Description: Une "installation de câbles complète", y compris ses dispositifs de fixation, est soumise à une flamme dans un grand four pendant une durée déterminée selon une courbe de température normalisée. De plus, les systèmes sont soumis au poids maximal admissible et aux charges prescrites. Les conducteurs sous tension de service ne doivent ni se rompre, ni donner lieu à des courts-circuits.
Signification: Ce type d’essai très complexe et proche de la pratique porte non seulement sur le câble, mais aussi sur ses éléments de fixation. Par conséquent, il constitue plutôt un essai de système et non de câble. Le maintien de fonctionnement obtenu (E 30, E 60 ou E 90) ne saurait être comparé directement avec les valeurs de l’essai de maintien de l’isolation."

"Functiebehoud kabels en bevestigingsmaterialen
Functiebehoud is het antwoord voor de installateur. De bedrijfs-zekerheid van noodzakelijke veiligheidsinrichtingen is gewaarborgd als de elektrische bedrading met draag- en bevestigingssysteem zo wordt uitgevoerd dat in geval van brand deze blijft functioneren.
Bekabeling: De weg naar functiebehoud
Om nader uitleg te kunnen geven aan de normen voor functie-behoud, kijken we eerst naar de geschiedenis die hieraan vooraf ging. Brandveilige bekabeling begon bij de nog veel toegepaste moeilijk brandbare kabel, ofwel de “MB”-kabel. Deze moet geconstrueerd zijn volgens norm VDE 0472 deel 813 evenals de MB-kabel met lage rookontwikkeling.
Daarna kwam de FE180 kabel. Deze kabel zorgt voor isolatiebehoud volgens VDE0472 deel 814, ondanks het feit dat FE op functiebehoud duidt (Flamm Einwirckung) voldoet deze kabel niet aan de DIN4102/12, de norm voor functiebehoud. Bij functiebehoud wordt er gekeken naar de karakteristieke kromme van een brand met als kritisch punt T=1200 °C. Een kabel volgens E30 is een kabel met functiebehoud volgens DIN4102 deel 12 waarbij 30 voor het minimaal aantal minuten functiebehoud staat.
