.
Tutte le associazioni positive che i soggetti avevano con la Coca-Cola - la sua storia, il colore, il logo, la fragranza, il design, gli spot televisivi martellati negli anni, la pura, incontrovertibile, ineluttabile, emozionale Cocacolità del marchio – vincevano inesorabilmente la naturale e razionale preferenza per la Pepsi. Perché? Perché le emozioni sono il modo in cui il nostro cervello codifica le cose di valore, e un marchio che ci implichi un coinvolgimento emotivo vincerà sempre, in tutte le occasioni.
Caso DAIMLER-CHRYSLER
Nel 2002 il centro di ricerche della Daimler-Chrysler a Ulm, in Germania, ha usato la tecnica della fMRI per analizzare le reazioni di alcuni soggetti a cui venivano mostrate immagini di una serie di automobili, fra cui Mini Cooper e Ferrari.
Hanno scoperto che quando i partecipanti vedevano una diapositiva di una Mini Cooper, si attivava una piccola area nella zona posteriore del cervello, che risponde ai volti.
La fMRI aveva isolato l’essenza del fascino di una Mini Cooper: veniva registrata nei cervelli dei soggetti come un volto adorabile, “era una simpatica personcina, Bambi su quattro ruote o Pikachu con un tubo di scappamento” (Neuromarketing. Attività cerebrale e comportamenti d’acquisto.”, Martin Lindstrom, Apogeo , p.32. )
Non c’è dubbio che i volti di bambino abbiano un potente effetto sul nostro cervello.
In uno studio dell’Università di Oxford, basato su una tecnica di imaging denominata magnetoencefalografia, il neuroscienziato Morten L. Kringelbach ha chiesto a 12 adulti di svolgere un’attività al computer, mentre su uno schermo vicino scorrevano i volti di bambini piccoli e adulti.
I volontari elaboravano i volti con le regioni cerebrali che normalmente gestiscono attività di questo genere, ma tutti mostravano una risposta più rapida ai volti dei bambini. In altre parole, il cervello dei partecipanti identificava i volti dei bambini come qualcosa di speciale.
Sono arrivate poi delle scoperte più curiose. I ricercatori della Daimler-Chrysler hanno mostrato immagini di 66 auto diverse a una dozzina di soggetti maschi, sempre sottoposti a fMRI. Questa volta, le automobili sportive stimolavano la regione del cervello associata a “ricompensa e rinforzo”, secondo Henrik Walter, psichiatra e neuroscienziato coinvolto nello studio. E che cos’è in molti casi la cosa più soddisfacente per i maschi? Il sesso.
A quanto pare, i soggetti maschi di questo studio subconsciamente cercavano di attrarre il sesso opposto con la carrozzeria abbassata, il rombo del motore e le finiture cromate delle auto sportive.
Walter ha fatto addirittura un passo in più, spiegando che, “proprio come le femmine degli uccelli respingono i maschi con un piumaggio scarso preferendo quelli più ricchi di piume e più colorati, perché la lunghezza e la lucentezza del piumaggio di un pavone maschio è in rapporto diretto con il suo vigore, la sua virilità e il suo status sociale” (Neuromarketing. Attività cerebrale e comportamenti d’acquisto.”, Martin Lindstrom, Apogeo , p.32) così le donne preferiscono gli uomini con una macchina sportiva vistosa e dalla linea affusolata.
4.8 Gli esperimenti di Martin Lindstrom
Martin Lindstrom è uno degli esperti di marketing più apprezzati al mondo. Il suo obiettivo è di condividere le sue metodologie attraverso conferenze e consulenze.
Lo studio di Lindtrom è iniziato nel 2004, ha richiesto circa tre anni.
Normalmente un ricercatore formula un’ipotesi, la analizza, la perfezione e poi progetta un modello per metterla alla prova. Alla fine l’esperimento sarà pronto. Lindstrom è partito, infatti, da una serie di ipotesi, tutte basate su ciò che aveva appreso e osservato in vent’anni come consulente di aziende per la creazione di brand duraturi.
Tra le sue ipotesi, vi era quella sulle scritte dissuasive sui pacchetti di sigarette che, in realtà, incentivavano il fumo. Una seconda ipotesi che esistesse uno stretto legame tra lo sport e la religione, ecc. Lindstrom ha preso così queste ipotesi e dopo varie ricerche ha penato come metterle alla prova, utilizzando le tecniche di neuroimaging.
4.8.1 ESPERIMENTO 1
LE ETICHETTE DISSUASIVE SUI PACCHETTI DI SIGARETTE
Si pensa che gli avvertimenti o le immagini, spesso molto crude, ben in vista sui pacchetti di sigarette possono fermare la maggior parte dei fumatori.
Nonostante queste immagini, si stima che circa un terzo dei maschi adulti su tutto il pianeta continui a fumare.
I fumatori sono selettivamente ciechi alle etichette dissuasive?
Lindstrom cerca di rispondere proprio a tale domanda attraverso questo esperimento (Neuromarketing. Attività cerebrali e comportamenti di acquisto, Martin Lindstrom, Maggioli Editore, Milano 2009, pag 9) che ha coinvolto 32 fumatori, sottoposti prima a un questionario e a un’intervista, per poi passare allo studio del loro cervello attraverso la tecnologia fMRI.
I volontari restavano sotto lo scanner per circa un’ora e nel contempo un apparecchio riflettente proiettava una serie di etichette dissuasive del pacchetto di sigarette, riprese da varie angolazioni, una dopo l’altra, su uno schermo.
Durante questa proiezione, il soggetto doveva esprimere una valutazione della sua voglia di fumare premendo il cosiddetto “button box” alla presentazione di ogni immagine.
I risultati sono stati che: le etichette dissuasive non avevano alcun effetto deterrente sulla voglia di fumare, anzi, in realtà stimolavano un’area del cervello, detta “centro del desiderio”. Questa regione consiste in un insieme di neuroni specializzati che si attiva quando si desidera qualcosa e, una volta stimolato, richiede dosi sempre più elevate per essere soddisfatto.
Durante le interviste, la maggior parte dei volontari affermava che le etichette dissuasive funzionassero, e questo non nascondeva la vergogna per quello che il fumo faceva al loro corpo, bensì il senso di colpa per il fatto che le etichette stimolassero le aree del desiderio nei loro cervelli, solo che la loro mente non riusciva a stabilire la differenza.
4.8.2 Quinto Esperiemento
IL SENSORY BRANDING: L’OLFATTO E IL CASO NOKIA
Oggi siamo iperstimolati visivamente. Quanto più siamo stimolati, tanto più è difficile catturare la nostra attenzione.
Indubbiamente la vista è un fattore fondamentale nel nostro comportamento d’acquisto, ma in molti casi non è così importante come si è sempre ipotizzato. L’olfatto e udito sono decisamente più potenti di quello che si sia mai pensato.
La verità è che le immagini diventano più efficaci e memorabili quando sono abbinate a un altro senso, si parla infatti di Sensory Branding.
Quasi tutti conosceranno molto bene la famosa e inconfondibile suoneria caratteristica della Nokia. Quando sono stati commercializzati i telefoni Nokia, la suoneria standard è diventata subito popolare, soprattutto perché era la prima melodia riconoscibile con la diffusione dei telefoni cellulari, e da allora ha acquisito una specie di viralità. Tutto ciò, si potrebbe pensare, dovrebbe essere solo un vantaggio per il brand e con questo esperimento Lindstrom ha cercato di capire se un suono caratteristico, come la suoneria della Nokia, rende più o meno attraente un brand.
Lo studio è stato condotto su quattro diverse categorie di prodotti: telefoni, software, linee aeree e varie immagini di Londra. Per ogni categoria sono stati scelti dei suoni abbinati. Sono state illustrate ai volontari dieci immagini distinte per ogni brand e, per confronto, anche immagini prive di alcun rapporto con i suoni caratteristici.
Poi è stata presentata la parte musicale: per i brand generici di benchmark sono state utilizzate melodie che andavano da suonerie casuali a un estratto di Bach.
Prima sono stati mostrati i singoli brand in segmenti distinti, di 10 minuti ciascuno, durante i quali ai partecipanti venivano presentati prima solo i suoni, seguiti dalle immagini da sole e poi dalle immagini e dai suoni insieme. Questa sequenza è stata ripetuta per cinque volte di fila e intanto ai volontari era chiesto di segnalare la propria preferenza per le immagini, i suoni o le combinazioni immagine-suono mediante dei pulsanti. I risultati evidenziano che suoni e immagini, presentati simultaneamente, vengono percepiti in modo più favorevole che non isolatamente.
L’attenzione dei consumatori aumenta quando sentono una melodia caratteristica mentre vedono un’immagine o un luogo riconoscibili e ricordano di più quello che vedono e sentono quando la melodia e il logo sono presentati simultaneamente. Una marca però, rispetto alle altre era andata tremendamente male.: Nokia aveva fallito il test del suono. I soggetti dell’esperimento avevano valutato positivamente le immagini dei cellulari Nokia, ma i risultati della fMRI mostravano che c’era una risposta emotiva negativa legata alla suoneria. Infatti il solo sentire quel suono annullava i sentimenti positivi che il cervello dei volontari mostrava alla vista delle immagini dei telefonini.
Dopo aver sentito la suoneria, i soggetti indicavano una maggiore preferenza per le immagini di confronto senza relazione fra loro che per quelle dei cellulari Nokia.
Lo squillo evocava forti associazioni negative che allontanavano completamente i soggetti dal brand.
Il problema della suoneria della Nokia, secondo Martin Lindstrom, era che le persone avevano iniziato a non sopportare più quella melodia. Il cervello associava quel suono all’intrusione, all’interruzione e a un senso di irritazione, nonostante fosse diventato familiare.
Riflessione sul neuro marketing
Un primo ostacolo per le aziende desiderose di sperimentare nel campo del neuro marketing, è, sicuramente, il costo delle attrezzature e delle strumentazioni necessarie alle rilevazioni dell’attività cerebrale.
Inoltre, le azienda che desiderano consulenze di neuro marketing, non hanno le conoscenze necessarie per verificare la qualità e la validità dei risultati poiché, la maggior parte dei responsabili di marketing, non ha ancora un background e una formazione sufficiente per valutare l’affidabilità di queste tecniche.
Riuscire a cogliere le reazioni emotive e scoprire gli aspetti più profondi del comportamento di acquisto del consumatore, e, del suo pensiero rispetto al brand, ai prodotti, alle pubblicità; per molti rappresenta una minaccia. Questo perché potrebbe danneggiare l’autonomia e l’individualità dei consumatori.
Ci sono delle regole fondamentali da tenere ben presenti quando si parla di neuro marketing, e, soprattutto quando si vuole studiare attentamente il consumatore. Queste regole, prevedono che:
Bisogna usare l’aspetto emotivo più della riflessione.
L’utilizzo del registro emotivo apre le porte dell’inconscio. Queste sono utili per impiantare idee, desideri, paure, timori o indurre comportamenti.
Bisogna conoscere gli individui meglio di quanto loro stessi si conoscono.
Grazie alla collaborazione degli studi di psicologia, biologia e neurologia, oggi, siamo in grado di conoscere meglio l’individuo. Meglio di quanto esso stesso si conosca. Questo vuol dire che, nella maggior parte dei casi, il nostro sistema ha un controllo maggiore sugli individui, maggiore di quello che lo stesso individuo esercita su di sé.

IN THEORY RATIONAL BEING, IN PRACTICAL HUMAN BEING
According to the classical economic theory, a perfectly informed individual is led to take decisions taking into account the highest usefulness. That means that we know what is the best product that may satisfy our needs, what is the most suitable university carreer for us or the cheapest hotel among several options. Nevertheless scholars keep observing the reality and the users' behaviour.
By the way it wouldn't be correct to dwell on a strictly rational point of view. We should take into account the complexity of the emotional and unaware factors which lead our choices and responses.
Richart Thaler, Nobel Award for Economy in 2017, thinks that human features as the limited rationality, the lack of self-control and the social preferences, influence individual decisions but also the market's outcome.
Fos some consumers will be pretty hard to admit they have been infuenced by advertising spots because it would mean their choices are conditioned by third party and unconsciously.
Thanks to the neuroscientific studies now we know that emotions play a very powerful role in the decision-making process, so we are able to undesrtstand that gap between what the user says and what the user does.
3.1 A new approach to the consumer
Before studying consumer's behaviour we need to know who he or she is as a human being and, then, analyse his or her complexity. To do that we have several disciplines: behavioral economy, psychology, cognitive science and also neuroscience.
Neuromarketing studies improve the business communication and thanks to its scientific techniques produce better results in the consumer's purchasing process' analysis.
In a interview Caterina Garofalo, president of AINEM (neuromarketing italian association), explains how today business is getting more and more interested in neuromarketing and how this discipline is becoming a strategical tool both for innovation and for the knowledgment of the users.
"Small and big agencies should understand that the new challenge is not the share of market anymore but it is the share of attention, or better the share of attention the consumer can give to them" (Caterina Garofalo)
In order to understand mechanisms and processes of attention and identify what the user is mostly impressd by we have to address our questions to the discipline of neuromarketing. It is possible that we are struck by something unconsciously and therefore we memorize it. For example it is possible we focus our attention on a part of an advertising spot and it doesn't require a particular reflection, but by the way it will influence our perception of the brand. For this reason good communicators work on the emotional and sensorial involvement, they know that this factors lead the user's attention and then influence the perception of the brand. In practical, neuromarketing wants to better understand the consumer's point of view and it uses a more sensitive and introspective approach to do that, maybe a more human one.
3.2 What is reputation?
In the digital era social networks have impressively accelerated the spread of information which have became more fluid and prone to constant changes. Therefore reputation represents the basic element to measure the liking and the effective recognition of an agency.
Reputation is a intagible asset we need to build, consolidate and keep alive in time. More than intangible, reputation is also inimitable and is formed by two basic variables:
Trust;
Involvement
When both these elements are present in the agency's strategic communication, that means there is a solid base on which we can built up important relations with the users.
Usually, expectations by an agency that has a good reputation are high, both as concerns their products and also the correct behaviour it should keep in time. For this reason we can strongly affirm and recognise reputation is a real guarantee.
Customers, consumers, individuals choose those products, that brand and that agency everyday for a reason. Behind an action which may seem simple, actually, there is a clear choice, a involvement and especially an act of extreme faith in items, in services and in our expectations.
Keeping a good reputation in time brings a positive percetion of the agency, of its products and its actions. In order to keep a good reputation we need to be believable.
