Spanish term

se refiere a lente de contacto

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) oftalmología
En un informe oftalmológico:

"Nota: Tiene estudio de topografía corneal, donde se aprecia alteraciones de la curvatura de la cornea, compatible en el ojo derecho con queratocono grado II.

**Se refiere a lente de contacto** presentando mejoría de agudeza visual en ambos ojos 20/20."

Contact lens was prescribed?

English interference = mal español? Referral is commonly used in English by GPs (general practitioners or family doctors) when "referring" a patient to a specialist, as is the case here. Perhaps this widespread usage has led to use of "referirse" in the Spanish rather than the more appropriate "derivar". I agree that "contact lens was prescribed" is easier and probably clearer than bending over backwards trying to keep the notion of "referral" in the translation, but hey...
Marie Wilson May 8, 2017:
Although a contact lens for just one eye sounds odd, from what I have read this condition can affect just one eye, and in the ST it only mentions the right eye. How that would improve vision in both eyes is beyond my scope, but that is what it says.
Wilsonn Perez Reyes May 8, 2017:
Mal español "Se refiere a" significa literalmente "It refers to". Lo mejor es decir: se recetan/prescriben lentes de contacto (en plural, porque se habla de mejoría en ambos ojos). En el área médica, (to) refer es "remitir" o "derivar", "referir" es espanglish.

Referral for contact lense fitting

= Patient is referred to optometrist to be fitted for contact lens.
"Contact lens was prescribed" is a more economical way of expressing it, but as the Spanish original uses "se refiere", I'm trying to maintain the notion of referral in the translation.
Example sentence:

If you refer a patient for contact lens fitting: you should provide all relevant information to the colleague to whom you are referring the patient.

Sometimes you'll be referred to a specialist optometrist for a referral refinement.

Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen D. Moore : This seems to me have the right idea; I agree with Neil about keeping the verb active if possible.

Perhaps there is some EN interference in the use of "refiere", but it's what we call a referral.
