6 cultural features that are unique to Oman
Oman has been a major tourist attraction for the Middle East and for visitors from across the world. In recent years the number of tourists attracted to Oman’s friendly people and heritage sites have increased manifold.
Having several unique cultural facets such as folk dances, arts, handicrafts, traditional costumes, cuisines, falajes, and traditions that distinguish Oman from the rest of its neighbors; a visitor to Oman can see a myriad of distinct cultural legacies in each and every Governorate of the Sultanate.
Infact, for people who take pleasure in reviving history and have an eye for arts, architecture and niceties of a civil society, Oman is the perfect place. Every region reflects Oman’s rich cultural heritage and are enriched with pure culture and a traditional lifestyle in every facet.
Here are 6 cultural features that are unique to Oman:
1) Folk Dances:
Folk dances are performed in every Governorate in Oman, and are part of its rich cultural legacy. Omanis perform these dances at a number of occasions that include: the celebration of the birth of a new-born, weddings and other social celebrations. Oman’s most popular folk dance is the Razha, where men stand in two lines battling with their swords while reciting poetry. The Razha is one of the oldest Omani war dances that uses the drums to motivate the dancers.
2) Traditional Omani dress:
The Traditional Omani dress differs from one Governorate to the other, as each Governorate has its own unique sense of style. The national dress is an ankle-length, collarless gown with long sleeves, called a dishdasha. Usually, the clothing is white, although a few other colors such as brown, lilac, and black are sometimes worn. The national dress for Omani women includes a dress worn over trousers (sirwal) and a headdress (lihaf).
3) The Omani Khanjar:
The Omani Khanjar is a popular symbol of Oman’s identity, and is a part of all of the country’s national emblems. It exemplifies the Omani values of generosity, authenticity, and respect, and is made of pure silver. Omanis wear the Khanjar as a gesture of happiness and camaraderie while celebrating different social occasions. There are several types of Omani Khanjars such as: Al Saieedi, Al Suri, Al Janubi, and Al Nizwani, to name a few.
4) Forts and Castles:
The sultanate’s forts and castles are reminiscent of the creativity and innovative thinking of Omanis which can be witnessed in their unique architectural and artistic structures. The forts and castles were built by the Omanis for several historical reasons, and are major tourism attractions that attract tourists and visitors year on year. Representing the history of the people of a particular region, forts and castles are present in every Omani Governorate. The Ministry of Tourism works relentlessly to restore and preserve these attractions as part of its sustainable tourism strategy.
5) Omani Cuisine:
Every Governorate in Oman is known for its unmistakable cuisine that distinguishes it from the other Governorates. The Omani Halwa is the most popular traditional dish that has gained a reputation amongst international tourists and visitors. Some of the other famous Omani dishes are: Al Oursia, Al Harees, the Dhofari Luhoh bread, Rikhal bread, and the Omani Shuwaa.
6) The Falajes:
Oman’s Falajes are a vital aspect of its culture. Falajes are the traditional system of narrow, mud-walled water channels used to irrigate fields and date plantations, and to provide villages and towns with reliable water supplies. They are reflective of the intellect of the people of Oman as their design depends on several sciences such as navigation, math and engineering.

تتميّز سلطنة عمان بإرثها الثقافي الزاخر بالكنوز الحضارية المتفرّدة والتي تمكّن الإنسان العُماني بإبداعه وفكره النيّر في ترسيخها على مر العصور. فعلى مدى التاريخ ابتكر العمانيون فنوناً وحرفاً وعادات شكّلت بدورها قيم المجتمع العماني وأعطته طابع الخصوصية والتميّز. فمن أقصى عمان إلى أقصاها، تجد ألواناً متنوّعة من هذه الموروثات الثقافية التي تميز كل محافظة بطابع خاص لا تجده في المحافظات الأخرى، والتي بالتالي تميّز سكان كل محافظة بأزيائهم ومأكولاتهم وعاداتهم وتقاليدهم وفنونهم. ويستمتع الزوّار والسيّاح عند زيارتهم للسلطنة بتجربة ثقافية وحضارية مثرية بالتعرّف على الحياة العمانية الأصيلة وتفاصيلها التي تضم قيماً إنسانية جميلة وابتكاراً وإبداعاً مُميّزاً. ولا يخفى على أحد الدور الذي تلعبه البيئة العمانية وطبيعتها الساحرة في استلهام هذا التنوّع الثقافي البارز. وهنا سنستعرض 6 شواهد ثقافية وحضارية لا تجدها إلا في عُمان:
1) الفنون العُمانية الشعبية:
تُمارس الفنون الشعبية العمانية في كافة محافظات السلطنة، وتُقام في المناسبات الاجتماعية كالأعراس أو الاحتفال بالمولود الجديد وغيرها. ومن أشهر الفنون العمانية الشعبية هو فن الرزحة، حيث يصطف الرجال في رقصة الرزحة في صفوف متساوية يتبارز فيها الرجال بالسيوف ويلقون فيها الشعر العربي بأنواعه في مناظرات شعرية. ويعتبر فن الرزحة من أقدم الفنون العمانية التقليدية الحربية والتي يُستخدم فيها الطبل لإثارة الحماس بين المتنازحين من الفريقين. إلى جانب فن الرزّحة، فهنالك العديد من الفنون العمانية الشعبية الأخرى مثل العازي والبرعة وغيرها.