3.3 Corporate Reputation
“Corporate reputation is the consideration of an organisation according to its ability of satisfy stakeholders' expectations in time" (www.glossariomarketing.it)
Corporate Reputation is a new concept and is useful for agencies' strategies. It provides them an assessment according to the perception of their performances, their targets and the own agency's behaviour. Achieving these goals will increase the reputation and at the same time the consumer's positive perception of the agency.
According to Gianluca Comin, author of “L’impresa oltre la crisi” ("Business over the crisis"):
“If the identity and the image of an agency depend on what it is (identity) and how it appears (image), then reputation concerns a bilateral relation with the reference stakeholder"
In addition to invest large amount of money in advertising the own brand, agencies should cultivate their reputation which it must be reminded is based on trust and involvement.
Another important aspect for the enterprise is the one concerning a transparent communication with its customers. It should learn to listen to their needs which the same customers often don't manage to identify. In order to strenghten this reputation is necessary to create a emotional appeal, a engagment, so that users can perceive the enterprise not only for its products but especially for all it comunicates. They should perceive its essence and how it interacts with its own market.
It is an hard achievement but it is not impossible if the business invests its time in building up strong relations with its own community.
Therefore besides money, a good agency has to invest in its value. Only by doing that it can increase its reputation and ensure a place in the customer's mind, who will associate a positive perception to it.
3.3.1 Corporate Reputation's markers
In 1997 in New York professors Charles J. Fombrun and Cees B.M. Van Riel, started the "Reputation Institute" (Ri), the biggest research and consultancy society in the world in the field of corporate reputation. During the last years the Ri measured the reputation of many big companies and it created the biggest corporate reputation database.
The tool used by the Ri is called RepTrack and it uses a detection method that is internationally recognised. This tool:
gauge the reputation;
identify the constituents parts;
compare the agency's performance to its competitors' one.
At the center of the RepTrack we find the Pulse, the real core of this instrument. The Pulse represents the emotional factor that create the link between the reference audience and a particular business. The measurement of this factor depends on:
Esteem;
Trust;
Admiration;
Feeling.
The Ri's testing goes to great lengths to identify twentythree markers contained in seven dimensions. These markers influence in a pretty strong way the positive bahaviours of reference consumers or target audience, like for example the choice of investing in a business or buying a product rather than another.
These seven dimensions represent the fundamentals that may change the users' opinion and actitude in case they already have a negative perception of the business. Here I mention the seven factors as they are named in the book "Business over the crisis":
Product & Services;
Innovation;
Workplace;
Governance;
Citizenship;
Leadership;
Performance.
The testing of these dimensions depends on a number of judgements expressed by the stakeholders. Once they are expressed, these judgements are summed up in order to gain a common outcome which gives us the agency's value. The markers will be divided so that the managers can see in few seconds the business' critical points and address the communication strategies to make up the deficit with the competitors.
3.4 How to build reputation
Building up a corporate reputation is an hard and delicate process, as moving within a crystal environment where everything is fragile. That means a little management or assessment mistake is enough to destroy a reputation built with time and sacrifice.

The difficulty of this process is due both to the multidisciplinary and fluid nature of the reputation's concept and to the fact that all the divisions of the corporation are involved in a number of activities. In order to avoid mistakes, we need to built strong fundamentals and a strong reputation. This reputation has to be also attractive and able to conquer the trust and the respect of people. A corporation has always to take under control these elements:
The offered product or service;
Identity and personality;
Benefits it may offer;
The message it wants to communicate and how it should be communicated;
Reliability.
The corporate's reputation is strictly linked to its identity, so to what it is, and to the way this identity is perceived by the audience and the potential customers. Therefore the strenghts is knowing how to present yourself with clarity and simplicity, what are you able to do, what are your targets and also what are your weaknesses.
The writer and professor Gianluca Comin identified some key tools and actions that help to built a reputation coherent to the predefined targets and to the agency's position:
Monitoring: constantly monitoring the target's feeling, analysing the critical findings and direct the communication strategies on the business' strenghtens and instincts.
Listening: the first step of the involvement is listening to the stakeholders. The aim should be raising people's awareness and involve them in the business' actions;
Engagement: it is the set of all the other tools useful to get the cosumer involved. Engagement aims at including audience's requests in the agency's decision-making processes and in external communication actions;
Transparent communication: you should only spread information coinciding with the truth. Communication should be transparent, clear, different according to the target, without pauses and not left up to chance. It is essential to use social networks to keep in touch witht the users, monitor their protests and take their tips and suggestions;
Responsability: the corporate has to show a high sense of responsability toward its community through its personnel and actions. The agency has to appear as and be a model of integrity ans social responsability.
3.5 The online reputation
As in real life, everyone has a reputation. Good or bad, this reputation influence the quality and the nature of our relationships.
Several factors contribute at the creation of a judgemnt or reputation, as the ethical and moral values, the projects for the future and the actions of the past. Everything contribute toward our reputation. The same logic works for the corporate reputation and for all those subjects that have to protect their own brand. Reputation becomes a real business card.
Indeed, nowadays consumers are used to check out on the web information about agencies before taking their decisions, they read up and look for feedbacks, share on social networks and discuss in forums.
In other words they try to create in their mind a judgement based on their perspection of the agency. So the user from consumer becomes prosumer.
It is also possible to find a image of the corporate that doesn't match with the real one. Up to some years ago this was not a problem but today all the consumers looking for information about a business search for it on the web.
The building of a online reputation represents a very delicate process. For this reason we need to start by an accurate monitoring of the brand, the managers and the main stakeholders who may influence the reputation. The useful information will be analysed and the useless ones discarted. We need to carefully study the concepts, the words and the main images. At this point we can place our business in a map and define its reputation. After this first step there are others that help in the construction of a perfect action plan to rebuild the online reputation:
Taking a metaphorical picture of the present situation: we have to monitor past and present critical moments;
De-index with the help of your lawers: you have to ask Google to de-index the bad information;
Get in contact with the involved media: thanks to the media relations you can remove the incorrect contents.
3.6 Reputation recovery
Our business may get into a crisis after a very little mistake. Once the damage has been done we need to recover our reputation as soon as possible. For this reason there are the so-called operations of reputation recovery. It has been already said that building a reputation is a very complex process but it is even harder to recover reliability after a wrong actitude. We need to focus on several points (page 44):
Distinctiveness: a business has a good reputation if it owns a distinctive position in consumers' mind;
Focusing: it is possible to gain visibility by focusing on a main theme;
Coherence: we need to take back our lost coherence. We have to keep our promises and be coherent to our statements;
Identity: our identity, mission and story have to be refined every day. There must be coherence between what we communicate and what we do by actions;
Transparence: we always have to say what we know and behave consequently.
This is the basis to be reliable in the eyes of consumers again.
3.7 Short story about the meeting between agencies and social media
Managers started to be interested in the social media at the same time blogs started to be interesting for the mass media. Firstly bloggers made PR curious and started to make them reflect, PR didn't get how important these bloggers were and they didn't even know how to catalogue them. Bloggers managed to influence the corporate reputation and so they surely were a phenomenon to carefully analyse. Then they stopped trying to understand the phenomenon and they started to experiment new approaches in the public relations. Some tried to get in contact with the bloggers, by sending them products in change of sincere feedbacks. Others tried to meet these people in a informal way in order to establish a personal contact.
In 2006 they started to talk about blogs as a useful tool which might change the perception of the agencies, defined as "moneymaker machines" (Social Media Roi, Vincenzo Cosenza, Apogeo, 2014).
With the increase of sharing tools, it became even more complex to manage the business activities on social networks and the disorientation raised. The coming of the social networks, in particular Facebook, led a lot of enterprises to substitute the delicate and challenging blog with a simpler and less risky Facebook page. The wrong idea is that a page full of advertising and winking posts is enough to become social and reach thousands of people. Instead, the winning idea for a longlasting reliability is looking for a more innovative way to communicate. Users forgive little bumps in the road because they may happen when you are a principiant.
Today we are leaving a delicate transitional phase. We are getting more and more aware about the new challanges linked to the media and we are discovering a new professional management. When we talk about media communication we must not think about a technological tool or a distribution channel. We must think about an activity which aims at generating a value exchange among people. This value is not material and it is impossible to measure. For that, it is fundamental that social media marketing e pubblic relations have achievable and measurable goals. In this way they can lead the business toward a improvement.
3.7.1 What changed in business' messages
The business communication role significantly changed after the coming of social networks. Manuel Castells states that:
“Society communicate and consume through the Web according to processes that instantly spread symbols and knowledgment, deeply modifying cultural expressions and the shape of the political power and the social mobilisation" (Vincenzo Cosenza, Social Media ROI, Apogeo, Milan, 2014, page 4)
Social changes affect the business' way to be and to communicate. The growing importance of new relational spaces, especially of social networks, has expanded further the possibility of "have a voice" and created opinion, critic or research groups.
According to Jim Lecinski, managing director of US Sales & Service of Google:
“We passed from the First Moment of Truth (FMOT) to the new Zero Moment of Truth (ZMOT).” (Vincenzo Cosenza, Social Media ROI, Apogeo, Milan, 2014, page 6)
Google researches show how modern consumers decide what to buy before finding themselves in front of the exposed merchandising. The use experience that represents the second moment of truth is shared on the web to enrich other people's Zero Moment of Truth.
3.7.2 The irrational reasons of a purchase
When we talk about consumer goods we have to know that the buyer barely manages to assess the available products in a objective and direct way. The consumer establishes a relationship of trust with the seller and asks for true information about the quality of each available good. Afer the diffusion of the big distribution, this mechanism lost part of its importance giving space to other alternatives (Mario Poiani, Alti consumatori, Editor of "Comunicazione Lupetti", Milan, 1994, page 47):
Marginal consumers, that means people with less money or that don't care about the quality. They buy the cheapest good;
Exigent consumers with large amount of money. They buy the most expensive good because they are convinced it is of a higher quality;
A lot of consumers focus their preferences on famous goods. These users are the most manipulable and they may strongly need omologation.
In the modern society we find the phenomenon of the popular status symbol, that means all those goods which are achievable in a economic sense. Therefore the consumer is convinced by the enterprises' actions that a good have some characteristics, as the novelty or the very presence, which strenghten his or her prestige.
3.7.3 The communication with the consumers
In the past consumers were been involved through market researches, focus group and surveys. In the most of the cases marketing always behaved in an active and didactical way toward the consumer who was instead passive and in search of the information presented by the seller. Consumers keep speaking as they have always done, the only difference is that now they prefer doing it online, sharing opinions and information in users groups in order to influence each other. The expert communicator understands that in the digital world he has to participate at these interactions in a natural way in order to make the most from each dialogue. We should invest a great part of the time in listening the other. The possibility of bulding meaningful relation with customers helps them to create a positive perception of the brand, the products and the services of the corporate.
Consumers are interested in the way marketing help them to take decisions and to improve the purchasing experience. More specifically they search for a experience without problems, so the agency has to work to provide them with it.
In order to take advantage of all the chances to develop new goods and new ways of communication the agency has to acquire new thought patterns.
Competition asks the corporates for new interpretative models to increase the effectiveness of the commercial, distributive and marketing strategies. The consumer is first of all a human being and is featured by very complex emotional and mental processes. Marketing has to take into account this complexity and try to fill the methodological and technical gap.
Consumers' emotional dynamics can be monitored as long as the agencies develop new approaches to define their strategies. Development and innovation requires a large view and the knowledgment of all the aspects involved in the agency and its staff's relations. In order to compete successfully it is not enough having a aim anymore, we need also to pay attention to the effects and consequences of our actions on the surrounding system.

THE PERCEPTION'S EVOLUTION
The individual is not a passive receiver of stimulus, he reworks and redesigns external information in an active way. The term cognition (Keith C. Williams, "Psychology for the marketing", Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, page 29) refers to those mental processes which allow us to give a meaning to our environment and our experience. Therefore these processes are significantly important in the moment of learning and in the perception of events.
The perception (Keith C. Williams, "Psychology for marketing", Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, page 29), instead, can be defined as a complex process occurring when people select, organise, interprete stimulus in order to reach a meaningful representation of the world (Markin 1974).
Every day our sensory organs are swamped with billion of stimulus. We select those we pay attention to and then organise them in order to make the information understandable. Nevertheless the interpreting process is more complex and requires something more than the simple elaboration of the information. We are talking about a dynamic and constant process, conditioned by our beliefs, reasons, behaviours and by what we learnt in the past.
Since our decision-making process is basically affected by how we perceive a product, what a good communication and marketing expert should do is to understand at best these perceptive processes. Perception, in turn, will depend also on the attribute the communicator is able to give to the merchandise.
The most part of the research on perception has been taken by the psychologists of Gestalt. For the latter perception is something more than a set of simple and single stimulus put together.
Feelings
When we talk about senses we usually refer to the five senses. This link is correct but incomplete. Besides sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell there are other senses which we never take into consideration. We are talking about (Keith C. Williams, "Psychology for marketing", Il Mulino, Bologna 1997, pag.30):
pain;
temperature;
organic senses that give us information about pressure, pain and temperature;
kinesthetic senses that give us information about the position of our limbs and extremities and about the tension of our muscles;
vestibular senses that give us information about the position of our head, they are the main responsible for the balance;
All these organs put together provide us information about the surrounding environment. Without feelings there is no perception and without perception there is no understanding.
The way our brain organise and interprete information underlines the differenece between feelings, which means collection of information, and perceptions, namely how we organise this information.
Every single receptor, like eyes and ears for example, responds to specific stimulus but it does it within limits. This means that actually our sensory system is limited. For this reason, over the years, the development of modern science brought scholars to experiment new tools used to measure stimulus not perceived by man.
Scholar Keith C. Williams in her book "Psychology for marketing" underlines the concepts of absolute threshold and differential threshold. The first one (note page 31) is the minimum organs' stimulation requested before a whatever experience. The second one (note page 31), instead, is the minimum organs' stimulation needed to distinguish two different stimulus. In other words it is the minimum perceptible difference
“In all the cases at the exception of the borderline case where there is a extreme intensive stimulation, the differential threshold tends to be a constant fraction of the intensity of the stimulus. This connection is known as the law of Weber” (note page 32)
This law is very interesting for the communication expert who is keen to understand wether his product differs from his competitors' one in a perceptive way.
Feelings and perceptions
Besides sensory data, perception is contioned also by the way these stimulus arrive and by other factors as the past experience and the learning. Even when there are significantly differences between the products, the consumer may get confused. Confusion is given by they way these products are presented. The aim of the marketing expert is to emphasise these differences which are not immediately evident to the consumer but he also wants to minimise the unfavourable comparisons.
