I believe this is the character you are thinking of (pronounced 'xin').It has quite a few different meanings. 'A man stands beside his word' is not really one of them, though that aspect comes through in meaning 2.信 is also used in 信用卡 = credit card, for example.
[The 'man'you mention is the 'person' radical at the left (known as 'danliren'). The part on the right is the character for speech/speak/word, 'yan'. 'a man stands beside his word' might be one way to remember this character, but it is not the meaning of it as far as I know.]

Single characters are used as whole words mainly in Classical Chinese, but not today in Modern Chinese where they are mainly combined with other characters in \'compounds\'. One of the meanings for 信 in Classical Chinese (there are 8 different ones in my Classical Chinese dictionary) is 讲信用 = to keep one\'s word.