2) الأزياء العُمانية التقليدية:
تختلف وتتنوّع الأزياء العُمانية التقليدية بشكلٍ واضح بين محافظات السلطنة، فلكل مُحافظة زيّها التقليدي المُميّز والمتفرّد. وتتنوّع الأزياء العُمانية التقليدية في زخارفها وألوانها ونوع القُماش المُستخدم، ولكن جميعها تتميّز بألوانها المبهجة وخياطتها اليدوية الدقيقة والمناسبات التي يتم ارتدؤها فيها. وقد دأب العمانيون على الالتزام بأزيائهم التقليدية والتي تُعّد حالياً مظهراً من مظاهر الحفاظ على التراث، حيث لا يزال العمانيون يرتدونها في مناسباتهم المختلفة.
3) الخنجر العُماني:
إن الخنجر العُماني هو رمز الهوية العمانية، فهو يحتّل الشعارات الوطنية ويرمز إلى الشخصية العُمانية وما تحويه من الكرم والأصالة والشهامة. وقد توارث العُمانيون صناعة الخنجر حيث يتم صنعه من الفضّة الخالصة في عملية شاقة تستغرق وقتاً ليس بقليل. ويتم النقش على صفائح الخنجر في عملية دقيقة تتطلّب مستوىً عالٍ من المهارة والاحترافية. ويرتدي العمانيون الخنجر في مناسباتهم واحتفالاتهم وهنالك العديد من الخناجر العُمانية منها السعيدي والصوري والجنوبي والنزواني.
4) القلاع والحصون:
إن القلاع والحصون العُمانية هي شواهد تاريخية وحضارية على مدى براعة العُماني وذكائه و وكذلك فنّه، فهي تضم بين جنباتها دلائل تشير إلى الإبداع العُماني المتأصل منذ القدم، بهندسة بارعة وفنون معمارية فريدة. وقد شيّد العمانيين القلاع والحصون لأغراض تاريخية مُتعددة وهي آثار حضارية في الوقت الحالي تجذب الكثير من السُيّاح والزوّار للتعرّف على التاريخ العُماني الأصيل. وتنتشر القلاع والحصون في كافة محافظات و السلطنة، فلا تكاد محافظة تخلو منها. وقد عكفت حكومة السلطنة على ترميمها وتأهيلها وتحويلها إلى مناطق جذب سياحي.
5) المطبخ العُماني:
يمتلئ المطبخ العُماني بالكثير من المأكولات العُمانية التقليدية الشهيرة والتي تجعل المطبخ العُماني متفرّداً بأطباقه الشهيّة، ومن أشهر هذه المأكولات هي الحلوى العُمانية التي تُلاقي رواجاً كبيراً بين السُيّاح والزوّار. وتختلف كذلك الحلوى العُمانية من منطقة إلى أخرى ولكن لا يختلف اثنان على طعمها اللذيذ. كما يضم المطبخ العُماني مأكولات أخرى مثل العرسية والهريس وخبز لحوح الظُفاري وخبز الرخال والشواء العُماني. وفي كل مُحافظة عمانية تجد صنفاً أو صنفين مميّزان، كما تختلف مسميات الطبق الواحد من منطقة إلى أخرى.
6) الأفلاج:
قد تكون الأفلاج أحد أهم السمات الحضارية التي تمتاز بها سلطنة عُمان. فهي اختراع عُماني يمتاز بذكائه وبراعته الفائقة من الناحية الهندسية والزراعية والفلكية. فالأفلاج هي إرث حضاري تتميّز به كافة ولايات السلطنة، ابتكره العمانيون لري مزارعهم وتقسيم حصص المياه بين أفراد القرية الواحدة. وإذا ما ذهبت في جولةٍ بين المزارع في القرى العمانية، سترى المياه تنساب في الأفلاج طوال اليوم، في مشهدٍ جميل يبعث على الراحة والاسترخاء. ولا يزال العمانيون يحافظون على نظام الري بالأفلاج فهو النظام التقليدي المُعتمد في ري المزارع بالسلطنة.