In order to make own communicative strategy become effective, the good communicator should understand the complexity of the perceptive process and know the factors which influence the way stimulus are perceived.
The selective perception
Our sensory organs are swamped with different stimulus all day long but we only perceive some of them. Our attention only focuses on some of them and the many others are barely perceived or are not perceived at all. Even though it seems impossible to pay attention to specific stimulus every single moment, our attention is dynamic, it moves constantly. It may happen that at the same time a certain activity gets our attention but other stimulus hits our conscience and then keeps us alert on what happens in the surroundings. What is at the center of our attention in a given moment may suddenly become fringe in the next moment. For that, our perception is very selective.
It is very curious to know how this stimulus selection happens. Talking about that, psychologists (note page 36) managed to identify several important factors involved in the direction of our actions. Thanks to their studies we can distinguish:
external factors, which refer to the physical features of the stimulus;
internal factors, which include our aims and expectations;
External factors influencing the attention
After a long period of exposure to a constant stimulus, the same stimulus may stop producing a feeling. This process is called habituation. So we can claim we peceive by differentiation. That means our attention is attracted by situations which somehow differ from what we are adapted and used to.
So in order to get potential consumers' attention, we can't undervalue some aspects, namely:
Intensity and dimension
The stronger a light or a sound are more probably we will notice them. In the same way, big dimensions and bright colors generally draw attention more than small dimensions and off colours do. Nevertheless we must know that increasing the strenght of a stimuls doeasn't mean increasing the consumer's attention. The main external factors used to get the user's attention are the following (note page 39):
Position
Magazines readers' audience increase when the advertising is placed next to elements compatible with the same advertising.
Contrast
This method works when there is a stimulation wich differs from all those we are used to. Contrast always draws our attention. The alternate use of big and small dimensions, bright and light colors or more or less marked shadows are much more effective in advertising than a uniform stimulus.
Novelty
Whatever differs from we normally expect will tend to get our attention, like a package with a particular shape or a lovely monster. Novelty often tends to lose effectiveness after its second or third repetition, at this point the commercial has to find another idea.
Repetition
The same stimulus repeated several times attracts more than one presented only once. Our attention constantly moves from a stimulus to another and the chance a stimulus will get our attention, while our concentration toward another action is waning, is higher if the above stimulus is repeated several times.
Movement
Our eyes are unintentionally attracted by movement, since this makes part of our body defense mechanism.
Internal factors influencing attention
Besides being naturally attracted by stimulus which differ from the others somehow, our attention is also unintentionally influenced by our interests, needs, reasons and expectations.
Needs and interests determine all that will capture our attention, so they influence our perception. For example, if we are hungry we more likely pay attention to stimulus linked to food rather than stimulus related to drinks.
It also happens that the interests and the goals of a indivudual lead him or her to select useful information in the surrounding environment.
Another factor which plays a important role in the perceptive selection is the expectation or the subjective approach. This means (note page 44) “the readiness to react in a certain way to a given situation or a combination of stimulus”. The readiness may be the result of past experience, known or unknown by the individual.
The organisation of perception
Everybody has gone to a concert once in a lifetime, I think and I hope. During a concert we don't hear or see different stimulus representing strong and acute sounds, colours or changes in light. During a concert we hear rhythms and melodies, musicians and instruments.
In short, our perception doesn't consist of passive reception of several stimulus but it is rather a dynamic process.

The Gestalt psychologists themselves demonstrated that (note page 48):
perception involves many different tendencies in the organisation process. These tendencies seldom operate separately and in certain circumstances one may undo another one.
Implications for marketing
Consumers can try to assess the characteristics of a product by using physical indices like the taste, the smell, the dimension and the shape. However, in some cases, the physical differences, which actually exist among competing products, can not overcome the consumer's sensory threshold. In other cases, even if the consumer is able to differentiate, he or she may be not expert enough to understand what are the differences that will bring satisfaction. This means consumers are not able to judge only according to the physical features of the good. Data from various studies are not surprising, indeed scholar Brown (1958) (note page 57) discovered that:
“Housewives, for example, perceived bread in cellophane wrapping as fresher than the one wrapped in paraffin papar which actually was as fresh as the first one"
Since the consumer uses alternative indices while he is chosing a product, the communicator expert needs to run a lot of research to identify what these indices exactly are. This expert always has to keep in mind that perception is a process which is not determined only by the direct experience but it is also influenced by the past of the individual, his learning and actitudes. For this reason it is extremely important to carefully analyse the market before embarking on radical changes in the product's strategy. The expert will analyse the attributes of certain market segments and he will identify the variables acting in opposite directions.
Moreover, the good marketing man has to be sure his strategy will work in a real purchase situation. Marketing scholars have recognised the importance of providing a pleasant image to their products, since they realised the subjective experience involves much more than a simple and rational assessment of the sensory data.
Indeed, today agencies have understood their business image is truly important in ensuring the purchases, particularly when new merchandise come into play. A enterprise has to spend a lot of time and money in creating a reputation of quality and reliability for each of its branded products.
The concept of perception
Perception consists of the selection and the organisation of the sensory data in order to reach a meaningful shape. Perception is influenced not only by the sensory data of the direct experience but also by the past experience, the learning and the actitudes.
Quoting Keith C. Williams, author of the book "Psychology of marketing" (note page 60):
Attention is a crucial factor in relation to what we perceive. External factors implied in the control of the attention are the intensity and the dimension of the stimulus, its position, the contrast, the novelty, the repetition and the movement. These factors may be used in the promotional campaigns to draw consumers' attention.
Attention is also influenced by the interests of individuals, by their needs, reasons and expectations. In general we perceive what we want to perceive. Thanks to a better comprehension of the consumers' needs during the purchase phase, the responsible of marketing is able to come up with more appropriate strategy for his products.
Perceptive processes organise the surrounding world in objects and groups of objects. A good knowledge about the action of these organisational tendencies, as the one given by the Gestal psychologists, can help the responsible of marketing create an appropriate image of his product and draw consumers' attention on the quality of the product in question.
The successful persuasive communication
“People don't buy what you make, they buy why you make it”
(Simon Sinek)
We could sum up the whole message of Simone Sinek in this simple line. Simon Sinek worked in the advertising field but at a certian point of his carreer he was full of doubts and started wondering about his reasons, his leadership and his work. His educational and work experience led him to publish several books and to become one of the more requested speakers, as well as consultant in big agencies as 3m, Disney, KPMG, ecc. Sinek's work allowed a lot of communication professionals to find a innovative approach during all the work phases and to improve the persuasive techniques which help the communication with users.
The innovative idea developed by Sinek consists of inverting the custom, that means: starting by the reason. His idea comes from a careful communication analysis: in fact, he claims business focus their communication on "what" they do and, then, on "how" they do it, and they barely dwell on "why". This communicative structure may seem logical, acceptable and easy to understand but it has big limits.
For a leader or an agency, communicating means persuading, creating a emotional impact and getting closer to the other in order to make him or her listen to our story. For that, it is necessary to invert the scheme and start by "why". The pattern "why - how - what", the so called "Golden circle", causes a bigger impact on our audience or interlocutor because it goes along with the working pattern of our brain.
In fact, biology comes supporting Sinek's claim. The brain is divided into three main areas:
the neocortex, the most external and youngest part of the brain where rational and analytical thoughts are created, it is the language area and corresponds to "what";
the limbic system corresponds to the areas of our feelings, instinctive decisions and our behaviours, these areas have no language skills and Sinke associates them to "how" and "why";
Since the limbic system doesn't have language skills, when we communicate starting by "what" we give our interlocutor the chance to freely interprete what we are telling him. This happens because we give him a very large set of information: characteristic of a product, benefits, data. In this way we can't be sure he got what we want, on the contrary, we risk that his interpretation will be very far from the message we would like to be transmitted.
If we set our communication starting by "why", instead, we address to that brain area which is responsible for the behaviour. In this way we facilitate the understanding of the message which is immediately linked to a concrete and rational behaviour. So words are transformed in material concepts and stick on the interlocutor's mind. More in detail, if we explain to the user why we have done something, he will have the reason and the rational basis to take his own decisions.
How big leaders inspire actions
Sinek's thesis refers to successful leaders as well, like Steve Jobs and Martin Luther King. Wright's brothers started by "why", for this reason they have been among the best communicators in the history.
A glaring example of the effectiveness of the pattern "why - how - what" is evident in the comparison between DELL and Apple, two very important agencies that have different approaches and different stories. Which one of the two agencies has a big communicative power, influence its own destiny and is characterised by a strong leadership and big persuasive skills? If your answer is Apple you are on the right track. Now let's see why this is the correct answer. Dell is a important agency that produces computers since ever but lately it is loosing market. Apple, instead, was born as computers producer as well but it changed over time. It evolved and changed its own communicative style, moving the attention from the product (the computer) to the reason it produces that kind of computer (characterising its brand according to a desirable lifestyle). DELL's communication has always followed a very classical approach, similar to the one used by most of the agencies in the world:
“We produce computers (what we do) and these computers are strong, easy to use and state-of-the-art (how we do it)"
Apple communication, on the other end, has distinguished itself from the beginning because it was totally different:
“We believe in challanges and follow alternative paths (why do it) focusing on semplicity and intuition (how we do it) and for this reason we produce state-of-the-art computers (what we do)"
For that, Apple subverted the communicative style everybody were used to and successed by inspiring and attracting even more users.
Among the several agencies which marked the history like no other, Facebook stands out with others. It was born from a well-defined dream and with very shareable mission: giving everybody the chance to create an accessible, open and connected world.
By applying Sinek's method we can improve the level of persuasion of our communication through channels as websites, texts and social networks. If we adopt the rule "why - how - what" we can transform a simple information in a interesting story to hear, in this way every communication becomes persuasive and effective.
Memories are linked to feelings, for this reason people remember why you make a product more easily than how you make it.
The globalisation, the advanced technology we have available and the standardisation of the production processes made "how" become the same all over the world, even if the production happens in different parts of the planet.
The case study of Apple allows us to understand how important is for a person being able to share a dream, recognise himself in your challange and in the lifestyle you offer. Therefore, it is necessary to learn how to tell about yourself and to choose the right persons who will do that for you: your business is different from the others, your "why" must be told at best, through the correct words and images.

Martin Lindstrom and the purchase behaviours
Behind the current neuromarketing discipline we find some interesting questions, i.e.:
Which brain areas work during the purchase decisions' process?
Is it possible to create communicative models able to anticipate and guide our choices?
The danish scholar Martin Lindstrom provides us a broad overview of this new phenomenon which is called neuromarketing. His first approach to this discipline started by a question which became even more decisive in his work (note page 2 "Neuromarketing. Brain activities and purchase behaviours", Martin Lindstrom, Maggioli Editore, Milan 2009):
“In this broad flourishing of brands we attend today, why only some of them manage to stick on consumers' minds while the others just fade away in the oblivion?"
Lindstrom claims that traditional studies, based on opinion surveys and market reasearch, are not effective in giving an answer. For this reason Martin Lindstrom started going into the neurosscience field. He hoped the brain activitites' test give a clear answer to the question: how do the consumers behave?
For the neuroscience successful brands manage to stick on consumers' minds by stimulating their affectivity. We don't choose a product only by doing rational considerations, other decisive factors are our desires and primary feelings, as the fear and the emphaty, which are placed under the awareness treshold. The emergent discipline of neuromarketing is definitely kindling marketing professionals' enthusiasm. Nevertheless, it also raises concern in consumers because it makes us believe that the human thought can be considered as a knowable and manipulable mechanism. Actually, experts can manipulate it and they can do that efficiently and, even more important, without wasting resources.
Anyway, Lindstrom claims that neuromarketing is only a tool, that means it is not dangerous in itself, all depends on how we use it. On one hand this discipline is a powerful perusasive instrument used by business, on the other one it provides consumers the useful knowledge to guard against marketing

Neuromarketing and the experimental cases
In order to fully understand how neuromarketing works and know its effective potential, we need to take into account the main experimental studies which have been enrolled through the Brain Imaging. Besides one of the most famous experiments, led by Pepsi-Cola, I report the first italian case conducted by Babiloni, Meroni and Soranzo on the topic. Moreover I talk about the study case defined as the "biggest and most revolutonary neuromarketin experiment of the history", namely the one led by Martin Lindstrom, one of most appreciated scholars in the world.
PEPSI and COCA-COLA case studies
In 1975 Pepsi-Cola Company's managers launched with a big wallopp the advertising campaign called "Pepsi Challenge”.
Hundreds of commercial agents placed a table in malls and supermarkets all over the world and offered two anonymous glasses to who stopped by. Then they asked these people to express a preference, one glass contained Pepsi and the other one Coca-Cola. When the agency got the results the managers were very excited, since more than half of volunteers had preferred Pepsi to Coca-Cola. By the way, they were also a little bit perplexed because, if things were like that, they should have ran Coca-Cola off their feet all over the world and, instead, it was not like that. That didn't make sense.
In 2005 Malcolm Gladwell talks about this campaign in its bestseller, "Blink". He states that the Pepsi Challenge campaign was a “Sip Test”; in fact, he noticed that for a single sip people always tend to prefer the sweetest product (in this case Pepsi) but when they drink a entire can they know they are risking to get a sugar rush. For this reason, according to Gladwell, Coca-Cola kept being the leader in the market.
Nevertheless, in 2003 dr. Read Montague, director of the Human Neuroimaging Lab of the Baylor College of Medicine at Houston, resumed the study but, this time, he used the fMRI to measure the brain activity of 67 individuals ("Science is culture: Neuroeconomics and Neuromarketing. Practical Applications and Ethical Concerns.” S.R.A. Belden, Journal of Mind Theory, p.254)
First of all, he asked the volunteers to express their preference between Coca and Pepsi. He noticed that the results corresponded almost perfectly to the ones of the originary experiment: more than half preferred Pepsi and their brains confirmed that while drinking anonymous glasses. In fact, while drinking Pepsi, even if they didn't know which drink was it, these people's brains had a intense activity in the ventral putamen, the area that is stimulated when we are enjoying a taste. All this was quite interesting so long as they got at the second phase, here a fascinating finding has emerged.
They asked the volunteers to taste the two drinks after telling them which one was Pepsi and which one was Coca. The result was that more than half of them during the interview stated they preferred Coca-Cola.
So, during this experiment a important change occured. Two brain areas were busy in a silent competition between rational and emotional thought, and exactly during this moment of uncertainty feelings raised in those who had preferred Pepsi and Coca won.
All the positive associations the volunteers made with Coca-Cola - its history, colours, logo, taste, design, thumping advertising, the pure and inevitable emotionality of the brand's "cococality"– inexorably won the rational preference for Pepsi. Why? Because feelings are the tools our brain use to codify valuable things. A brand that emotonally involves will always win, in any case.
