However, (thinking) I use e-mail for receiving and sending texts. But, when it comes to discussing things, (prices, deadlines, etc.) then I use: SKYPE, MSN Messenger or Yahoo Phone in that order. Nigel. | |

even though a lot of my clients are local, we still communicate mostly by email...occasionally by phone or MSN. Of course for sending texts, it's totally email. I have SKYPE but i don't use it as much as i thought i would. Frequently the voice quality isn't that great; people often prefer to use SKYPE chat. Skype, email, phone... Depending on the season and client: quite a few customers are on Skype, they (as well as most others) have email, some still prefer phoning - in case of emergency, especially. Hardly any of them rely on snail mail or courier. A few come over. I gave up MSMessenger: the securiy devices on my system censor too many conversations and Yahoo!Messenger is only for private use and on a different machine.

Based on my experience at least, my estimation is that the chances of a misunderstanding via email are about 1%-5%, while the chances of a misunderstanding by voice communication are 95%-99%. After the rare voice conversation, I always make sure to have any agreement in writing. Having said that, I do notice that more and more agencies mention a Skype account, maybe someone can explain the advantage of it: if one is at the computer to talk, one is at the compu... Well, still maybe 7 years back, I probably would have answered telephone, but e-mail has taken over almost completely, with occasional Skype and phone communication. When on Skype, I rarely use the voice option, chat is just too convenient. Completely different from when I started in 1994. E-mail was not yet very established in Europe at that time. In that time, I felt obliged to order an ISDN connection with 4 lines, one business line, one private line, one fax number and one for ... ... because I communicate both via email AND telephone. With local clients via telephone (they almost always approach me via phone), with foreign clients via email.
