Are there any Windows7 early birds here? It seems that Win7 is compatible with older programmes. I would like that DutchEnglish dictionary working again as well as Kluwer's car specifications. Both date from 1998. Under 2000,XP and Vista Ultimate, there is no way I can get these programs working.

Windows 7 is as compatible with legacy applications as Vista, since Win 7 is a better Vista, built up on the same platform.

If you buy the Professional or the Ultimate Edition of Win 7 and if your computer has a CPU that supports "virtualization technology (VT)" then you can run Win 7 in "XP Mode". That is the best you can do. If your app didn't run in Win XP, then it will not run in Win 7 XP Mode as well.

Have you tried "compatibility mode" in XP? Right-click the .exe file (after it has been installed) and choose Properties, Compatibility, Run as... Win 95 or Win 98. This trick has made miracles for me, I have been able to run very old apps, as long as they install (some will not even install under Win XP so the compatibility mode is no good). ▲ Collapse