The DAIMLER-CHRYSLER case study
In 2002 the research center of Daimler-Chrysler in Ulm, Germany, used the fMRI technique to analyse people's reaction after they had looked at the images of some cars, among which a Mini Cooper and a Ferrari.
The researchers discovered that when participants saw a picture of a Mini Cooper, a small area became active in the posterior part of the brain, the part that corresponds to the recognition of faces.
The fMRI had identified the Mini Cooper charm's essence: this car was recorded in participants' brains as a lovely face, "it was a nice little person, as a Bambi on the wheels or a Pikachu with a exhaust pipe" ("Neuromarketing. Brain activities and purchase behaviours.”, Martin Lindstrom, Apogeo, p.32)
It is doubtless that baby faces have a powerful effect on our brains.
In a study of the University of Oxford, based on a imaging technique called magnitoencephalographic, the neuroscientist Morten L. Kringelbach asked twelve adults to do an activity at the computer, while baby and adults faces were displayed on a screen close by. Volunteers elaborated the faces in the brain areas normally involved in this kind of activity but all had quicker reactions when they saw a baby face.
In other words, participants' brain identified the baby faces as something special.
Afterward other curious discovers came. Daimler-Chrysler's researchers show the images of 66 different cars to twelve men, always using the fMRI tool. This time, sport cars stimulated the brain area associated to "reward and reinforcement", according to Henrik Walter, psychiatrist and neuroscientis involved in the experiment. Well, what is the most satisfying thing for men in general? Sex.
Apparently, the male subjects involved in this study subconsciously thought that to attract women they needed the low bodywork, the turbot and the chrome trim of a sport car.
Walter has even taken a step further and explained that exactly as "female birds, that reject males with little plumage and prefer the ones with bigger and more colorful plumage because the lenght and the sheen of a male peacock is directly related to his strenght, virility and social status" ("Neuromarketing. Brain activities and purchase behaviours.”, Martin Lindstrom, Apogeo, p.32) so women would prefer men with a flashy sport car.
4.8 Martin Lindstrom's experiments
Martin Lindstrom is one of the most appreciated experts of marketing in the world. He aims at sharing his methodology through conferences and consultancies.
His study began in 2004 and it lasted about three years. Normally a researcher makes a hypothesis, analyses it and then designs a model to prove it. Finally the experiment will be ready. Lindstrom actually started by some hypothesis based on what he had learnt and observed over twenty years as business consultant for the design of longlasting brands. One of these hypothesis concerned the dissuasive writings on cigarette packets that, indeed, incentive to smoke. Another hypothesis was about the link between sport and religion. Anyway, Lidstrom took all these hypothesis, did some research and then tested them using the neuroimaging techiniques.
4.8.1 Experiment n.1
DISSUASIVE LABELS ON CIGARETTE PACKETS
It is believed that warnings and images, even gory, showed in plain sight on the cigarette packets can make people stop smoking.
Despite these images, it is estimated that a third of the men in the world keeps smoking.
Smokers are selectively blind to the dissuasive labels?
Lindstrom tries to answer this question through this experiment ("Neuromarketing. Brain activities and purchase behaviours.”, Martin Lindstrom, Apogeo, p.9) which involved 32 smokers. The volunteers were subjected first to a questionnaire and a interview, then the scientists monitored their brain with the fMRI technology.
The smokers stayed under the scanner for about one hour and in the meanwhile a set of images of dissuasive labels were projected on a screen, one after the other and from all angles. During this projection, the subject had to express his will to smoke by pressing the so-called “button box” after every image. The results said that the dissuasive labels didn't have any effects on their will to smoke, on the contrary, they stimulated a brain area called “the centre of desire”. This area is formed by specialised neurons that become active when we desire something and, once it is stimulated, it requires even higher doses to be satisfied.
By the way during the interview the most part of the volunteers said that the labels worked. They claimed that not to hide the shame they felt for what the smoke caused on their bodies, but because they felt guilty for the fact these labels stimulated the desire in their brain, it is just that they didn't manage to establish the difference between the two things.
4.8.2 Experiment n.5
SENSORY BRANDING: THE SENSE OF SMELL AND THE NOKIA CASE STUDY
Today we are visually hyper-stimulated. The more stimulated we are the harder drawing our attention will be.
The sense of sight is doubtless a crucial factor in our purchase behaviour but in a lot of cases it is not that important as we have always thought. The senses of smell and the hearing, instead, are surely more powerful than it has always been told.
The truth is that images become more effective and memorable when they are matched to another sense, this phenomenon is called Sensory Branding.
Almost everybody know the famous and unmistakable ringtone that characterises Nokia phones. When these devices have been put in the market, the standard ringtone suddenly became popular, especially because it was the first recognisable melody and since then it became viral. We might think this is a benefit for the brand and Lindstrom led this experiment to understand if a characteristic sound, like the Nokia ringtone, can effectively make a brand more attractive.
The study involved four different categories: telephones, softwares, airlines and differetnt images of London. Each category matched with a specific sound. They showed the volunteers ten images per each brand and also images that din't match with any specific sounds.
Then they insert the musical part: for the benchmark generic brand there were random ringtones and a Bach's piece. They started by showing the single brands, ten minutes per each, during this time volunteers first hear the sounds and saw the images in different moments and then they saw images and hear the sounds at the same time. This sequence has been repeated five times in a row and the volunteers were asked to express their preferences for the images, the sounds or the combination images-sounds together by pressing a button.
The results highlighted that sounds and images showed simultaneously were perceived in a better way.
Consumers' attention raises when they hear a characteristic melody and see a recognisable image at the same time. Therefore they remember more what they hear and see when the logo and the melody are shown simultaneously.
Nevertheless, a brand went awfully wrong: Nokia failed the sound test. Volunteers had positively assessed the images of Nokia phones but the fMRI results showed a negative reaction to the ringtone. Indeed, just hearing that sound canceled all the positive feelings the brain created when the individual had seen the images of the phones.
After hearing the ringtone, the volunteer indicated a greater preference for the images that didn't have any link to the ones showing Nokia phones.
The ring brought strong negavive feelings which completely warded off the subjects from the brand.
The problem with the Nokia ringtone, according to Martin Lindstrom, was that people started to not stand that sound anymore. Their brain associated that melody to the intrusion, the interruption and a sense of annoyance, despite it had became familiar.
Reflections on the neuromarketing
The main obstacle for the agencies that are keen to experiment this field is definitely the cost of the tools and the equipment necessary for the readings of the brain activities.
Moreover, business which search for a neuromarketing consultancy don't have the knowledge to verify the quality of the results. Indeed, the most of the marketing responsibles don't have the training yet to assess the reliability of these techniques.
Catching the emotional reactions and discovering the deepest purchase mechanisms and the consumer's thought about the brand, for many means a threat. In fact, that could damage the autonomy and individuality of the consumers.
There are a few basic rules to take into account when we talk about neuromarketing and want to carefully study the consumer. These rules say that:
We need to use emotions more than reflections. The use of the emotional register opens up the doors of the uncoscious. These are useful at the moment of implanting ideas, fears, concerns and inducing behaviours.
We need to know people better than they know themselves. Thanks to the collaboration of disciplines as psychology, biology and neurology today we know the human being more than ever and better than he does. This means that in most cases our system has a control on the individual greater than the one he exercises on himself.

Source text - Italian La presente pubblicazione è una delle azioni previste dalle azioni di visibilità dal progetto Investire nell’Educazione per un futuro di pace nei Territori Palestinesi CUP n. E26G515000440007, cofinanziato dalla Regione Emilia-Romagna. Il progetto prevedeva il confronto con le insegnati degli Asili e gli animatori “ young leader” dei Centri Estivi del Centro palestinese Burj Laq Laq (Il Fenicottero), ubicato nella città vecchia di Gerusalemme.
Le esperienze in Italia e all'estero di UISP e della sua ONG Peace Games, in particolare proprio a Gerusalemme presso il campo profughi di Shu'fat , nella formazione, nei Servizi Sociali, nelle attività nei Centri estivi, negli Asili è stata sempre coniugata con la riflessione sul gioco e l'attività motoria, attraverso la metodologia consolidata ma sperimentale dello Sport Pertutti in Italia
La metodologia dello Sport Pertutti utilizzata all'estero non è stata ancora descritta se non in seminari interni alla UISP tra formatori ed espatriati volontari delle missioni all'estero.
La filosofia UISP precede la metodologia orientata alla prassi e alla soluzione di situazioni concrete. Questa filosofia prevede lo sport come strumento educativo di sviluppo delle persone nelle comunità e come veicolo politico di comunicazione e trasformazione culturale. Sono parte integrante della filosofia i valori del rispetto di tutti: compagni e avversari di gioco che non sono mai nemici, direttori di gioco e regole create e condivise, adattate a contesti personali, sociali, ambientali.
Queste esperienze di pratiche sportive educano alla vita quotidiana, anche non sportiva, dove sono sempre presenti insieme autonomia e disciplina, cooperazione e competizione.
Le azioni in Italia e all'estero sono sempre prioritariamente azioni formative di competenze cognitive, relazionali e didattiche di dirigenti, educatori, animatori e atleti o di ristrutturazione e di allestimento di spazi sportivi , ludici e di aggregazione sociale, sociali ed educativi oppure ancora l'acquisto o la donazione di materiali e attrezzature ludiche e sportive.
I cambiamenti nel mondo o nella attività quotidiane, di qualunque natura, comportano sempre nuove opportunità e nuovi rischi.
L'Unione Italiana Sport Pertutti (UISP) aveva creato nel 1990 per svolgere le attività di cooperazione e solidarietà sportiva all'estero una propria Organizzazione Non Governativa (ONG) di volontari denominata “Peace Games”.
Dopo 25 anni di progetti molti dei quali dal 2000 in Palestina: a Hebron, Gerusalemme, Gaza, UISP ha deciso di sperimentare una diversa organizzazione e strategia delle proprie azioni sportive educative all’estero.
Punti di forza e di debolezza del volontariato in questi anni sono stati analizzati con puntualità, fino a raggiungere la consapevolezza che la cooperazione sportiva internazionale non sono le attività sportive di UISP all'estero.
Sono quindi state costruite alleanze con ONG professionali con esperienze e presenti nei paesi di intervento.
Sono state sperimentate progetti comuni con ONG con la condivisione di obiettivi educativi ludici, motori e sportivi in Bosnia, Palestina, Senegal, Libano.
Dopo anni di sperimentazione, era necessario individuare una ONG con orizzonti educativi, anche non sportivi, compatibile con i valori della UISP. con la quale condividere gli stessi valori e strategie.
Il CISP (Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo di Popoli), ci è sembrata l'ONG adeguata con cui integrare in modo sinergico le attività educative e ludico-sportive, scolastiche ed extrascolastiche
Il CISP, nato nel 1983 a Roma, con sede regionale in Emilia-Romagna, opera in 30 paesi, compresi quelli europei e l'Italia, dove promuove iniziative di politica culturale e promozione della solidarietà internazionale ed è iscritta al Registro degli enti e associazioni che svolgono attività a favore degli immigrati presso il Ministero del Lavoro e delle Politiche Sociali, come UISP.
Le azioni all'estero di UISP sono sempre state coordinate con le attività in Italia all'estero tanto nei progetti di formazione interni come “Lontano da dove ?” nel 2011, quanto negli eventi pubblici quali i “Mondiali Antirazzisti”, giunti alla XXI edizione nel 2017.
Il Comitato UISP Emilia Romagna ha messo disposizione la i propri formatori con esperienze in Palestina e nelle azioni di visibilità in Italia dalle manifestazioni sportive all’educazione alla mondialità nelle scuole.
CISP ha messo disposizione la sua consolidata rete in Italia e all'estero e, come capofila del progetto, la sua competenza tecnica con il proprio personale dedicato per la progettazione, la gestione e la rendicontazione.
Si è scelto di comune accordo con CISP in fase progettuale , di pubblicare un manuale sulla metodologia sperimentata all'estero dello Sport Pertutti da UISP per diffondere la conoscenza tra i nostri associati e gli aspiranti volontari nella cooperazione sportiva.
Per comprendere le esperienze abbiamo ritenuto necessario inquadrare contesti e riferimenti culturali che guidano le azioni e attività non conosciute fuori dal perimetro degli associati UISP.
Un ringraziamento a Gian Luca Falcitelli, responsabile paese del CISP e Ada Carafini responsabile in loco del progetto, per la pazienza nell’ adattarsi alle esigenze e ai tempi dei nostri volontari.
Sport e Sviluppo
L'idea di sviluppo descrive una visione teleologica che anticipa in potenza quanto si realizzerà in atto successivamente a conclusione del processo.
La parola associata ad altre come sviluppo biologico, l sviluppo della specie, sviluppo sociale, sviluppo economico, paesi in via di sviluppo, hanno in comune solo un'epistemologia finalistica.
Le declinazioni del concetto sono differenti. Più vicino ad una descrizione naturalistica lo sviluppo biologico ben esemplificato dal'enigma della Sfinge nel mito di Edipo. Più un costruzione teorica, un modello non privo di pregiudizi di valore, gli altri sviluppi.
Infatti il modello per stadi successivi dello sviluppo unidimensionale, lineare e progressivo da Morgan a Comte a Rostow nelle scienze umane è ancora punto di riferimento di molte pubblicazioni ed organizzazioni pubbliche e private internazionali.
Tuttavia dopo la pubblicazione di “What now ? Another development and international cooperation” nel 1975, si sono affermati modelli multidimensionali che considerano più piani di sviluppo: bisogni di base, autorealizzazione personale, ecosviluppo.
Nostri paradigmi di riferimento sono il metodo dialettico di Marx e il metodo ecologico di Morin che analizzano lo sviluppo in modo non deterministico e riconducono ad unità dinamica le tendenze del divenire nella Natura e nella Società, il tempo ciclico ripetitivo come nel caso delle risorse rinnovabili e la progressione irreversibile come nel caso dell’entropia.
E indispensabile partire dai fondamenti: eco sviluppo o sviluppo sostenibile, sviluppo equo-solidale o auto centrato, sviluppo democratico o partecipativo rimandano a teorie che solo in parte sono sovrapponibili e che spesso si escludono.
Lo sport come tutte le attività umane ha un funzionamento nel presente, una storia passata e tendenze di sviluppo future che dipendono sia dalle pratiche reali che dai valori espliciti ed impliciti a a monte delle pratiche.
