致Lesley并诸位：翻译时常识的应用也非常重要。就拿这个问题来说吧。如果业务部门的经理都来做数据输入，那公司靠谁去发展？公司养着一班一般职员又是干什么的呢？因此，凭这点常识，我们可以判断，这里的“input”不是数据录入。再看语法。“input”作“数据录入”解时，应为不可数名词。但这里用了复数。而“input”作“投入”解时，可作可数或不可数名词，常跟介词“from”。因此，我们可以断定，这个“input”应为“投入”，而非“数据录入”。
有一点必须注意，词典的释义，只供翻译参考之用，万万不可照搬照套。查词典时，也要从上下文、常识等诸因素去判断词义。否则，英文单词动不动就对应十几个甚至几十个释义，我们怎么去判断呢？也就是说，离开了句子，离开了上下文的单词是死的，没用的。死背单词，无异于囫囵吞枣，也许对考试有点用，对学习英语毫无益处，更遑论翻译。当然，如果你能一目十行，过目不忘，那自然另当别论。
