Actually it has never happened, but I have been recommended by satisfied clients...that's really gratifying!

Yes, a few times. I too have recommended other translators. The reasons may be similar for many colleagues who recommend (or have been recommended by) others:
1) Different language pairs
2) Different specialisations, familiarity with certain topics, or suitability for a particular assignment;
and not in the least
3) Availability - already occupied for some time to come or off on vacation (quite rare)

When they have run into bottlenecks or a customer of theirs requires translation in a language pair or topic which is not their specialty.

... several times, and I have always been very grateful because I really appreciate their recognition. Positive feedback in my previous jobs was always thin on the ground and I find the recomendations of colleagues and/or clients highly motivating.

Happy to record that I have received quite a lot of jobs this way. Financially obviously not to be sniffed at, and, as Neil says, highly motivating. In every case the job has been passed on by a colleague for whom I have great respect - to date, nothing has ever come through from anyone I don't feel this about, so I'm wondering, if this were to happen, how I would react!
And I'm happy to be able to reciprocate occasionally too.

I answered no, although there's no way for me to know. I may have been recommended or referred and maybe there was no follow-up.
I have recommended a few colleagues. I don't like recommending peers because I somehow feel responsible for their performance, so I only recommend colleagues whose work I know very well (you'd have to collaborate with me for at least 50,000 words worth of work or more) and of whom I can attest without the slightest doubt that their work is on par with mine... That doesn't happen often, because even if I often work with very competent people, I almost never have the chance to work with them long enough to know for sure that the quality of their work is consistent.
I wonder if those who recommend collagues acctually contact the collague in question to tell them that they have been recommended. I also wonder whether they contact them before or after they recommend them. I always contact them before, and I also tell the collague in question how much I charge to that client, to help them negotiate a rate. Obviously, this also has advantages for me - chances are, the colleague in question will not charge a rate sensibly inferior to mine, so s/he would not be "stealing" my client. ▲ Collapse

However, on certain seasons, it does have a limit. I've had clients calling back saying, hey, it seems no one's available...

When I started in that trade some 15 years ago, nobody helped me or supported me. It seemed my peers owned their clients, it was quite bizarre ...
Some 15 years later I am incredibly happy to see that things have changed much and I try to be part of that evolution as often as I can!

Since I joined Proz.com, I have taken a lot of outsourced work from colleagues.
I would like to point out that networking through this site is wornderful and I've always wished I had more work to share. My personal policy is to give the client the names of a few reliable colleagues for them to choose from.

Being recommended is a great honor and I have quite a few legal translation clients who have been referred to me by peers, and I have made it clear to all of these clients that they should not count on me for other projects. I feel this is the only ethical approach to be taken.
Sadly, however, hardly a few fellow translators have shown a similar attitude, and I have temporarily lost clients because they got lower rates from the people whose names I gave them at times when my work load made it impossible for me to take on any more. Ultimately, however, this has turned out to be great for me, as clients have come back and I have received them open-armed but with higher rates!! The best part is that all of them have accepted the raise
There also have been cases where people I have helped a lot have never reciprocated. I try to see the good side of this and imagine these colleagues do not get as many translation projects as I do, so they take everything themselves... Though I know for sure this is not always the case!
At any rate, I have a stable group of adorable colleagues who keep calling me to team up or referring clients to me, and we know we can trust one another. This is the way I like it to be!