Non lo sviluppo dello sport, ma lo sport per lo sviluppo è il nostro focus che rimanda a filosofie e approcci operativi (prassi) differenti :
1) lo sport promosso delle organizzazioni religiose legato all'uso del tempo libero che confina con l’animazione sociale, come momento per socializzare valori comuni, comunque successivo o complementare agli interventi per fornire beni e servizi di prima necessità o transmateriali come l'educazione religiosa;
2) lo sport tecnocratico che teorizza interventi tecnici neutrali ed imparziali, che accentua quindi trasferimenti di procedure e tecniche ritenute universali per l'apprendimento di discipline sportive ed esporta canoni codificati peri impianti e praticanti: genere, età, abilità;
3) lo sport imperialista che esporta modelli di gestione e discipline sportive espressione di società specifiche per trasferire valori e comportamenti “avanzati” in società arretrate, dove coltiva e preleva forza lavoro sportiva da importare a basso costo in patria;
4) lo sport per tutti che si propone di realizzare in condivisione dopo confronti ripetuti nel tempo la costruzione di procedure e tecniche appropriate dalle comunità del paese di intervento con al centro sempre e comunque la persona concreta.
Naturalmente gli interventi, sopratutto all'estero, possono essere combinati tra loro, tenuto conto tanto della babele delle filosofie sportive dell'organizzazioni che intervongono, quanto dalle biografie dei formatori reclutati, attivi sul campo.
Lo sport come strumento di sviluppo umano e coesione delle comunità è diventato anche un focus di diverse organizzazioni internazionali tra tutte l’Unione Europea( White paper of Sport, 2007) e le Nazioni Unite (UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace, 2008).
Secondo le Nazioni Unite (2003) l’intervento sportivo in ambito cooperativo può risultare efficace in quattro campi
- Economico
- Sociale
- Ambientale
- Volontariato
che possono anche essere descritti come altrettante forme di capitale: capitale produttivo, capitale relazionale, capitale naturale, capitale umano.
Nel campo economico può generare crescita economica produttiva diretta per le attrezzature, l’abbigliamento e l’impiantistica sportiva. Può generare anche occupazione anche nella gestione e nell’erogazione dei servizi sportivi.
Nel campo sociale può svolgere diverse funzioni per promuovere comportamenti desiderabili: la prevenzione nel campo della salute, l’educazione dei cittadini al rispetto delle gerarchie e delle regole, la prevenzione devianze e l’integrazione di gruppi vulnerabili e svantaggiati.
Nel campo Ambientale può favorire la conoscenza del territorio e la sua salvaguardia, l’uso sostenibile di spazi pubblici, urbani e rurali, dedicati o utilizzati per la pratica sportiva.
Nel campo del volontariato può incentivare lo sviluppo umano e professionale, soprattutto tra i giovani, in termini di esperienze di autoformazione e di acquisizione di competenze, complementari e non sostitutivi di lavoro nei servizi sportivi
Il ruolo sociale dello sport
Nei documenti internazionali sullo Sport e nella letteratura specialistica, sono presenti sempre affermazioni sulle virtù terapeutiche della pratica sportiva, quasi una panacea per tutti i mali delle nostre società.
Qualsiasi organizzazione sportiva dichiara la propria pretesa e competenza come mezzo per agire positivamente sull'educazione degli uomini, nell'arco dell'esistenza: dalla età evolutiva alla quarta età. Si dice che:
- lo Sport educa all'apprendimento di regole di vita propedeutiche al lavoro. Trasmette i valori della società e previene comportamenti devianti;
- lo Sport educa alla conoscenza del proprio corpo, alle relazioni competitive e cooperative con l'altro, alla gestione dei conflitti, ad accettare la sconfitta, al rispetto dell'autorità competente, all'identità di gruppo, all'integrazione e l'inserimento sociale di diversamente abili, tossicomani, reclusi, migranti, rifugiati, profughi ed in generale delle minoranze escluse;
- lo Sport, abitua alla pratica di sani stili di vita che associati ad abitudini alimentari, porta benefici per le patologie come il diabete, l'ipertensione, le cardiopatie, le malattie respiratorie, l'obesità, i dismorfismi, contrasta all'invecchiamento, l'Alzheimer, il Parkinson, l'artrite, l'artrosi, l'osteoporosi, i tumori;
- lo sport praticato liberamente come svago funziona da antistress oppure praticato con disciplina quotidiana in palestra contribuisce all'autostima per il corpo estetico, socialmente apprezzato.
Parliamo in ogni caso dello sport praticato e non di quello spettacolistico, appannaggio di spettatori sportivi seduti..
Lo sport è quindi un concetto non univoco.
Lo Sport identifica, inoltre, pratiche diverse che includono lo sport agonistico, dilettantistico o professionistico, lo sport non competitivo, amatoriale o ludico, organizzato e auto organizzato.
Ma lo Sport non veicola solo effetti sociali positivi.
Gli esempi storici dei regimi totalitari dimostrano che lo sport può essere anche strumento di controllo del comportamento sociale con la nazionalizzazione delle masse o con la costituzione dei corpi sportivi militari o con lo sviluppo delle tifoserie ultrà.
Lo Sport è strumento di riproduzione sociale di comportamenti culturali stereotipati nella arbitraria divisione delle pratiche del genere umano tra sport maschili e femminili, nella separazione tra abili e disabili, nella distinzione per categorie di età e cittadinanza.
Lo Sport replica la divisione sociale e tecnica del lavoro: lavoro direttivo e lavoro esecutivo, lavoro intellettuale e lavoro manuale, produttività del lavoro con la comparazione dei tempi dei record.
Lo Sport è quindi utilizzato anche per perpetuare l'ordine e la struttura sociale esistente e può diventare un altro oppio dei popoli Lo Sport è dunque una pratica sociale ed uno strumento bifronte, come tutte le pratiche e gli strumenti sociali che riverberano la dicotomia tra valore d'uso e valore di scambio delle merci delle società capitaliste.
Lo Sport e i valori
Nelle società complesse a comunicazione pervasiva, la persona è costantemente influenzata da molteplici agenzie educative: la famiglia, la scuola, l'istituzione religiosa che operano disgiunte tra loro, spesso con messaggi e pratiche contradditorie. Esite in questa cacofonia un pensiero dominate che è padrone dei significati sociali dello sport.
Pertanto è sempre presente il rischio anche nelle attività motorie e sportive dell'esclusione della persona meno abile o che appartiene minoranze stigmatizzate.
Lo Sport trasmette valori ed è quindi a pieno titolo un'agenzia educativa. Attraverso la pratica uomini e donne sono esposti a modelli di ruolo e comportamento, veicolati dagli istruttori, già dall'eta evolutiva.
Il bambino apprende la morale della società di appartenenza mediata dall'adulto dotato di autorità ( genitori, fratelli o sorelle maggiori, istruttore sportivo, insegnante) anche nel gioco motorio e nella disciplina sportiva.
La funzione socializzante della pratica motoria e sportiva è presente a tutte le età, ma in misura maggiore nell'età compresa tra i 6 e gli 11 anni
L'attività motoria e sportiva hanno la capacità di coinvolgimento nella situazione ludica, per l'impatto emotivo legato al piacere della scoperta di nuove esperienze, alla coscienza di sè corporea, alla percezione e consapevolezza del proprio progresso nelle performance e nel controllo autonomo delle proprie abilità.
Queste esperienze ripetute sedimentano l'identificazione individuale e di gruppo, con la capacità di replicare autonomamente in altri contesti gli apprendimenti motori appresi.
Nella pratica condivisa dello spazio e del tempo e delle regole, il movimento e lo sport sono fattori di socializzazione e ri-socializzazione di comportamenti comunicativi e ruoli, differenti da quelli occupati in altri contesti sociali dove sono premiati più gli apprendimenti logico-cognitivi, relazionali, mentre il corpo viene disciplinato dal silenzio e dall'immobilità.
L'educazione motoria e sportiva non quindi solo rafforzamento degli schemi motori di base e disciplina dei gesti tecnici, è conoscenza di sè e dell'altro, è sviluppo cognitivo, relazionale, morale.
Un'altro Sport è possibile
Nella società contemporanea si inserisce la proposta filosofica e pedagogica sportiva della UISP, nella sua evoluzione da Unione Italiana Sport Popolare a Unione Italiana Sport Pertutti.
La UISP nasce a Bologna nella primavera del 1948 dal Fronte della Gioventù (organizzazione clandestina dei giovani antifascisti, nata nel novembre 1943), mentre nel settembre 1948 sempre a Bologna si svolge il primo congresso nazionale. Nell'XI congresso a Perugia nel dicembre del 1990 la UISP muta nome.
Lo Sport Popolare aveva come obiettivo l'inclusione nella pratica sportiva delle classi sociali escluse a causa del reddito o della mancanza di tempo o impianti utilizzabili nel dopo lavoro.
Lo Sport Pertutti più universale ha come obiettivo l'inclusione nella pratica sportiva di tutti a tutte le età, senza distinzione di genere o cittadinanza, a prescindere dalle abilità e condizioni fsiche e psichiche che vogliono praticare attività motorie e sportive
Lo Sport Popolare si rivolgeva a minori, adulti, uomini e donne per garantire l'accesso alla pratica sportiva, a campionati di promozione sportiva, agonistici e amatoriali ed aveva comunque al centro della propria proposta sportiva la disciplina sportiva.
Lo Sport Pertutti mette al centro della propria proposta sportiva la persona, anche inventando nuove opportunità per la pratica motoria che desidera svolgere.
Lo Sport Popolare chiedeva l'accesso agli impianti di tutti i cittadini sportivi alle stesse condizioni degli sportivi d’elitè. Chiedeva di praticare discipline sportive già codificate in spazi attrezzati espressamente dedicati .
Lo Sport Pertutti trasforma in impianto sportivo qualunque spazio pubblico per chiunque voglia fare sport e vuole diffondere giochi e sport di tutti i paesi.
Il parco, il fiume,gli spazi verdi, le piazze, la strada, gli spazi urbani. Il territorio è un alfabetiere motorio, dove fare esperienze motorie di discipline già codificate modificando le regole o da codificare inventando le regole.
Il cambio di nome è stato anche un cambio di paradigma culturale, ha comportato la riorganizzazione delle discipline, dei loro regolamenti e una nuova formazione di istruttori e dirigenti della UISP.
La rivoluzione culturale è stata vinta con l'adesione di 1.300.000 associati di tutte le età, abilità, cittadinanze e condizioni socio-economiche e la diffusione della pratica sportiva non competitiva.
Oggi UISP ha propria sede nazionale a Roma e le sedi a livello provinciale, regionale in tutta Italia per promuovere ed organizzare campionati, progetti, eventi..
I campionati si svolgono come nelle federazioni sportive a più livelli, per sesso ed età nelle discipline: acqua (nuoto, subacquea, canottaggio, canoa, kayak, surf,vela), atletica, attività equestri attività motoristiche (automobilismo e motociclismo), baseball, giochi ( 15 settori per 75 discipline), calcio, ciclismo, danza, discipline orientali (20 discipline), ginnastiche(10 discipline tra cui attività circensi), neve (montagna, pattinaggio, sci), pallacanestro, pallavolo, pattinaggio a rotelle (5 discipline), rugby, tennis, tiro con l'arco.
Di particolare rilievo per la formula le camminate podistiche settimanale, ormai replicate da tutti, a cui partecipano insieme i praticanti senza divisioni di genere, età, abilità con classifiche finali separate e premi per tutti.
UISP lavora su progetti sociali sportivi nazionali: 1) negli istituti di pena, maschili e femminili, minorili ed adulti, con i detenuti; 2) nelle scuole con programmi di sport e alimentazione, educazione alle differenze di genere, educazione alla mondialità; 3) con programmi contro il doping nelle associazioni sportive associate; 4) con la proposta di gruppi di cammino e sani stili di vita per cittadini contro la sedentarietà; 4) con la proposta di sport destrutturati negli spazi urbani per adolescenti; 5) con sport adattati per diverse abilità fisiche e psichiche; 6) con programmi di gestione dello sport sostenibile nelle manifestazioni sportive; 7) con attività di cooperazione sportiva internazionale e turismo responsabile.
UISP promuove tutti gli anni manifestazioni nazionali della durata da uno a quattro giorni: Giocagin ( danza, pattinaggio, ginnastiche, arti marziali), Neveuisp (sci), Vivicittà (podismo), Bicincittà (ciclismo), Mondiali Antirazzisti (calcio, rugby, basket, pallavolo, cricket per cittdini dal mondo), Summer Basket (pallacanestro 3c3), Matti per il calcio(disagio psichico), Diamoci una mossa (sport e alimentazione).
Queste diverse e molteplici attività sono la realizzazione della filosofia dello sport pertutti che UISP definisce:
- un diritto ad una nuova qualità della vita quotidiana;
- un bene che interessa la salute, l'educazione, la socialità;
- un nuovo diritto di cittadinanza che si legittima in base a valori che sono riconducibili alla partecipazione e non al primato, all'etica del risultato dello sport di prestazione assoluta.
- una filosofia dell'inclusione non fondata su attitudini e potenzialità individuali selettive ma sulla pratica di tutti a prescindere dalle capacità, che non rinuncia a proporre sport di competizione e monosportivi, ma ha come riferimento prioritario la pratica diffusa nelle comunità e le attività multisportive.
- un Altro Sport che chiede l'attività motoria come servizio per tutte le persone al'interno di politiche pubbliche di welfare.
- un'eguale cittadinanza sportiva per donne e uomini, di diverse culture , lingue, ideologie, provenienze, nazionalità.
- un' eguale opportunità di vita per tutte le persone
La metodologia dello Sport Per Tutti
L’eta evolutiva
Nel corso dell’età evolutiva dai 0 ai 18 anni lo sviluppo motorio endogeno si incrocia prima con l’attività motoria e poi con l’attività sportiva.
La prima è spontanea: dai riflessi innati del lattante al gioco con il proprio corpo. La seconda è culturalmente condizionata dal luogo di nascita e dai valori familiari e comunitari fin dai primi giochi (solo nel mondo globalizzato con la produzione seriale i giochi sono diventati potenzialmente gli stessi in tutti i paesi, mentre lo sport moderno lo è dalla fondazione delle moderne Olimpiadi nel 1896 a Londra).
Nelle organizzazioni che promuovono attività ludiche o sportive per l’età evolutiva, le stesse vengono proposte considerazione dell’età.
Fino ai 5 anni vengono proposte esperienze motorie non occasionali nella forma del gioco (euristico) di scoperta, libero o guidato, a spazi, ambienti, “attrezzatura” ludici con stimoli diversi (superfici lisce o scabre; piane o inclinate; forme regolari o frattali; materiali caldi o freddi;…) che sono esperite globalmente attraverso le esperienze corporee del bambino che sperimenta globalmente tutte le funzioni:cognitive, linguistiche, motorie, emotive, affettive.
