No, because I'm not interested Jan 13, 2009

I assume the question is talking about Skype, Messenger, etc. Personally, I can’t be bothered with them. If I’m sitting in front of the computer, it’s to work and I really don’t want any instant-interruptions (no matter how well meaning) or someone who wants to chat, etc.

If I want to be social, I’ll find some other way to do it. Maybe I’m old-fashioned but I still prefer face-to-face contact over Facebook type encounters. It’s not that I’m against social networking

It’s not that I’m against social networking over the Internet; I’m sure it’s a great blessing (and even fun) for many people. My wife and kids are avid Facebook and Messenger users, but I just want to get my work (always a lot) done when I’m in front of the screen and then find something else to do.

I suppose the meaning of the question is whether we are wasting time chatting etc instead of working.
I find sites like Facebook useful to keep in touch with friends, Messenger to chat online with my family in Scotland, and Skype to save on phone charges, especially for international calls.
Occasionally I have answered the odd request for help on Skype too, for help with Spanish homework or abbreviations, but it hasn't affected my work in any way.

I don't think of Skype as "social networking." For me, it's a tool I use for work, and for free or cheap phone calls. Social networks to me are things like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace and Twitter. I don't use them, except for a page on MySpace for my band, which I always forget to update.

I'm on LinkedIn. Don't know whether that counts, as it's more professional than social, but in any case it hasn't had any discernible effect on my business - maybe I'm not active enough. I'm not on any other social networking sites (although three friends on separate occasions asked me why I wasn't on Facebook over Christmas; it really seems to be taking off, even among the 40-somethings).

Hi All,

I was referring to Facebook more than anything. I did have the name in the question when I submitted my poll to be published, but the moderators took it out for some reason...?

Hi All,

I was referring to Facebook more than anything. I did have the name in the question when I submitted my poll to be published, but the moderators took it out for some reason...?

A few months back I started using Facebook for the first time and found loads of old friends on there, which was great for catching up and all that. But before long I was finding it was taking up so much of my time, that it was turning my average working day into circa 16 hours a day, when I should have been circa 8-10 hours a day! (Not really my idea of a quality life). I was turning into a computer veg because of it basically, so it had to go.

I guess that's one of the problems of working from home, it's so hard to discipline yourself with the old computer... I did find Facebook very annoying in that it sent me emails any time someone sneezed or did anything basically, which of course I was responding to every time, as you do (kind of like when you get a text message, you always read it straight away).

So it's back to traditional social networking for me! I was just curious to see if many others were affected by the distractions of social networking as I was.

Cheers,

James

What do you define as social networking sites ? Jan 13, 2009

What do you define as social networking sites ? I would gather that you do not refer to a networking site such as www.proz.com as it is a very specific professional networking site.

Yup... guilty as charged Jan 13, 2009

I used to get easily distracted with sites like MSN, Hi5, Google Chat, they are too addictive... that's why now I rarely use them... to avoid being tempted

My time is precious and I sure don't wanna waste it.

Yield not to temptation! Jan 13, 2009

James - what you should do is set it up so that it doesn't boot up automatically when you start your PC. That way, you only log in and check what your friends are up to when you decide to, in your own "time out". I had to uninstall MSN Messenger to stop it starting up every time I booted my laptop.

RE: Yield not to temptation! Jan 13, 2009

Neil, I'm an IT guy by profession, so I have everything set up to not bother me by default. However, Facebook is something different I found... Mega-intrusive, with settings you cannot control, and ultimately VERY annoying and time-wasting...

I never got in to that. Jan 13, 2009

I have plenty of other ways of wasting time on the internet, but try to do work first.
I do find email a useful way of keeping in touch with family and friends, especially those in other time zones and those who work shifts.

I refuse Jan 13, 2009

I hate them all, sorry. I just can't stand the feeling of being monitored 24/7. Especially Facebook, I don't understand how any sensible person can agree to their Terms of Service in the first place.

I'm already spending too much time online anyway, reading blogs, listening to music, posting on forums....
