Bio:Peter Naszalyi is a mechanical engineer, a foreign trade economist and a language teacher in pension. During his career, Peter worked on many projects of exporting harbor cranes to developing countries and in parallel, he helped international standardization as an inter...preter from English into French and vv. With the Foreign Trade Ministry, he began to teach French business language, which he continued after passing two years in Algeria, as a commercial director of his company. After returning, because of the decline of state-owned foreign trade companies, Peter became an English teacher with several secondary schools and besides, in training facilities for adults, he worked for TÜV Academy in trainings of quality management specialists, and in language schools. Peter holds M. Sc. from agricultural and textile technology machines, and from foreign languages: interpretation and technical and commercial professional translation.
Is machine translation worth while or while not?
This question in not easy to be answered. Nowadays, we have to face the following problems:
1. The exponentially increasing number of documents to be translated for national and international institutions, conferences, committees which shall be completed quickly, perfectly and in timely manner.
2. Most languages have similar grammar rules like those of Latin German origin or are differing in they grammar which might enable or might not machine translation.
3. Most languages are rich in synonyms that is why they are beautiful and this beauty will be corrupted by requesting QA checks and chasing different words used to translate the same expression.
4. Modernization of languages is linked by giving meanings to old words, e.g. toll which was originally a sort of customs duty, now the fee for using motorways, or thread (in IT, in textile technology, in chatting, speaking etc.) or generation. This feature cannot be judged by translating machines.
5. There is a practical reason which makes machine translation imperative: the weakness of computers. When I work with Trados or another translation software, a copy of my work will be saved in the memory. And, when there is a blue death or a freezing of my machine, the simplest way to recover the work is to have the whole work retranslated by the machine translation of the program. For this reason, I think, machine translation shall not be avoided or excluded.
6. About machine translation: The programs are not conceived on grammar basis but on sampling basis. That means: a huge number of bilingual texts are fed into a program which composes pairs of expressions received and has these pairs saved. I believe in the theory which says: the more specialties you have, the more valuable and professional translato...r you are. As technology develops more and more professions get far-reaching, connected with each other, different fields combine and you need to be up-to-date with as many fields as you are comfortable with. Some people have the ability to do that, some don't.
First of all you need to read a lot, you have to have different interests and not just scratching the surface, but digging into the specific field, you need to have good logic and what is very important you need to be a good linguist. Not just understanding words, but using your logic, brain and linguistic skills, understanding the meaning of a sentence and then transplant the meaning accurately.