Dai 5 ai 7 anni vengono proposte attività motorie di base multiple per favorire lo sviluppo delle capacità percettivo -cinetiche e rafforzare gli schemi motori di base, con l’assunzione di ulteriori informazioni tattili, visive, acustiche, vestibolari e cinestetiche
Dagli 8 ai 12 anni vengono proposte attività presportive e polisportive per lo sviluppo delle capacità coordinative prima generali e poi coordinative specifiche e delle abilità motorie.
Nell’età dai 6 ai 12 si rafforzano le capacità coordinative che aiutano a regolare e produrre ed organizzare i movimenti come: l’equilibrio statico e dinamico, il controllo motorio, il ritmo, la capacità di adattamento, la destrezza, il tempismo, la capacità di apprendimento motorio, la capacità di orientamento, la capacità di anticipazione e reazione, la capacità di combinazione di movimenti.
Nell’età tra i 12 e 14 anni si introducono le conoscenze delle tecniche di base delle discipline sportive con programmi di allenamento in prevalenza multilaterali il cui scopo è sviluppare le abilità che migliorano tutte le qualità fisiche. Il gesto sarà sperimentato con attrezzi di diverso peso e dimensione, con variazioni topologiche del gesto (alto, basso; lungo, corto; dentro, fuori;…), con cambi di situazione improvvisi.
Solo a partire dai 15 anni comincerà la specializzazione sportiva con il progressivo incremento delle capacità condizionali (forza, resistenza, rapidità), l’apprendimento delle tecniche e tattiche di disciplina sportiva, la specializzazione.
Viene dato particolare rilievo allo sviluppo affettivo/emotivo legato al piacere e alle relazione con gli altri: piacere di giocare, piacere dello sforzo, piacere di competere, piacere di collaborare. Le prestazioni con il loro confronto e la loro misurabilità oggettiva determinano lo sviluppo dell’autostima in caso di successo oppure della svalutazione in caso di risultato non corrispondente alle proprie aspettative. Un lavoro importante dell’educatore sportivo è fare comprendere che:
1) non ci sono solo prestazioni assolute, ma anche prestazioni relative dalle quali possiamo ricavare soddisfazioni potendo verificare autonomamente i nostri miglioramenti
2) l’etica della sconfitta ovvero quando ci siamo impegnati con tutte le nostre capacità e qualcuno è stato migliore di noi nell’ esprimere le proprie, dobbiamo riconoscere il suo valore e anche riconoscere insieme il nostro, perché solo la nostra sconfitta ha permesso la vittoria di altri.
In ogni periodo dell’età evolutiva: prima infanzia (0-2), seconda infanzia(2-6), fanciullezza (6-10), preadolescenza (10-14), adolescenza (indicativamente 14-18), il tecnico UISP declina i valori e dei metodi associativi.
Il Metodo
Nei corsi di formazione per formatori UISP in coerenza con la filosofia sportiva che mette al centro la persona e non la disciplina sportiva, viene proposta la metodologia per gli apprendimenti motori dell’approccio obliquo.
L’approccio obliquo si fonda non sulla consegna del compito da eseguire uguale per tutti, ma sulla situazione e sullo stimolo con più soluzioni possibili e strategie di partecipazione personali per raggiungere un obiettivo motorio.
Mettere la persona al centro della proposta significa dedicare attenzione e tempo ad ognuno.
L’osservazione dei comportamenti motori diventa un momento fondamentale insieme al processo di retroazione, per modificare strategie e proposte in modo sperimentale.
Pertanto l’istruttore UISP non è solo un tecnico di disciplina, ma un educatore che deve proporsi di non lasciare indietro nessuno nel percorso personale al proprio sviluppo motorio.
L’educatore UISP è anche un “ricercatore” sperimentale delle attività motorie e sportive che deve sapere codificare, rendere comunicabili ad altri, consolidare in sapere replicabile.
La conoscenza degli sport olimpici, delle attività di nuova generazione come gli sport della glisse e acrobatici, la formazione e la ricerca sui giochi e gli sport tradizionali, italiani e stranieri, , sono oggi il patrimonio associativo diffuso in modo ineguale tra gli educatori sportivi della UISP.
La combinazione di sapere “accademico”, ricerca interdisciplinare, metodologia sperimentata in Italia e nuove metodologie sperimentate in altri paesi, nel deserto, nelle aree di conflitto, nei campi profughi deve essere arricchita dalla conoscenza non solo ludico motoria di altre culture, ma anche dalla conoscenza dei loro usi e costumi e dalle rappresentazioni della realtà: religiose e politiche storici ed attuali.
Nelle esperienze con le diaspore straniere in Italia e nel contesto internazionale vengono sperimentati codici di culture differenti.
Non si tratta solo di un atto banale come la lingua, ma anche di valori spirituali religiosi, di valori materiali come i rituali nelle relazioni di saluto, nell’abbigliamento, nel cibo e di dispositivi di regolamentazione dei rapporti uomo/donna, adulto/ minore, autorità/ obbedienza, … A questi deve essere aggiunto lo specifico codice culturale corporeo dell’etnomotricità.
Le pratiche corporee sono profondamente influenzate dal tipo di cultura nella quale nascono e si sviluppano.
L'etnomotricità è lo studio delle attività motorie dal punto di vista del loro rapporto con la cultura e l'ambiente sociale.
Gli studi di Parlebas hanno mostrato come la struttura degli sport affermatisi nella società occidentale sia fondata essenzialmente sul modello del duello , individuale e di gruppo, simmetrico o dissimetrico, di tipo cooperativo, individualista o paradossale.
Non accade sempre così per i giochi e sport di altre culture che fanno parte del patrimonio tradizionale extraeuropeo.
Gioco e Sport
Gioco e Sport non coincidono nelle definizioni e nella prassi ed è interessante come nella prima lezioni che proponiamo all’estero nei corsi per animatori ed educatori sportivi, proprio su questa distinzione, emergano dall’immaginario di classi di allievi diverse, anche dello stesso paese, definizioni diverse della relazione.
I giochi e gli sport non sono quindi solo espressioni caratteristiche delle diverse concezioni del mondo delle società in cui sono in uso, ma in ogni società l’appartenenza a classi sociali ed il possesso di capitale cognitivo, comporta diverse valutazioni pregiudizi e giudizi.
Nelle nostre formazioni utilizziamo come orientamento gli studi ludosofici e le classificazioni di Parlebas e Callois.
Nell’analizzare le pratiche ludiche e sportive Parlebas delinea i tratti distintivi della logica interna che orienta i comportamenti del giocatore con gli altri giocatori, con lo spazio, il tempo, gli oggetti in contrapposizione alla logica esterna individuale o di gruppo, che risente dei condizionamenti legati all’età, al sesso, alla cultura e alla classe sociale del giocatore o dei giocatori.
La sua definizione della struttura del gioco e dello sport sarebbe incompleta senza una definizione del gioco e delle categorie nelle quali inquadrare le diverse tipologie di attività ludiche e sportive.
Premesso che Callois definisce il gioco come un’attività:
Libera: il giocatore non può essere obbligato a partecipare;
Separata: dai limiti temporali e spaziali della quotidianità;
Incerta: svolgimento e risultato non sono decisi a priori;
Improduttiva: non produce beni, servizi e ricchezza;
Regolata: da regole che sospendono le leggi ordinarie;
Fittizia: consapevole della sua irrealtà;
classifica i giochi e gli sport in base a quattro categorie:
Giochi di competizione (agon):
attività di abilità finalizzata a vincere sia fisiche che mentali
Giochi di azzardo (alea):
attività nei quali fattore primario è la fortuna
Giochi di simulacro (mimicry):
attività di simulazione
Giochi di vertigine (ilinx):
attività dove si sperimentano sensazioni estreme di vertigine
Le quattro categorie possono essere compresenti nella medesima attività ludica e sportiva come ad esempio il poker nel quale si compete per la vincita giocando con abilità le combinazioni di carte disponibili, si dipende dal caso non conoscendo le carte degli avversari, si simula come di avere carte migliori di quelle che si ha in mano , si prova ebbrezza nel rischio come nel continuare a giocare al limite.
Una diversa analisi deve essere fatto per la definizione di sport rispetto al gioco per il contesto nel quale si realizza come fatto sociale.
La prima differenza riguarda il fatto che il giocatore di un gioco può sospendere la propria partecipazione in ogni momento se solo, con una negoziazione se gioca con altri giocatori che non condividono la sua scelta. In caso di non composizione de conflitto il giocatore che defeziona sarà considerato un guastafeste, mentre nel corso di una competizione sportiva anche la procedura del ritiro è codificato
Una seconda differenza è che i giocatori di un gioco possono prendere accordi per derogare dalle regole del gioco stesso, mentre nelle competizioni sportive e nei giochi “sportivizzati”, anche mentali come ad esempio gli scacchi, non è possibile.
La violazione della regola è vista come una scorrettezza che deve essere sanzionata dal giudice di gara.
Si riproduce nello sport l’universo sociale che nel gioco è tendenzialmente assente.
Naturalmente si possono “ludicizzare” anche gli sport derogando interamente o parzialmente da regole e sanzioni e riducendo l’attività unicamente ad un confronto di abilità tecniche “normali” o adattate come ad esempio le partite di calcio dei Mondiali Antirazzisti UISP che si giocano senza l’arbitro e dove possono giocare persone senza distinzione di genere ed età.
Sviluppare la consapevolezza della distinzione tra attività ludica e attività sportiva degli educatori che si occupano di formare non solo i corpi ma anche le menti di giocatori e atleti, non serve per definire i ruoli ma è uno strumento di lavoro per organizzare attività conformi ad un obiettivo.

Sport Per Tutti + Cooperazione Internazionale = ?
Le nostre esperienze didattiche quindicinali in Medio Oriente, in Sahara e in Bosnia nella formazione ludica e sportiva di animatori ed educatori sportivi si integra e forse estende il perimetro della metodologia dello Sport Pertutti.
Ripercorriamo in sintesi tutti i nostri passaggi standar, per fare comprendere lo sport come strumento educativo di sviluppo delle differenti comunità e delle persone che in quelle comunità vivono.
Punto di partenza è l’incontro con i partner esteri. La domanda può essere formulata da una Istituzione o un’associazione estera, da una o più ONG o associazione italiana sportiva, di promozione sociale e di volontariato, associata o meno a UISP, oppure con una proposta di intervento del Dipartimento Politiche Internazionali nazionale o regionale dove costituito o di associati eletti nel Consiglio nazionale.
L’istruttoria è in ogni caso demandata ai referenti della struttura organizzata che ha ricevuto la richiesta e deve essere discussa nelle sedi politiche che possono sostenere o rifiutare politicamente od economicamente la fattibilità o l’opportunità della proposta.
Approvata la richiesta viene demandata alle strutture operative ogni intervento che riguarda fattibilità, progettazione, organizzazione attività, rendicontazione monitoraggio e valutazione dell’intervento.
In questa fase alcuni progetti potrebbero essere rivisti o cassati
Possono essere approvati anche semplici interventi di solidarietà con l’invio di materiali sportivi e denaro.
La parte più contenutistica che riguarda il gioco e lo sport viene discussa con i partner esteri in relazione alle condizioni degli impianti, attrezzature, materiali, struttura organizzativa e risorse umane formate esistenti.
Una volta sul campo le attività vengono organizzate in relazione agli iscritti con flessibilità sul contenuto ed il numero dei discenti.
Vengono condivise le procedure di doppia selezione dei partecipanti ai corsi di formazione. Una prima fase aperta a tutti con selezione finale per l’ammissione alla seconda fase a conclusione della quale i formati inizieranno a lavorare con compenso per il partner locale.
Le lezioni sono sempre teorico pratiche con moduli variabili ed alcuni moduli fissi che e riguardano:
- L’età evolutiva e lo sviluppo motorio
Facendo appello alle conoscenze prassiche pregresse come madre, padre, sorelle o fratelli maggiori, vengono descritte le interazioni tra bambino e adulto locali sulle routine (pasto, sonno, il cambio) e sulle attività libere o organizzate. Vengono discussi esempi concreti correlati alle teorie psicopedagogiche e attraverso il confronto si condividono interventi domestici ed extra domestici.
- La differenza tra gioco e sport
Vengono messi a confronto giochi e sport sulla base delle teorie di riferimento e delle opinioni dei partecipanti, si interviene sui pregiudizi motori relativi all’età, al genere alle diverse abilità con esempi teorico pratici, fino ad arrivare a conclusione della lezione teorica ad una griglia conclusiva condivisa che servirà come griglia di osservazione dei comportamenti motori delle attività pratiche
- Pratica ludica e sportiva e osservazione
Vengono fatti sperimentare dopo una spiegazione sintetica attività ludiche e sportive, con variazioni di materiali: nel peso, nelle dimensioni, nella forma; di spazi: distanze, dimensioni, forme. Mentre un gruppo sperimenta le attività pratiche un altro osserva e le descrive.
A conclusione della lezione in aula ogni gruppo in precedenza formato designa un capo gruppo per l’esposizione e gli allievi degli altri gruppi devono effettuare “critiche” sullo svolgimento delle attività
Gli strumenti descritti vengono sempre più raffinati ad ogni lezione, composta sempre da una parte teorica, una pratica e una di osservazione, una di confronto critico.
Le lezioni sono svolte nelle seguenti modalità:
1) frontali uno / tutti, ma non direttive.
Vengono fatte domanda agli allievi per mantenere attiva l’attenzione e verificare la comprensione. Il formatore chiama a turno casuale gli allievi alla lavagna per fare rispiegare quanto è stato detto.
E’ possibile interrompere in qualunque momento il formatore.
Le parole chiave vengono scritte in italiano e nella lingua veicolare del luogo sopra una lavagna.
Ognuno stare in aula dove e come vuole ( in piedi, seduto, sdraiato)
2) piccoli gruppi di 3-5 unità sono invitati a svolgere compiti a tempo, relativi all’argomento della lezione come ad esempio: organizzare un’ore di lezione, inventare giochi con varianti nuove, … Vengono utilizzati giochi di ruolo per verificare le relazioni tra le persone. La composizione dei gruppi vengono cambiati ogni giorno.
A conclusione della lezione ogni gruppo designa in aula un capo gruppo per l’esposizione, mentre gli allievi degli altri gruppi devono effettuare “critiche” sullo svolgimento delle attività
Non è possibile interrompere i compagni di corso e le “critiche” vengono fatte dopo l’esposizione. Il formatore dirime le eventuali controversie non solo con affermazioni confermative, ma utilizzando anche risposte verosimili o non vere da rettificare a seguito di discussione provocata con gli allievi.
