How is the market now? Very quiet on this end. Last time I posted a question like this, I never closed the year with such high earnings. However, it has been very dead lately. Can it be because it is summer hols? How has it been for you all? Tks!

Here (Spain) it's going fine. My Portuguese colleague has shut up shop for the summer to go on holiday, but she had to refuse some job offers recently owing to a full workload.

No change Jul 26, 2012

I don´t think market has changed despite the economic crisis in Europe. Changes are probably in the tendency to lower translations rates. And the awareness – at least for me - that one cannot charge the same rates when dealing with a client in Portugal or in Sweden, for example.

I have noticed that, on a regular basis, I mean every year, the most productive months have been May – July and December.

On the other side, some apparent insignificant details can make a difference. I have recently changed my website domain from “.com” to “.se” and this simple fact has improved the visibility and the number of jobs received in Swedish-Portuguese combination. One can think of a series of examples like this, exactly when one is not working day and night on a translation.

I would say that, unless one has regular clients, translations incomes are not guided by any predictable model.

So, be lucky again this year!

In my personal record, workload (e.g. JP, En>Th pair) rose quickly from last year. I did more translation and more accurate, quicker target documents. This becomes possible due to technology progress e.g. new software, CAT tools, billing system, marketing activities.
Now I accept only big volume jobs even more inquiries come.

The ways the translation market is looking for me Jul 30, 2012

is something I would really love to exchange opinions on so that I could more often turn up in the right places to give the 'market' an opportunity to better see me. But it looks TO me the topic is somewhat different...

Unusually quiet here Jul 30, 2012

Seems like everybody's watching Olympic games after Euro-2012. June was busy as usual, but July seems like dead season, and August is traditionally quiet. Good for us to have some rest, especially considering very hot weather.

Lot of work Jul 30, 2012

has been coming from Spanish agencies at the rate of euro 0.06 per word during last 3 months.
English-Russian and Spanish-Russian language pair.

Sometimes I have problems with deadlines.

Plenty of work Jul 31, 2012

Hello
No problem at the moment with work offers, in fact I have had to refuse work lately.
However, I don't work an 8-hour day, about 4-5 hours per day as I have other commitments.

Yes, it's good time to look for new customers, do some tests and sign new contracts for l'année prochaine:) Also to do some volunteer work for which it's very hard to find time in busy months.

One thing that has really come on strong for me is working as a team with my daughter and another very trustworthy colleague; we help each other by working in shifts and consequently, we've been able to take on larger jobs and finish them before the deadline, although I do all the final proofreading before sending our work into our clients.

Thriving Aug 1, 2012

I've had to refuse work lately (July) - but note that I'm part-time, 4 or 5 hours a day. My field is scientific and technical, French to English. For the last 2+ years I've not applied for any jobs, all have arrived unsolicited.