3) le lezioni pratiche sono sia psicomotorie che socio motorie con la richiesta di eseguire quanto richiesto, in caso di errore mostrando il gesto ed in caso di ulteriore errore correggendo il gesto.
In ogni lezione viene sottratto qualche attrezzo necessario alla pratica e viene richiesto di svolgere egualmente le istruzioni ricevute.
Alla fine del corso viene somministrato un test individuale con domande multiple, vero o falso e libere con descrizione di massimo 5 righe. I Compiti vengono corretti alla lavagna e dopo ulteriori spiegazioni sulle risposte errate, si chiede di procedere all’autocorrezione. I compiti vengono consegnati a conclusione delle correzione al formatore docente del corso.
La necessità di lavorare all’estero con formatori volontari in tempi ristretti, massimo due settimane; con un periodo medio di 10 giorni utili, salvo complicazioni ed esternalità locali, per effettuare almeno 40 ore, con persone di diversi livelli di conoscenza e pratica sportiva, spesso con la necesssità di un interprete locale, ha portato ad affinare il metodo dello Sport Pertutti adattandolo alle formazioni fuori dall’Italia.
All’estero vengono formati animatori ludici, educatori e dirigenti sportivi e formatori di formatori che dovranno gestire le attività in loco.
Non scontata la possibilità di comunicare successivamente al corso via skype o via e-mail, perché spesso non ci sono le condizioni affinchè le connessioni siano attive,
E stato dunque elaborato un modello formativo che non preveda il repertorio di esercizi e giochi, ma insegni la capacità di produrre autonomamente da sé esercizi e giochi da già quelli conosciuti.
Nelle lezioni teoriche ogni gioco locale o di altre tradizioni ludiche purchè noto, viene scomposto negli elementi di spazio, tempo e numero: misure dell’impianto e dimensioni delle attrezzature di gioco, durata e turni del gioco, numero dei giocatori e delle attrezzature ludico o sportive.
Si parte facendo ideare dei percorsi motori che devono combinare più azioni motorie che facciano muovere tutto il corpo con e senza attrezzature.
Poi si organizzano lezioni con esercitazioni nelle quali un elemento ( spazio, tempo, numero) è preso come costate e gli altri elementi come variabili, creando molti giochi e sport a regole e tecniche apparentemente invariate.
Successivamente si cambiano le regole in relazione a perimetri e percorsi, limitazioni temporali per le azioni, cambi di velocità, direzione, senso e arresti, senza o con uno o più attrezzi anche diversi con regole di gioco simmetriche o dissimetriche.
Infine si ragiona sulle abilità motorie necessarie per compiere le attività inventate.
Da ultimo vengono illustrati gli sport richiesti e si procede alla destrutturando attraverso l’analisi comune di spazi, tempi, numero dei giocatori e delle attrezzature, delle regole.
Nelle lezioni sullo sport vengono spiegati il funzionamento dell’apparato cardiocircolatorio, la respirazione, il metabolismo aerobico, anaerobico alattacido e lattacido, l’allenamento delle capacità condizionali, i fondamentali delle discipline richieste.
Nelle lezioni pratiche vengono sperimentati i giochi inventati dalla classe per vedere se e come funzionano e vengono sperimentati gli sport illustrati dal formatore. In entrambi i casi sempre con la divisione in gruppi alternati di praticanti e osservatori e discussione successiva.
Nelle ultime lezioni viene organizzata una manifestazione sportiva e vengono proposti gli elaborati della classe alle gruppi di bambini/e che frequentano Centri Estivi, classi delle scuole o tesserati delle associazioni sportive locali, sempre con la divisione in gruppi alternati di praticanti e osservatori e con discussione successiva.
Nelle azioni di monitoraggio delle attività da parte degli esperti italiani vengono rilevate con interviste non solo la realizzazione delle stesse, ma anche tramite osservazione come vengono svolte ( ad esempio con esclusione di genere, età, diverse abilità oppure sequenza delle progressioni motorie o ludiche) e della spiegazione che animatori ed educatori danno della lezione e della finalità dei giochi proposti.

Translation - English This issue is one of the actions aimed at the visibility of the project “Invest in the education for a peaceful future in the occupied Palestinian territory” CUP n° E26G515000440007, co-financed by the Region of Emilia-Romagna.
The project consisted of a briefing with the teachers of the kindergarten and the children's entertainers (“young leaders”) of the summer camp “Burj Laq Laq” (The flamingo), in the old city of Jerusalem.
The work of Uisp (Italian Union for the Sport for All) and its NGO “Peace Games”, in Italy and abroad, in particular in the refugees camp of Shu'fat in Jerusalem, consists especially in the training of educators, social services, activities in summer camps and it has always been combined with a reflection on the concept of “game” and on the physical activity.
The method of the “Sport for all” used by Uisp abroad has only been described in internal seminars by trainers and volunteers involved in missions abroad.
Uisp's philosophy comes before the methodology oriented to the practice and the solution at concrete situations. This philosophy sees sport as a educational tool and a political vehicle of communication and cultural transformation.
These values makes part of the philosophy:
game partners and rivals are never enemies, rules are created and shared by all, adapted to personal and social contests.
This kind of sport experience helps you in the daily life, where autonomy and discipline, cooperation and competion are always together
Actions in Italy and abroad are always educational actions aimed at increase cognitive, relational and didactic skills of managers, educators and athlets. During this actions people are also taught to set up spaces and to manage the purchase or the donation of materials and equipment.
Changes in the daily life, whatever kind, always bring new chances and new risks.
In 1990, Uisp had created a own volunteers Ngo, the “Peace Games”, exactly to conduct activities of sport cooperation and solidarity abroad.
This Ngo has been doing projects in Palestine from 2000, exactly in Hebron, Jerusalem and Gaza; after that Uisp decided to experiment a new strategy for its educational actions abroad.
Strong and weak points of volunteering have been analysed through the years and now the association perfectly knows that international sport cooperation doesn't coincide with the sport actions that Uisp makes abroad.
Therefore, Uisp built alliances with bigger Ngos operating in the countries of interest, went through projects in collaboration with Ngos which shared the same targets in Bosnia, Palestine, Senegal and Lebanon.
After years experimenting, Uisp started searching for a Ngo which had the same educational values and the same strategies; Cisp (International Committee for the Development of Peoples) immediately seemed the right one.
Cisp was born in 1983 in Rome, it works in 30 countries and fosters
cultural politics events and international solidarity in general.
It is enrolled in the register of the Minister of Labour and Social Politics as an institution which carries out activities in favor of inmigrants, as Uisp.
Actions of Uisp abroad have always been coordinated with the activities in Italy, as in the educational projects like “Far form where?” in 2011, as in public events like the “Anti-racist world championship”, arrived at the XXI edition in 2017.
The regional committee of Uisp in Emilia-Romagna made available own educators with experience in Palestine and in Italy and Cisp provided its strong network in Italy and abroad and its technical skills in managing, planning and reporting.
Uisp and Cisp together decided to publish a handbook about the “Sport for all” methodology tested abroad by Uisp to spread the knowledge among our members and aspirant volunteers in the sport cooperation.
To fully understand our experience it is necessary to set the context and the cultural landmarks which lead our actions out of the reality of our association.
We want to thank Gian Luca Falcitelli, manager of the project for CISP, and Ada Carafini, manager on the spot, for the patience of adapting themselves to our volunteers needs.
Sport and Development
The idea of development refers to a teleological concept which moves up what it will be likely realised at the end of the process
Expressions as biological development, development of species, social development, economic development, developing countries, only share the same purposive epistemology.
The meaning of the word “development” changes depending on the expression. For instance, the biological development, exemplified by the enigma of the sphnix in the myth of Oedipus, is closer to a naturalistic description.
The others “developments” are rather theoretical constructions and expressions containing value prejudgements.
Indeed, the theory of the unidimensional and progressive development of Morgan, Comte and Rostow in the social sciences is still a reference point of several issues and international organisations.
However, after the release of “What now? Another development and international cooperation” in 1975, multidimensional theories have arisen. They take into consideration more plans of development: basic needs, personal self-fulfilment and eco-development.
Our points of reference are the dialectical method of Marx and the ecological method of Morin. These methods analyse development in a no-deterministic way and reduce the changes in nature and society -cyclical time as the case of renewable resources and the irreversible progressions like in the case of entropy- to a dynamic unit.
It is strongly necessary to start from the fundamentals: concepts as eco-development or sustainable development, fair development or self-centred development, democratic or partecipated development are rarely compatible and often exclude one each other.
Sport, as all human activities, works in the present, has a history in the past and inclinations of development in the future which all depend on the real practice and on the implicit and explicit values upstream.
Our focus is not the development of sport but the sport for development. This refers to different philosophies and operative approaches:
1) Sport promoted by religious organisations as activity for the free time, then linked to the social entertainment and considered as a complementary action which comes after the restock of essentials goods;
2) Technocratic sport which refers to neutral and impartial technical interventions. This approach stresses the transfer of procedures and techniques that are considered universal for the learning of sport disciplines and export codified rules;
3) Imperialis sport exports ways of management and sport disciplines that are expressions of specific societies with the aim of transfering “advanced” values and attitudes into “underdeveloped” societies where it takes low-cost sport workforce to import.
4) Sport for all aims at achieving the most appropriate techniques for the community of the country where it is intervening, keeping as main focus the concrete person. For this reason this method inlcude confrontations with locals and a lot of sharing moments.
Of course, interventions may be combined among them mainly abroad due to the different philosophies of the organisations active on the field and the biographies of the recruited educators.
Sport as a tool of the human development and the cohesion of communities has also become the focus of different international organisations, like the European Union (White paper of Sport, 2007) e United Nations (UN Office of Sport for Development and Peace, 2008).
According to the United Nations (2003) sport interventions in international cooperation can result efficent in four fields:
- Economic
- Social
- Environmental
- Volunteering
These fields can also be described as forms of capital: productive capital, relational capital, natural capital, human capital.
In the economic field it can produce a direct growth as concer equipment, clothing and sport plant building. It can also produce employment in the management and supply of sport services.
In the social field can unroll different functions to promote desirable attitudes: prevention in the health field, education of citizens to respect the rules, the prevention of delinquency and the integration of vulnerable and underprivileged groups.
In the environmental field can foster the knowledge of the territory and its safetu, the sustainable use of public, rural and urban spaces

In the volunteering field can advance the human and professional development, most of all among young people, in terms of experience of self-training.
The social role of sport
In all the international papers and in the specialistic literature, sport is always described as something with therapeutic virtues, almost as a panacea for all the ills in the world.
All the sport organisations declare their skills to act positively on the
education of mankind: from the birth to the death.
They say that:
- Sport makes you learn rules of life which are preparatory to the work. Transmit values and prevent deviant attitudes;
- Sport educates to consciousness of own body, to competitive and cooperative relations with the others, to conflict management, to acceptance of the defeat, to respect of the authority, to group identity, to social integration of differently abled, inmigrants, drug users and all the minorities;
- Sport gets people used to healthy styles of life that bring benefits and fight diseases as diabetes, hypertension, heart and respiratory diseases, obesity, dismorphism, etc.
- Sport practised as a hobby works like an anti-stress and practised in the routine contributes to self-esteem of makes you feel aesthetically more appreciated.
In any case, we talk about practised sport and not about sport lived as a sitting spectator.
So sport is a no-univocal concept
Nevertheless, there are different ways of practising sport: agonistic, amateur and professional; no-competitive sport, recreational or playful, organised or self-organised.
However, sport doesn't always transmit positive effects.
Historical examples of totalitarian regimes demonstrates taht sport
can also be used as a control instrument of the social behaviour through the nationalisation of the masses or through the setting up of sport branches of the military or thorugh the development of fanatical supporters.
Sport is a instrument of reproduction of those stereotypical behaviours that are used to divide the practice into male and female sports, abled and disabled, young and old.
Sport replicates the social and technical division of work: board and executive work, intellectual and manula work, productivity of the labourmeasured on the basis of record times.
Sport, then, is also used to perpetuate the existent order and social structure and may become another opium of the people. Sport is a social practise and a two-faced instrument, like all the practises and the social tools which reflect the dichotomy between value in use and exchange value of goods of capitalist societies.
Sport and values
We live in a complex society where people are constantly influenced by several educational agents -family, school, religion, etc.- that work separately, often using contradictory messages.
In this cacophony there is a dominant meaning of sport that looks at it as a special social instrument.
Therefore there is always the risk of discrimination of minorities also in the physical activities.
Sport transmits values so it is with full rights a educational agent.
Through this kind of activity men and women are exposed to role models, vehiculated by instructors, since the childhood.
The child learns about the moral of the society he belongs to through the adult (parents, siblings, instructor, teachers) and also through the act of playing and doing sport.
Sport has a social function in all ages but especially in the one included from six to eleven years old.
Motoric activity can captivate during the playful activity thanks to the joy of discovery, the awareness of own body and the consciousness of own progress during a performance.
This experience, if repeated more times, strengthens individual and team identification and allows you to repeat in other contexts what you have learnt about the motor activity.
Sharing space, time and rules makes sport and exercise become factors of socialization and resocialization of communicative behaviors that are different from those adopted in other social contexts where, for example, logic-cognitive learning is preferred and the body is disciplined by silence and immobility.
Physical education doesn't only renforce basic motor schemes and technical movements but it also helps self-knowledge and cognitive, relational and moral development.
Another sport is possible
In the contemporary society Uisp proposes its philosophy and pedagogy about sport, in its evolution from Italian Union for People's Sport to Italian Union for the Sport for all (in italian both definitions have the acronym U.I.S.P, translator's note)
Uisp was born in Bologna in the spring of 1948 from the “Front of the youth” (clandestine organisation made up of young anti-fascist and started in 1943). In September 1948, always in Bologna, there was the first national congress.
In December 1990, during the XXI congress in Perugia, Uisp changes its name.
The “Peolple's sport” wanted to create a sport that involved the social classes which were excluded from the activitites because of the salary or the lack of time.
The “Sport for all” is more universal and has the target of including all, without distinction of age, gender or origin and regardless for physical, mental and ability condition.
The “People's sport” addressed young people, adults, men and women to guarantee the access to the sport activity and championships. Its focus was the sport discipline in itself.
Instead, the focus of “Sport for all” is the person and not the action; it invents new opportunities for people's desires.
The “People's sport” asked for the access to the sports facilities for all and at the same condition of “inner circle” athlets. It asked for practising sport in proper and equipped spaces.
The “Sport for all” converts whatever public space into a sports facility for whoever wants to make sport, it wants to broadcast games and sports of all the countries.
Parks, rivers, green areas, squares and urban spaces are educator where you can experience sport, change its rules and inventing new ones.
Changing the name meant also changing the cultural paradigm. There was a reorganization of the disciplines, of their regulations and a new kind of education for instructors and managers who worked in the association.
The cultural revolution was won thanks to the subscription of 1.300.000 members of all the ages, abilities and economic conditions and also thanks to the spread of noncompetitive sport.
Nowadays Uisp has its headquarters in Rome and several branches in all the italian regions; they organise and promote championships, projects and events.
Uisp's championships work like the ones organised by the sport federations, that means by age and sex. The disciplines are: water disciplines (swim, diving, rowing, canoe, kayak, surf, sailing), athletics, riding, motoring, motorcycling, baseball, games (15 sector for 75 disciplines), soccer, cycling, dance, eastern discipline (20 disciplines), gymnastics (10 disciplines among which circus activities), ski, ice-skating, basketball, volleyball, skating, rugby, tennis and archery.
In particular, Uisp organise weekly race walkings already imitated by all. People of all the ages, genders and abilities take part in these races and there are different chatrs and prizes for all.
Uisp has national social projects in penitentiaries (male, female and juvenil) with the convicts, in schools with programs on sport, food, gender differences and “mondiality”. It works against doping and sedentary with proposals on healthy lifestyles and it introduces destructured sports in urban spaces for teenagers. It adapts sports to the different physical and psychic abilities and it works for a sustainable sport during its events. Finally it works in projects of international cooperation and responsable tourism.
Every year Uisp promotes national events that lasts from one to four days: “Giocagin” (dance, skate, gymnastic, martial arts), “Neveuisp” (ski), “Vivicittà” (walking), “Bicincittà” (cycling), “Antiracist World Championship” (all the sports with teams from all over the world), “Summer basket”, “Matti per il calcio” (“crazy for soccer”: soccer for mentally ills), “Diamoci una mossa” (sport and food).
These different kinds of events are the practical realisation of the “Sport for all ”philosophy that includes:
- the right to have a better quality of your daily life;
- Sport as a resource which gives a hand to health, education and sociality;
- a new right of citizenship that is just for its values that refer to fairness and participation (and not to records)
- a philosophy of integration which is not based on individual potentialities but on the exercise done by all, regardless to the skills. This philosophy doesn't refuses competition but gives priority to the community and to the multisport.
- another kind of sport that asks for motor activity as a service within welfare public policies.
- a equal sport citizenship for women and men of different countries, languages, ideology, origin and nationality;
- a equal life chance for all.
The “Sport for all” methodology
The childhood
During the childhood from 0 to 18 years old the endogenous motor development corresponds first to the motor activity and then to the sport activity.
The first one is spontaneous: from innate reflexes of the unweaneds to the games with the own body.
The second one is culturally conditioned by the place of birth and by the family and community values (in the globalized world, with the mass-production, games have potentially become the same in all the countries, whereas modern sport has become it since the first Olympics games in 1896 in London).
Organisations in the field organise sport activities for kids taking into consideration the age of the users.
Up to 5-years-old kids we propose random motor experience in the form of game, discovery, recreational equipment with different stirrings (smooth and rough surfaces, even or sloping, hot or cold materials...) experienced by the kid in all the forms: cognitive, linguistic, motor, emotive and affective.
From 5 to 7 years old we propose motor activities on multiple bases to support the perceptive-kinetic skills and to strenghten basic motor schemes by assuming additional tactile, visual, acoustic, vestibular and kinesthetic information.
From 8 to 12 years old we propose multi-sports activities to develop generale and specific coordination skills.
Between 6 and 12 years old other coordination skills are enhanced: static and dynamic balance, motor control, rhytm, adaptation skill, handiness, timing, motor learning, sense of direction, reaction skill and combination of movements skill.
By 12 years old we introduce the basic techniques of the sport disciplines with multilateral training programs with the aim of improving all the ohysical qualities. The gesture will be experimented with equipment of different weight and size, with different types of movements (high and low, long and short, inward and outward) and with unexpected changes of situation.
Only by 15 years old we introduce the sport specialisation with a progressive increase of the conditional skills (strenght, resistance, speed) and the learning of the startegy and the technique.
We give importance to the affective/emotive development linked to the pleasure ant to the relations with the others: pleasure of playing, pleasure of the effort, pleasure of the competition and the collaboration.
Performances can be objectively measured and for this reason they can determine the development of self-esteem or the devaluation in case of a bad score.
A important educator's task is to make understand that:
1) There are not abosulte performances but only relative ones by which we can obtain satisfaction and verify our improvement;
2) The defeat's ethics; that means we have to recognize that the other has been better than us and that only our defeat allowed the other to win.
Uisp operator adjusts the method and its values according to the the age: babyhood (0-2), second childhood (2-6), childhood (6-10), preadolescence (10-14), adolescence (more or less 14-18).
The method
As concerns the methodology, during the Uisp’s training courses we propose the oblique approach, consistent with our sport philosophy that puts at the centre the person and not the discipline.
The oblique approach is based on the concept that each situation is different and we can not give the same task to all; we should give different solutions and strategies according to the person in order to reach a motor goal.
That means we should dedicate attention and time to each person.
Then, the observation of the movements by the operator becomes a fundamental step together with the feedbacks to modify strategies and proposal in a experimental way.
Therefore the Uisp instructor is not only a educator who can not leave anyone back in the own personal path, but he or she i salso a “researcher” that experiments new exercises and who is able to codify and communicate the know-how.
Today the knowledge of the olympic sport and the new generation’s sports and the research on the traditional games is a patrimony unequally spread among Uisp’s educators.
The combination among the “academic” knowledge, the inter-disciplinary research, the methodology experimented in Italy and abroad in the desert, in the refugees camps and in areas of conflict, should be elevated by the knowledge of other cultures, their customs and traditions, their religious, political and storic representations, and not only by the knowledge of their sports and games.
In the experience with foreign diasporas in Italy and in the international context people usually get in touch with the codes of different cultures.
These codes don not include only the language but they also refer to spiritual and religious values, to rituals like those made in the greetings, in the clothing and while eating. There are codes that regulate the relations between men and women, adults and minors, authority and obedience. Furthermore there is a specific cultural code that refers to the body and to the “ethno-motor” functions.
Indeed our movements are deeply influenced by our culture.
“Ethno-motor studies” refer exactly to the link between the motor activity and the culture or social environment in which it has developed.
Parlebas’ studies have demonstrated how sports in western societies are basically founded on the duel’s example, individual or in team, symetric or asymetric, cooperative or paradoxal.
While in countries out of Europe it doesn’t work always like that.
Games and Sports
Game and Sport don’t coincide in practice and it is interesting how in the training courses we do abroad it always comes out a different definition of the relation between these two elements, also in the same class and in the same country.
Games and sports are not only cultural expressions of the society where they are used, then. They are also fruit of the social class and of the cognitive skills of each person.
In our trainings we use the playful-philosofic studies and the classifications of Parlebas and Callois.
In the analysis of sports and games Parlebas outlines the distinctive features of the internal logic that guides the behavior of the player with the other players, the space, the time and the objects. Then, he studies the external logic of the player or the whole team and he notices how it is conditioned by the age, sex, culture and social class of the player.
His definition of the structure of games and sports would be incomplete if we didn’t define the game and the categories of the different playful and sport activities.
Given that Callois defines the games as an activity that is:
Free: the player can’t be obliged to participate;
Separated: from time and space limits of everyday life;
Uncertain: performance and final score are not decided a priori;
Unproductive: it doesn’t produce goods, services and richness;
Regulated: by rules that suspend the ordinary laws;
Fake: aware of its unreality.
He categorises sports and games in four groups:
Competition games (agon):
mental or physical performances of skilled tasks aimed at winning;
Gamble games (alea):
performances in which the primary factor is the fortune;
Simulacrum games (mimicry):
performances of simulation;
Vertigo games (ilinx):
performances where extreme sensations are experimented.
These four categories can be all found in one sport or playful performance like, for example in the game of poker where you compete by playing with ability your cards. Here you depend on the coincidences, pretend to have better cards in your hands and you experience the risk by keeping playing to the limit.
A different analysis is necessary for the definition of sport.
The first difference concerns the fact that the player of a game can suspend his participation in every moment if he is playing alone, with a negotiation if he is playing with other players.
While in the case the conflict is not solved the player who defects will be considered, at most, a killjoy, during a sport competition even the withdrawal procedure is codified.
Another difference is that games’ players can make arrangements to derogate from the rules, instead, in the sport competitions and in the “sport games” as chess this is not possible.
The infringement of a rule is seen as something unfair that the match referee has to penalise.
In the sport the social universe recurs, while in the game it tends to be absent.
Naturally, sport can become playful just by derogating from the rules and the penalties and reducing the performance to a mere confrontation of skills, as in the “Antiracist world championship” where the matches are played without the referee and everybody can play without distinction of age, sex and nationality.
Making the educators aware about the distinction between game and sport doesn’t mean defining roles but it is a working instrument that we need to organise activities consistent with a objective.

Our ditactical experience in the Middle East, in Sahara and in Bosnia in sport and playful training maybe extend the perimeter of the Sport for all methodology.
We quickly retrace all our standard steps to make understand sport as a development educational tool of different communities and people.
The starting point is the meeting with our foreign partners. The request may be formulated by a institution, a foreign association, a italian Ngo or by a Uisp’s department of international policies (national or regional).
In any case, the investigation is left to the contact points of the structure that received the request and it has to be discussed in the political bodies that can support or refuse the feasibility of the proposal for economic or political reasons.
Once the request has been approved the process is left to the operative structures that analyse feasibility, planning, organisation of activities, reporting and the intervention assessment.
During this phase some projects may be revised or deleted. Even easy solidarity’s interventions can be approved, as the referral of sport material and money.
The most substantial part that concerns games and sports is discussed with the foreign partners in relation to the sport facilities’ condition and the trained human resources available.
Once on the filed the activities are organised with regard to the persons enrolled with flexibility on the content and the number of the learners.
We give information about the selection’s procedures of the training course. The first part of the selection is opened to all and it has final test, at the end of the second part the learners will start to work with fee for the local partner.
Lessons are always theoretical and practical and consist of varying and fixed modules that concern:
- Childhood and motor development
Calling on our past practical knowledge as a mother, father, sister or brother, we describe the interactions between children and adults in everyday life (meals, sleep, diaper’s changing) and in free and organised activitites. We discuss on concrete examples linked to educational and psychological theories and we share domestic and non-domestic interventions through the confrontation.
- The difference between game and sport
We compare games and sports on the basis of theories and participants’ opinions. We work on motor prejudices about age, gender and different abilities by giving theoretical and practical example until we reach, at the end of the lesson, a conclusive template that will be used as motor behaviors observation’s grid.
- Playful and sport exercise and its observation
After a quick explanation we pass to the practice of sport and playful activities. Of course we change tools depending on the weight, the dimensions and the shape and we also change the spaces. While a group experience an activity the other one observes and describes it.
At the end of the lesson each group appoints a spokesperson for the presentation and the learners of the other group have to “criticize” the development of the activity.
These tools are more and more refined in every lesson that is always composed by a theoretical part, a practical part, observation and critical confrontation.
Lessons take place in these ways:
1) Non-directiorial lectures, individual or collective
The teacher makes questions to the learners to keep the attention high and verify the comprehension. The teacher calls in turn the learners and make them repeat the concept just explained to all.
It is possible to interrupt the teacher anytime.
Keywords are written on a blackboard in italian or in a vehicular language.
Everyone can stay in the room anywhere and any way (standing, sitting, laying).

2) Small groups of 3-5 members are invited to do easy time tasks, concerning the topic of the lesson. For example: organise one-hour lesson, invent games with new variations, etc.
We use role playing to verify relations among persons. The composition of the groups changes every day.
At the end of the lesson each group appoints a spokesperson for the presentation and the learners of the other group have to “criticize” the development of the activity.
It is not possible to interrupt the classmates and the “critiques” only come after the presentation. The teacher rules on the possible disputes not only with confirming statements but also with likely or fake answers which will be corrected later with the help of the learners.
3) Practical lessons are both psychomotor and social-motor, the teacher asks learners to do a gesture and in case of mistake the teacher shows them the correct one, in case of further mistakes the teacher corrects it.
In every lesson we take some device out to see if the learners are able to follow the instruction without it.
At the end of the course there is a individual test with multiple-choice questions, true or false and a essay of maximum five lines. The test will be corrected at the blackboard and after further explanations on the wrong answers the self-correction shall take place. Learners bring their test to the teacher at the end of the correction.
The volunteer instructors work abroad in time constraints, maximum two weeks and 40 hours of lessons, with people with different sport and practical background and with the need to have a interpreter. That brought Uisp to refine the “Sport for all” method adapting it to the training made abroad.
Here we train reacreational educators, teachers, sport managers and instrucotrs of instructors who will have to manage the activitites on the field.
It is not obvious that we communicate with our learners after the course by mail or skype because there isn't always the internet connection.
Therefore, the educational model that was drawn up doesn't include exercises and games but it teaches the skill to produce by own self the games and the activitites starting from the ones you already knew.
In theoretical lessons every traditional game is deconstructed in space, time and number: size of the facility and dimensions of the tools, game's duration and turns, numbers of players and instruments.
We start with motor paths that has to combine different gestures and make the learner move all the body with and without the instruments.
Then we organise exercises in which one element (space, time, number) is taken as constant and the others as variables and we create a lot of games and rules apparently unchanged.
Subsequently we change the game's rules: perimeters and paths, time limitations, speed changes, directions and stops, number of tools, symmetrical or asymmetrical rules.
Finally we think about the motor abilities necessary to do those invented activities and the learners practice the sport activity requested.
In lessons about sport we teach the cardiovascular system, the breathing, aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, the training of the conditional skills, the fundamentals of the requested disciplines.
In the practical lessons we experience the games invented by the class to see if and how they work, then we practise the sport explained by the teacher. In both cases we work in groups made of practitioners and observers and we discuss the work at the end of the lesson.
In last lessons we organise a sport event and we propose the work of the class to the children who attend the summer camps or the local sport association, always with the division in groups with observers and practitioners.
During the monitoring italian experts make interviews and inspections to see how the activities are being realising (e.g. Gender, age and different abilities discrimination, progress made in the motor and playful skills). They also report the point of view of the educators on the lessons and the games proposed by the learners.
